Oh noes! They took my codes.

First of all, this whole “stupid lurkers” thing is tiresome. If you see some codes are you going to cross check the posted codes with all of the worthless “grabbed this one” and “grabbed this one” posts? No, you’re just going to try and grab a code before somebody else beats you to it. Announcing to the world that you got a promo code adds nothing to the conversation. It’s a wasted post.

And what I find amusing is to check the other posts from the people complaining about stupid lurkers. Often it’s the case, as it is with this guy, that they’ve only ever posted in threads about promo codes. Seriously, check it out. 12345j has posted 15 times, and every single one of them is a worthless post in a promo code thread. He has contributed nothing to this community. He’s worse than a lurker. He’s a guy who signed up for an account and is wasting all of our time.

Ok. Well, while I agree that "stupid lurkers" was extreme. I do agree that it would be nice if EVERYONE who took a code would post it. It just wastes a lot of people's time trying every code there is.

I've asked questions and contributed to many threads --- not just giveaways. And it's just common courtesy to let someone know that they used a code. It takes what 2 minutes to sign up for an account. And then they never have to do it again.

These "lurkers" are taking codes from people who legitimately care about this community. So yes, I don't like them either.

So let me understand your workflow. You see a bunch of codes posted in the thread. Instead of immediately trying them out, you scan through the thread and cross reference the “grabbed this code” posts against the original list? Do you just eyeball this, or are you creating a list and removing codes as you find that they’re redeemed. Seems like a waste of time to me. By the time you finish this tedious process, of course they’ll all be gone. That’s madness.

My guess is that you don’t really do this. You’re going to try them all, whether or not people are courteously writing these “got this code” posts. The only thing worthwhile here is when people post an “all gone” comment.

A smarter way to do it is to create a bookmarklet that converts the codes into clickable links. Then, it’s trivial to try them all. And no, I'm not sharing. That would give away my competitive advantage, then the stupid lurkers would get all my codes.

Here’s another hack. When you see a post with a bunch of promo codes. Post that they’re all gone. Then, you’ll have less competition when trying them all out. People will stop checking, and you’ll have a better chance. All’s fair.

It's called courtesy, Harold. Obviously you're not familiar with that word, so no amount of explaining will help.

Continue to lurk your codes. And...thanks for contributing to this community.
