well during the adaption time developer need to support the iphone 5 with their apps.. the black one would be the better choice sinde the case "hides" the black bars and the "issue" would be less noticeable
I'm still confused. Is it going to be easy to support widescreen for the apps? I'm not sure how hard it is compared to the change from regular to retina display. I'm guessing it's much harder though, since they're going to have to fit more content on the screen. Will this mean there will be 3 versions of apps? (One for previous gen, one for current gen, and one for iPads) I'm sure it's because the back of the phone has two different shades/hues of black/white respectively. The black one is less obvious, I think? This is what I'm talking about:
personally, i'll be skipping this generation as i'm still toting a 4S. But i'll be getting a 5 for my wife who is still using a 3GS. And since the 4 has the same cpu with the 3GS, i think upgrading from a 4 to a 5 would definitely be nice
pre-order hopefully ready to pick up tommorrow here but had fleeting 2nd thoughts. some of the problems are squarely at apple's door and others are outwith their control. for europeans (who gives a shit about us anyway, i barely do anymore and im stuck here!) there is very little to get enthusiastic over. 1.nearly zero support for 4G, the frequency used in iphone 5 is not going to be compatable with almost every network over here, thus a useless non-feature. this is not apple's fault incidently, ofcom here is to blame for that cock up. 2. siri, a waste of space for anyone in europe really. amazed this hasnt been rectified. ho hum. 3. ios6? not getting a massive amount of positive press today. there will always be haters but it sounds bad! currently on an iphone 4 so the processor upgrade will be nice, if developers support it fully, but thats really it! screen size and weight reduction have not been something i was desprate for. love the appstore and the variety of software available. ios5 at least just seems to work nicely. however i fear this is the begining of the end for apple as the competition closes the gap on smartphone tech significantly. windows 8 (not tried the mobile ver tho) is horrible, nokia are gambling with that one but i see linux taking off big within the next 2 years.
Quite impressed by the iPhone 5 drop tests it seems a whole lot tougher now although I'm not to impressed with the comparison one that dropped S3's from a different height. But even without the S3 comparison iPhone does look much more sturdy.
Loving the iPhone 5. Got mine this morning thanks to UPS I missed the 4s because I wasn't eligible for the upgrade, so going from a 4 to a 5 is a huge leap in terms of speed. I honestly can't believe how fast this is, and don't get me started on LTE, its literally as fast as my wifi...
Question I've been really wanting someone to answer - how do games play on the device? Are they faster/smoother? Also, does the letter boxing impact or hurt any games that don't support the larger screen size?
Front page toucharcade has a comparison of asphalt loading on a 5 vs 4s. Regarding letterboxing I'd imagine you just need to pretend the black border is part of the phones bezel. Regarding an earlier post asking about developer timeframe for i5 screen support, depends on the game. Full 3d games will probably have it easier since their just repositioning the interface while letting players see more of the game on screen. Thats just my guess however heh.
Just wondering what's everyones opinion on Scuffgate? It's not a very promising sign in my opinion basicly it looks like there were serious corners cut in the manufacturing (ie Apple took the cheap option with anodising), I thought the phone was looking like a good step up over the 4S until I started to read about this. Read a few storys about the new phone being scratched even in socks and velvet bags which really shouldn't be able to scratch anything, not to mention it seems the black ones are mostly coming out of the box already flawed. When the iPhones mostly targeted at people who mostly want to show it off this is about the worst thing Apple could have done in my opinion, can't wait to see how they try to spin it. Also read over on Macrumours somewhere the same process is probably used on the colours of the new Touch so it might be just as scratchprone.
