It's BS because I've been able to have homescreen backgrounds when my iPod touch 1st gen was jailbroken. The multitasking might not work, but why not exclude that like they are doing with the 2nd gen models? And the only major difference between first and 3rd gen iPod touches is speed and speakers. Not really that big of a deal. They're pretty much the same thing and do the same things.

So what about the original iPhone? Will it be able to do everything except for multitasking?

I'll probably get an iPhone 4G this summer anyway.

  5. And executable RAM. That's the primary issue when you're doing stuff like skinning and backgrounds: It takes up RAM, and with the meager amount of available RAM the 1st gen Touch has it can cause instability issues, likely in the form of more frequent crashes.

Apple has certain performance thresholds they require to provide what they feel is a good user experience. Sure, you can use your hacked up Jailbreak mess, or you can use something that was actually designed to intelligently multitask with performance and battery in mind. It's beyond me how anyone with a first generation iPod touch can be surprised that their hardware isn't going to be supported in the future. Like it or not, iPods, iPhones, and even computers to some extent are now disposable electronics with planned obsolescence.

They completely excluded their whole PowerPC product lineup with their latest release of OSX, when they conceivably could have easily just continued providing two different kernels for each processor architecture. What makes Apple products great is they design looking to the future, not making sure they support every piece of junk made in the last 30 years like Windows.

The multitasking thing is dumb to me because that is a standard feature that has been found on every other major smartphone OS for years now. I can buy that a 1st gen iPhone might have some issues, but you can't tell me that a 3G iPhone doesn't have the horsepower to run multitasking when Blackberries have been doing it for 4+ years.

I'm all about tech companies continually upgrading their hardware and pushing the envelope. I just hate how Apple always handicaps functionality in interest of the "user experience". If app support ever dips for this platform, I'm out. This whole press conference essentially pimped out features for OS 4.0, pretty much all of which have been on Android phones for a while now. It's pathetic.

No, I've just been around long enough to know how Apple works instead of having a tantrum over a device I bought in 2007 not being included anymore in the latest and greatest of functionality.

Err, wait, sorry, argh damn you greedy $teve Job$ just trying to juice me for a new iPod so I can use custom wallpapers!!!!!!!!

I'm more excited about folders than multitasking anyway.

There is a difference between how technology is always improving, which of course makes upgrades necessary every few years and the asinine limitations Apple puts on their hardware and software.

They do it so you say to yourself "Hmm, look at the new features of this iPod I should get a new one." instead of "Man, this thing is slow as hell now with this new multitasking stuff, this sucks." This is just how Apple operates, and how they likely always will operate. They are a hardware company, interested in selling hardware... Not endlessly keeping it limping along with incremental bloatware.

If that's what you're looking for, go pick up a Droid. ;)

When I had my Touch jailbroken way back in the 1.x stages, the performance was fine. No crashes, battery loss, or unstability. I was still able to safely add wallpapers to my iPod Touch. And it's not like its a 10 year old device. It's only a little over 2 years old.

I'm fine with no multitasking as I understand it wouldn't work fine on older devices, but taking us out of the entire update? Some people don't like wasting money on upgrading a device that does almost the same thing every year. I don't want to waste $300 dollars every year. The only difference between my 1st gen iPod Touch and the 3rd gen iPod Touch is the extra speed and speakers; not a major difference. It gives me no reason to upgrade.

However, OS 4.0 gives me a reason to upgrade. I'm fine without multitasking. If they allowed us 1st gen users to upgrade and excluded us from features such as multitasking, I wouldn't really upgrade my device. Now, I want to upgrade my device because of all these new features. However, I won't be able to because my Dad won't spend $300 on something I already have.

The 4th gen iPhone will likely have better hardware and video capabilities (posisbly HD?) in addition to other unknown upgrades. THAT is incentive to upgrade, not OS features that have been standard on every other smartphone platform for a while now. Don't you see the difference?

If a device I have doesn't do something I want it to do I buy a new one.

    *rolls eyes*

I guess you aren't getting my point or refuse to remove your Apple fanboy glasses. There is no reason why a feature that is STANDARD on all the other major platforms should be used in April 2010 as a reason to upgrade to the latest and greatest model. Only Apple can get away with this crap because of the legions of idiots who take anything Steve Jobs says as law.

The iPhone doesn't play Ogg Vorbis either.
