i got a new iphone 4 about a week ago (my first smartphone). it seems like almost every night i've gone to bed with my phone at between 30% and 40% battery, and when i wake up the battery seems to be completely dead. however, one or two mornings i've gone to bed with the battery at about 45% and the phone has been just fine the next morning. tonight i'm going to leave it relatively fully charged and see if that makes any difference. i've poked around a little bit and it seems like some people have a problem of the phone turning off at night (or at random) and requiring a hard reset to restart, but it doesn't look like a lot of them say the battery is totally dead upon restarting their phones. they all more or less said they needed a replacement to solve the problem. i'll keep looking around, just wondering if anyone here would have any input/advice. thanks in advance.
I had a similar issue awhile back and fixed the issue by turning off the 3g. I'm not exactly sure why this helped because I don't have 3g coverage where I live, but after I turned it off the battery stopped draining overnight. Hope that helps!
i'll give that a try, although the fact that on one or two nights the battery didn't seem to drain at all defies all logic to me. also, my girlfriend's phone sits literally right next to mine and doesn't seem to have a problem. plus i'm fairly certain that the phone is always on wifi in my apartment. but i'll check that out regardless. thanks for the suggestion
If you don't have 3G coverage where you live, then the iPhone wastes a ton of battery continually searching for one.
Sounds weird. What I do is I charge my iPhone during the night. Use it during the day, wear it down to at least 20%, and the recharge it fully when your sleeping-it's good for your phone (it gets through a full charge cycle) and it'll prevent you from having any battery issues during the day
i don't know. i have been playing a lot of gun bros. right before bed, and that certainly kills the battery. maybe it continues running to some extent even after i exit out of it? still, if that were the issue i would expect something similar to occur during the day as well. edit: i just checked the multitasking tray and it seriously looks like basically every app i've ever used is running in the background... do i need to hold down the home button when exiting an app to actually close it? sorry if this is a stupid question. i'm new to this.
Like the other users said, having multiple apps in the background will certainly run the battery down quicker...
I have a 4th gen iPod touch and have this issue as well. Sometimes I won't use it for a day or two and the battery won't seem to lose any power at all. Other times I can go to bed with a fully charged battery and it will be completely drained by the next morning. Always assumed it was because of apps trying to update in the background and constantly using wifi. My 2nd gen iPod touch did this as well so I just assumed all devices did this, there is probably nothing wrong with your phone.
To stop them from running in the background open the multitasking tray and hold your finger on one, then a bunch of red minuses should appear on each one. just tap the minuses and it will stop them from running in the background. That should save your battery a bit depending on what apps you use. Think of leaving a app with the home button just minimizing the window on a PC and doing the steps above completely closes the window.
so last night i went to bed with the phone at 92% charge and nothing of consequence running in the background, other than my alarm clock app. seven hours later it was at 38% charge.
The only other things I can think of would be if your wifi is on and your not connected to a network consequently searching for a network all night and not connecting could drain it faster, bluetooth will also add to that drain, aside from that it seems you may just have a faulty battery, maybe try and do a factory restore, and as a last case scenario bring it to apple. They're pretty good in replacing or fixing a device even for battery issues within the first year...
Are you doing a hard power-off/power-on? iOS4 has a crappy bug where apps that crash will leave memory in the background...effectively draining your battery life even if you don't have anything going. It caused my 2nd gen iPod to lose battery life in an hour or less. Make sure all of your multitasking apps are closed, then just hold down the sleep button until you get the red power slider...it fixed all of my battery problems. You'll have to do it every time an app crashes though. An alternative to that is to Jailbreak and clear memory with Sbsettings.
After clearing my multitask bar, I use Recession Apps' System Activity Monitor. When I go to bed, I put it on airplane mode with wifi on. Nine hours later I lost around 5-9% battery life.
Your iPod/iPhone is always using battery, unless it is completely off. Even in sleep mode, it is using battery, and if 3G/ W
