Not quite what it sounds like. I've seen a number of people have made iPhone gaming grips/holders, and this inspired me to try making one for myself. It ocurred to me that an existing console control pad would be an ideal starting point. I happened to have an old, broken Xbox 360 pad lying around, so the project started. I then used a Dremel-like tool with a cutting disk to chop the controller into the basic shape, removing a big rectangle from the upper face, and taking away the internal moulding which would impede access for my phone. Next came lots of detail filing and sanding. I refined the shape, and removed the domed sections from around the buttons and control sticks. I also cut out the part where the cable used to attach to the back of the controller. Now things get messy. I had loads of car body repair stuff lying around from previous projects. I laid up new fibreglass sections to fill in the gaps in the shape. I had to fill the holes where the triggers had been, I filled in two semi circles on the front face where the right thumb stick, and the d-Pad had been removed, and a few other holes were filled. I cut the back out of an old DVD case, and used it to form the flat surface inside the controller. Next, "Plastic Padding" body filler was used to fill any small imperfections, and then a couple of hours of sanding was required to bring the surface quality up. A bit of automotive paint, clear coat, more sanding, and polishing, and the job was complete. I'm quite pleased with the result. It's a lot more comfortable to hold for longer gaming sessions. Hopefully somebody else will be inspired to try something similar. I'd love to see the results
So when're you constructing the console that'll relay signals via the iPhone port to make games compatible with the buttons and analog sticks? Surely that's your next project?