The scratching thing is all crap. All the scratches wipe off on the back with your finger Here, here's a good video showing it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2BxL0nRDlY&list=UUhYU73igK5wQhWAXPh3X8PA&index=2&feature=plcp
I don't buy that at all there are way to many reports for it not to be true even a poll on a very pro Apple site showed around 40% of people are having this issue either out of the box or very shortly afterwards and these are the same people who would usually try to justify anything Apple does to everyone else. On top of that there are also some notable tech journalists who also received scuffed units out of the box to review so it isn't just random people claiming it, it's definitely a real problem. I think apple need to acknowledge the problem and get the manufacturers changing the process pronto.
Oh, I know I completely agree with the scuffing thing, quite frankly when my iphone comes on thursday I'll be pissed if it's scuffed. I was just showing that people were over-reacting about how badly the back anoidized aluminium holds up
It must be better than the glass back of the iphone 4/s. I hate the glass back, it is slippery, cold, easy to crack, and hard to hold. I would much rather have a back that was metal and prone to scratching, but that is my humble opinion, and I don't have a iphone 5 yet. But I hate the glass backing, all the android phones feel better to me, but I do admit the iphone 4 glass back does look the nicest though.
It should really hold up pretty well if it's done right, whether there's a few bad batches or something I don't know but I'd be furious myself if I spent so much on a new device and it was blemished. It may well be blown up out of proportion it's hard to tell with these things but hopefully Apple do the right thing and completely replace any that are effected.
It actually don't notice the letter boxing on some games, it takes me a second to realize it. Once you spot X or Y game being letter boxed, you kinda notice it every time after that though. I'm not disturbed by it, and on games that play in portrait mode with virtual controls, like iMame, the extra space from the bottom gives your thumbs a little more breathing room which is nice. Overall, I'd prefer games in full 4 inch that play in landscape though, its tempting to have that extra room and know you'd recover more of the screen's live area for viewing if your thumbs were spread out more. In terms of performance, its incredibly fast. If a game slows down, which I have yet to see, its probably because of bad coding, theres no way this A6 can be slowed down by current gen games, its going to take a while until we see games really pushing it to the max. -- Also, no scuffs... I use this just as I did my iphone 4, without a case and just tossing it into my front pocket. I wear jeans, and they typically have those metal rivets near the pockets. Even when scraping them, I've still not gotten any marks on my i5. Not sure what the deal is why people have problems, but aluminum is not a hard metal, so I expect some wear to start manifesting at some point.
Had a play with a mates i5 last night. As an iPhone 4 user I expected to be underwhelmed, and I was. But I also think it's probably the best Smartphone on the market right now. Love the weight difference and metal finish. Panorama mode for the camera works really well. For a functional device, I don't see the i5 being beaten anytime soon. I wont be getting one because; The screen needed to be more 'S3 size' IOS is boring (to me). iPhone 3GS / iPhone 4 over 3 years... the brilliant OS has gotten stale. Google Maps.. I used that A LOT on my iPhone. I'm not convinced Apple will catch up anytime soon. I want accurate data & streetview, with the bonus of voice guided nav on Android. It helps having an iPad, that way I don't have to lose the appstore!
Just got my new iphone in! no blemishes or scratches out of the box so I'm relieved! Though I'm probably going to wait a few days before i activate it or just buy a crap case to throw it in
I'm going from a 3GS to the iPhone 5. Probably getting it when it's released over here on the 28th. The 3GS is so slow now I'm actually getting little fits and headaches using it for anything other then making phone calls lol. And the battery is starting to show its age. Android isn't an alternative since I use touchscreen devices for music production, and android can't really handle anything audio or midi related nearly as good as iOS (not to mention Android doesn't have any dev support whatsoever).
I'm sure those looking to upgrade will be pleased you've given the go ahead! And no, the iPhone 5 would have been exactly as it is with Jobs still alive.
Looks like theres another big contender on the scene the HTC One X plus, 1.7ghz quad core 64gb storage otherwise seems pretty similar to the original, I'd say this will probably prompt Samsung to follow suit as well. Not one I'd personally consider pretty much for the same reason as the iPhone basicly I want a replaceable battery and Micro SD in any phones I buy.
