With some of iOS's best titles (Modern Combat 3, Real Racing 2) getting Android ports and some of the biggest releases hitting both platforms at same time (Grand Theft Auto 3), anyone tried those on phones like Galaxy Skyrocket and Galaxy Notes? Currently my two favorite games on iPhone (Zenonia 4 and Kingdom Conquest) do not have English versions on Android, but I suppose it will be out soon. I am beginning to have screen envy. A 4.5" screen is almost 65% bigger (just like a 10" iPad is almost 100% bigger than a 7" Kindle Fire), that extra screen real estate really adds a lot to the experience. I think even iPhone 5 will not have anything bigger than 4" which may be a problem, why can't Apple provide a choice? Gaming is iOS's biggest edge over Android in apps quality, and apps quality is in my opinion, iOS's biggest edge over Android period. I really hope Apple can give us two screen choices, similar to iMac/Macbook . . .
all apple needs to do make the iphone 5 have a 4 inch screen now it got a big screen + better quality
I'm not sure I see this happening. Firstly, a bigger screen size means apps are going to be in development longer to make the art and stuff bigger and still compressed. Secondly it means that it'll have to sue a whole lot more power to work with retina. Third, it means that devs have to work with making it fit the screen size at all (same reason why not all games work on iPhone and iPad as easily), which cause a lot of chaos. Plus more work for apple... Plus, games do look better on iOS than Android all day...(when it's retina, at least)...
A larger screen does not mean a higher resolution, 960x640 on a 4" display would work fine and still have a higher DPI then the pre-iPhone 4 models. There would be absolutely no reason for developers to modify their apps in any way unless they change the aspect ratio and I doubt that'll happen. As far as games looking better on iOS then Android that's not the case when you're talking about tablets. iPhone games look like absolute crap on an iPad unless you jailbreak and install retinapad but even then they won't scale properly leaving a black ugly boarder around them. On Android apps scale to match whatever device their on. Going forward I've decided to keep using iPhone's for at least another two cycles (2013 model, 2015 model) and start using Android tablets instead of buying another iPad. At some point Apple is going to have to start producing two different sized devices across the iOS line the same way they do with their Mac products.
No one thinks that the screen size of the iPhone is an intentional design decision? When you use those pop tart sized 'roids, it's difficult to touch all areas of the screen with your thumb holding it one handed. Comparatively, just about everything on the iPhone (and iPod touch) can be done one handed.
I agree but gaming is the one case where you will always use two hands, and this is where the same game offers (IMO) a better experience on Android. Of course for now, you are still missing many great iOS games on Android, or you get it a lot later. Android piracy is a big turn off for developers. But eventually I fear the selection will even out and Apple will lose its edge. Big screen choice = #1 reason for mainstream users to pick Android, really hope Apple gets on top of this!
I'd be surprised if they did; as much as they love to beat Android over the head with the "fragmented" myth-and they'd no longer be able to say that. Aside from that, most Android apps scale naturally and very well on all sizes of screens, (Angry Birds for instance looks equally as awesome on my Kindle Fire, Glaxy Nexus and Transformer Prime all the same specific app I purchased from the market) not so much so with iOS apps. With a quad core tablet out, more on the way and quad core phones with increasingly better screen resolutions coming out, Apple is going to have to do something, but it's only going to be more work for devs. The main reason there aren't as many apps for Android tablets is most don't need to be redone, so it'll be interesting to see what Apple does. For all intents and purposes, I've stopped using my iPod Touch for anything but music, and do all my gaming now on my Nexus (which has a screen that looks every bit as good if not a little better than the 4S). ICS and its total overhaul of how it renders things is making the "retina" display yet one more thing Apple is lagging behind in.
Looks like the next batch of Android screens may be 3D as well although I'm no big fan of that idea. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2082191/New-Samsung-Galaxy-S-handset-outpace-iPhone-4S-hi-def-3D-screen.html I do find my iPod screen to be way to small by modern standards and compared to other devices the bezel is starting to look huge.
Samsungs really the only Android manufacturer I think makes decent hardware and the only one likely to make a big dent in the market maybe it's just me but it's the only brand I would buy anyway. Still the IOS devices have really fallen behind screen wise and 3D only makes the situation worse.
I think bigger cell phone screens is stupid, I don't know why people is demanding bigger screens for the next iphone. I am glad I got the iPhone 4s because my pockets won't be big enough for a 4" screen if that is the new iPhone screen size. If I wanted to watch videos on a big screen there is a television, an iPad, or computer for that. A phone is not a personal television. Does anyone else feel like phones are going backwards because in the early 2000's smaller was better, now it's bigger is better for a phone screen. Larger screen means more chance for your screen to crack, more room you have to make in your pocket, and one behemoth you have to hold up to your ear to talk on or hold to text. I am happy with my 3.5" screen because it is just right. Yes I realize a lot of this can be used in perverted way, do resist and I tried my best to make so your mind won't wonder off to making jokes about how I am happy with my 3.5" and how bigger is better now.
3.5" is pretty much an ideal size for a phone's screen, I think. It's big enough to play some games on, to browse comfortably (for a shorter time, of course), yet small enough to fit into the hands of people with smaller hands comfortably.
I think the size of the iPhone is pretty ideal as it fits nicely into my pocket, but yeah, some games are awful tiny on it (Pinball FX 2, for example). It doesn't bother me enough to want a behemoth phone, though I suppose one slightly larger might be a nice trade-off. 4" perhaps. I'd have to try it.
I'm conflicted about a bigger screen for a phone. I still make a lot of calls on my phone and don't need anything really bigger than that. However, I do play tons of games on it and wouldn't mind a bigger screen. The 7" tablets like the NOOK or Fire are a nice size, IMO, and wouldn't mind if the iPod Touch get slightly larger as a half-way point between the iPhone and iPad.
First off, you don't think HTC builds decent phones? I can understand passing over a Sharp or LG but HTC? I wouldn't necessarily say Apple has fallen behind in screen tech ether. 3D displays are a gimmick that will quickly wear itself out by the middle of the decade so I'd rather they not even bother with that. While other phones may have larger displays with higher DPIs the problem isn't so much that they're lagging behind as it is that they haven't split the iPhone into two different sized products yet. The 3.5" screen has plenty of advantages but a 4"+ screen has it's own advantages and would bring back some of the Android converts. You must wear nothing but skinny jeans considering a 7" Kindle Fire fits in my normal sized front pocket. I want a 4.5" phone and 7" tablet and all arguments aside I think there's enough other people out there that want the same thing that Apple is missing a huge opportunity by not expanding their product line in the near future to accommodate.
