Regardless of how violent the app is, I don't think Apple should play censorship gatekeeper. I think the only apps they should reject are ones that are illegal (and not just what Apple doesn't want people to have, like a bittorrent client or hacking tools like nmap and metasploit, but actually illegal, like child porn, and plagiarism/IP stuff that doesn't fall under fair use). It's also true that all the school shootings in the US in recent decades were done by kids on anti-depressant pharmaceuticals. Is it violent video games and movies or is it drugs? Or is it ice cream sales? The point is that it's subjective, and it shouldn't be Apple's decision. Sorta-off topic: Venezuela recently passed a law outlawing violent video games. For a long time now no one in China has been able to search for things about Tibet without going through international proxy servers because it's blocked by the chinese government. It's messed up, but that's what happens when people start to think censorship is ok. It's true that the iPhone is entirely owned by Apple and they can legally do what they want with it (for now at least since it hasn't been confronted in court yet), but the way they run the App Store is just not ok.
I am pretty liberal about violence and sex in media, and I agree with you about what you said about rock music and movies being previously blamed for violence, but I do think there is still a line When a game involves violence or shooting other people in line with reality, I think that is acceptable. For example, in Modern Warfare, you're trying to achieve objectives, and in course of that you need to shoot terrorists (generally before they shoot at you first,) I think the violence is realistic for that sort of occupation. And in GTA 4, there are people walking the streets; you can pull out a gun and shoot them, or run them over, but that's never been the objective of the game, and you get punished for that with the police coming after you. The game also tends to follows reality, because you could do these things in real life, but the game doesn't ask you to. However, I think it's quite different when the purpose of a game is to shoot innocent people, which doesn't seem to follow reality on any level other than a psychopath on a killing spree. I would compare it to if GTA 4 released and you were given no objectives other than to kill all those people on the streets, which I think would be immediately banned. If a game (or movie, or book, or anything) is violent in a totally unnecessary manner other than to be morbid, I believe it has the potential to affect someone's psyche, especially a child.
Ace Cowboy Camera Shootout - FREE I've just released a FREE version of the app under the name Ace Cowboy Camera Shootout. If you want to see what all the fuss is about but don't want to pay then just download it FREE from the App Store!
Yeah... any 12 year old definatly cant pretend to be 17 to get this game. You seriously dont see how this isnt violent?
i would have to agree that it is a bit exessive.. like a poster above said.. what about pointing the phone a children and shooting them... esp when the pics are so crisp and very realistic (they are real people after all; as opposed to cartoon ninja's or cartoon stickfigures or dragons).. that's just MHO tho... it's the same contraversy that some of the arcade games from the mid 90's like atari/midways 'killer instict' and 'mortal combat' brought up... i used to beta test for atari hardware division so we had to almost scrap that game....
