Look at it this way, you come into my store and ask for the iPhone. If I say "Nope, that's AT&T, I don't know when we'll get it.", you won't come back most likely ever. Now if I say "Nope not yet! But sometime around December we should be getting it!", I've just guaranteed you will be back in my store again, affording me another opportunity to "sell" you... I'm speaking from very personal expierence. Now don't get me wrong, they may be getting it in December, maybe a press release will hit tomorrow, but working in the industry I have not heard of such... I hope they do get the iPhone, competition between carriers is in our best interest (the consumer). And quite frankly AT&t has rested on the iPhones laurels long enough.... But for now I'll believe it when I see it....
Umm, no not likely for this year. Factors that this is untrue: 1. Verizon = CDMA, iPhone hardware = GSM -Two totally different technologies. iPhone hardware is not setup to work with CDMA. Unless Apple fools everyone and comes out with new iPhone hardware this winter (they just released 3Gs) specifically for Verizon network (and thus breaking their exclusive contract with AT&T) it won't happen. 2. It seems Apple will be releasing some kind of tablet hybrid to battle netbooks which they will announce this September (all rumor of course), in addition to new iTouch hardware. Many suspect this tablet will utilize the Verizon network (which is why Apple has been looking into CDMA tech as of late) for data connections and this could be what that rep was referring to. 3. That person is a sales rep, iPhone is hot and they want you coming back and also they don't want you switching to another network. It probably was a loss prevention tactic as all companies have them in place to save customers. 4. AT&T will do anything in its power to keep iPhone exclusivity in the US market due to the major hit they will take if they lose it. People will jump ship almost immediately and will probably even pay the $175 or whatever it is termination fee to go with another carrier. Apple has the reigns now and I see AT&T caving into them when contract negotiations start. Now some of those points surely don't mean it won't ever happen but it isn't going to happen anytime soon. AT&T still has exclusive rights to the phone until sometime next year I think. My friends with Verizon keep telling me it is coming, it is coming and they are holding out for it... ...Please Also remember, Apple went to Verizon first and nothing got signed. EPIC FAIL on Verizon.
/Thread The iPhone is based on GSM technology, I sincerely doubt that Apple would have put together a CDMA based phone without us hearing about it - I'm pretty sure it would've been through FCC by now and that's open to public scrutiny and in fact many tech blogs scour it on a regular basis. If you remember waaaaaaaaaay back for the iPhone 2G launch, it was publically launched (not released) deliberately before putting the device through FCC testing as otherwise the world would know about it before Apple declared it's existence.
Dude Verizon Reps keep telling me that everytime I ask them but they make it vague like we'll have it next year and they told me that since the original iPhone. I won't believe this except it comes from the Cupertino people mouth.
*sigh* What is it with people and Verizon? The iPhone will only use Verizon when they turn GSM. Apple would have to change their hardware JUST for Verizon, seeing as the rest of the world uses GSM. The existing model can sell all over the world, the supposed CDMA one can only sell to Verizon customers, a tiny niche of the overall market. Slapshot, -or should I say unbelievablynaiveandgullibleteen- has been rickrolled.
exactly the same situation for me and a couple months ago my dad asked if that touch screen blackberry was coming to sprint and he said they'd have it in about a month and then the next day i saw the commercial that said it was a verizon or some other provider exclusive they are all liars
You are partly correct. 4G LTE is the data technology of the future, the cellular tech for voice calling would still remain the same when LTE is introduced. CDMA (which is contracting worldwide) for Verizon and GSM for AT&T. AT&T has plans to rollout LTE in 2011 while Verizon is starting end of year with about two cities and 30 cities by end of next year here in the US. Verizon runs its cell service right now on CDMA and its data on EV-DO where available. By 2012 it is expected LTE will be available worldwide as the main data stream for most carriers.
