I guess it's time I added to this conversation (I should have done it sooner but I am just finishing up an iPad book). The contest was my idea because one of the real problems an app developer has is getting his or her app noticed. I thought this would be a great way to help to developers out (it would also be a good way to sell books, but at 20 cents an hour, writing books is not something you do for the money) As for the criteria, we probably should have made that clearer. In general, what I am looking for is an app that does one of two things (although I am willing to throw that away if I come across an app that really captures my imagination) First, it takes real advantage of the iPhone's strengths (and lives elegantly with its limitations) - that is, it does something I need to do when I am unchained from my desktop. I am not looking for a desktop app that been ported, or an app that really can run better on a desktop (with a larger screen). A definite plus is an app that uses location, heading, or the accelerometer. Second, an app that entertains me while I am waiting in line to cash my three dollar and fifty-two cent royalty check. A plus here is being able to pause it when I finally get up to the teller and then resume it after I carefully put all that money in my pocket. As for the legal stuff, it seems pretty clear to me that all that Wiley can do with your app is use it for publicity (which is really what everyone wants and needs). There is no intent to spam you or steal what is rightfully yours. Cheers Neal
Hi Neal & thanks for taking the time to chime in & clarify things. Hopefully now you'll get a few more devs entering your competition. Sounds as though you're making as much money out of writing books as most here out of developing apps. Keep at it though - your books are really useful (even to somone like me who knows very little about programming.
