I already mentioned Im on my way to GDC 2010 to cover the iPhone panel, and that iPhone gaming is getting big, so its interesting to see CNET reenforce just how big its getting: strikingly absent among those 18 [Mobile Gaming] panels are any that deal with game development specifically for the iPhone. And why? Because for the first time, the GDC advisory board decided that Apples smartphone is an important enough platform to warrant its own summit. And it filled quickly. Simon Jeffrey, vice president of social applications for leading iPhone game developer Ngmoco says: The iPhone is now recognized as a leading platform thats independent from the mobile. People are specifically naming the iPhone as a threat to their businesses. Nintendo said the iPhone is taking customers away from [its popular] DS handhelds. The cost of entry is lower than Microsoft or Nintendo, and its getting more and more popular while still maintaining its cool factor. While Android and Windows Phone 7 Series will bring the competition (and perhaps Palm as well), right now the iPhone is riding high on its head start. source:http://www.tipb.com/2010/03/08/iphone-longer-mobile-big-gaming-platform/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+TheIphoneBlog+%28TiPb%3A+iPhone%2C+iPad%2C+iPod%29&utm_content=Google+Reader
It's rumored that Nintendo came up with the DS XL in response to people embracing the idevice as a gaming platform. Nintendo tried to copy the iphone app store with the DSi but I think it failed miserably because it's so clunky and frustrating to browse through. I don't think the Android or Windows Mobile 7 series OS will be much of a threat to the idevice though because the handset specs are too fragmented and it's just more appealing to program for the iphone and Ipod touch at the same time.
Agreed. I've hardly played my DS since I got my iPhone. So many cheap, fun games on the device, it's too good to be true.
nice pic.. like I said before and was laughed at (and told to GTFO.. lol?), Apple has a red dot on these mobile businesses and they dont even see it... just read Microsoft's leaked e-mail correspondence on the iTunes Store, "they caught us with our pants down"
Haha, the games are so cheap on the App Store. And I will bet you money that in a few months, the iPhones graphics will be just as good, if not better, than the PSP's. They are already better than the Nintendo DS.
There are already games with graphics just as good, if not better than PSP games. Just take a look at deliverance for example.
Ftw!!! Yeah all my other consoles have been pretty much collecting dust other than the Blu-Ray/DvD usage from time to time. Hell I'm not home long enough to play them, and the DSi and PSP feel to big to carry around discretly so result= iPod Touch wins(and by a huge margin)!
It still makes me laugh on other forums like Kotaku when people try and claim that the iphone / touch is not a gaming device. I spend more time on my iphone and have played more unique games than on any other handheld device i have owned. The price point, accessability and openness to new devs is awesome. Another advantage is that the PSP and DS are stuck in there current hardware development cycle. They can only introduce new styles of model but not actually update the hardware without a totally new product line and a big big overhaul. The iphone / touch can be updated annually, games can be backward compatible. Essentially the iphone / touch will move with the times. I also hate the argument that the lack of buttons makes it a bad gaming device. Like with anything creative... new limitations force people to think away from the normal setups and come up with someting new. This lack of buttons is exactly why some of the most unique gaming experiences are available on the idevices than anywhere else. Assassins Creed II is a great example of this. Simplified controls used to great effect.
I'm still laughing at all the DS/PSP owners that don't consider iPhone a real gaming platform. It is, and it's only going to get bigger. The value for iPhone games vs. DS/PSP is amazing. The only thing I'd agree on is that the types and scope of games on DS/PSP is generally bigger; I think there is room for both markets. But to not even consider iPhone a major player at this point and going forward is shortsighted. I haven't touched my DS in months, but take my Touch everywhere.
It's been very interesting to watch. Barely a year ago iPhone was heating up as a serious gaming device, and now it's absolutely on fire. By the end of this year we'll see plenty of huge strides on the device I am sure. It is also interesting to see the competitors' reactions to this (Apple never seemed interested in supporting gaming historically, why should they expect this to take off?) If Sony or MS could release a dedicated device as well then it could fan the flames a bit - however you're never going to see such an overboard mad rush of affordable software for anything they develop at this point, at least not at the same scale. So long as Apple maintains their status quo, they should enjoy first place for a long time. However, if Sony or especially MS could properly hook their online networks up as deftly as iTunes and make it really well-thought-out and exceptionally friendly to their customer base, they might have something strong to compete. That's probably asking too much (especially in the case of PSN) but it's likely their greatest asset, aside from (the given) actual content connections, if you ask me.
And who do we have to thank for this awesomeness? Honestly? Gameloft. It may not be their games that sre the best, but it was their games that showed big developers the potential of the idevice (and plenty of awesome indies of course)
Well my iphone battery already lasts longer than my brand new PSPGO battery... so i already think its better than that. Also consider that the cheapest game i can get from the horrific PSN Store is 7.99 (no pound sign on my us keyboard)... and thats not even a great game. Even the PSN Minis store misses the entire point of the appstore... no pics... no customer reviews. Once again Apple has taken someting that other people were already doing... put some inteligent thought into it and produced a superior version that is more user friendly and as a result more popular.
No, the DSi isnt copying the iPhone... its copying the Wii and its Wiiware/Virtual Console setup. That being said though, I've been seeing a lot of Wiiware and DSiWare releases pop up on the iPhone, and vice versa. Not to mention the iPhone is also part phone, and iPod, which also gives it the edge. I admit I've kinda been neglecting my DS, but there are still SOME things you cant get on iPhone...like Dragon Quest for example.
I'm an ipod touch gamer, but im NO fanboy. If this news means more console-quality games on the platform then great. I'm all happy. If the games still stay lacking depth and nothing more than to past time then what the hell.
