I've said this in the past and I'll say it again (and likely will say it more in the future): as an RPG fan, those on the PSP (and DS, for that matter) far exceed those on the iDevice.
As an RPG fan, I can tell you that the variety and richness of those on the DS far exceed those of the PSP.
This debate kind of happened on the JRPG thread already, but in short, personally, I find the ones on the PSP appeal more to me than the vast quantity of those on the DS.
That's fair enough. My point was not that the iPhone (or the DS) is the ultimate gaming system, or that the PSP sucks. I'm only saying that there's no such thing as an "ultimate" system, and that people who take gaming seriously have reasons to take a look at all of them.
It would take pages to explain my reasons on why it's better than a PSP, but here it is short and simple. 1. It feels way better in your hands. I know this due to the fact that one of my friends who is an expert craftsman, made me a metal model of the iPhone 4 using the exact dimensions. Don't ask why, we were just bored. 2. Retina Display will be amazing...period. 3. Hundreds of thousands of games, some console quality, some not. But who cares, it's games! 4. Way more powerful. 5. In my opinion, developers such as 2XL Games will take advantage of this powerful device. The end. Go iPhone 4!!!!!!!!!
iPhone 4 looks very much like a 1st gen PSP other than the obviouse but they both have stainless bands and black (obviousley not the white model) front and backs. Their profiles are incredibly thin, some other things as well.
Are there any good RTS's for ANY mobile device? Cuz otherwise, LASW ranks as the best mobile RTS I have ever played....there's nothing to speak of on the PSP, but not sure about the DS Overall, the PSP has physical controls, a bigger screen, better games. It is built for gaming, so it will clearly give you a better gaming experience than the iPhone. As an overall device though, the iPhone wins, because along with a decent gaming console, it has internet, phone capabilities, a GPS, a touch screen, music, and a whole bunch of other stuff
I think you'll be surprised when we compare a screenshot of an game running on an older device to the same game (optimised for iPhone 4) running on an iPhone 4. While the Retina display won't be responsible for the improved textures, lighting, shadows etc, it will sharpen objects by quite a bit. There are already lots of games with noticeable jagged edges, and with the extra pixels, in-game objects could look very nice with smooth edges. Although, obviously it's main benefit is clearer text and general UI.
I was thinking more along the lines of... we haven't had confirmation on whether or not games are going to be made at the iPhone 4's resolution or if it'll just be upscaled from the regular res. If they're all upscaled it won't help too much, but if they're done specifically for the iPhone 4 then yeah, they'll look nicer.
Tough call, but I have Patapon, loco roco, syphon filter, spyro, rachet & clank, daxter, wipeout, monster hunter, etc on my PSP. The iPhone have a ton of potential, but until more love and money gets put into making the games, I'll be playing my PSP on the airplane. Here's the easiest way to say how I feel. I have finished every game that I have bought on my psp (except a Harry potter one with a glitch). I've finished and loved them all. I love all of the games on my iPod, but yet, I have at least 40 games I have not completed. Sure, they're cheaper, but I'm satisfied with 4 psp games a year, where I buy 60 or 70 iPod games a year. They're both amazing devices, but psp's game development trumps the iPhones in most cases.
I much prefer to use my i|Phone for handheld gaming. That being said, as the PSP has buttons, it'll be considered the most obvious choice of the two.
I use my iPod Touch more. It is harder to carry around a PSP with 2-3 UMDs compared to carrying an iPod with 40+ games in your pocket. Most of the PSP games that I have aren't really that good anyways...
