    So... what does this mean?

A full discount on a standard handset or iPhone upgrade is not available at this time but you may qualify on 02/16/2011. We can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price with a 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. Please visit a participating iPhone sales location for pricing on this offer.

It means you have to pay either $400 for the 16 gig or $500 for the 32 gig. I got the same response.

I got the same message - I'm still going to pre-order the 32gig though

I hope I can also. This almost seems too good to pass up.

    Australia, mate!
Wow, I'm confused. Anyway, anyone know if I'm able to upgrade my iPhone 3G to a 4G? If yes, how much do I have to pay?

Got the text saying I can upgrade to a new 2 year plus the $18 upgrade fee. :) Gonna pre-order the new 32gb iPhone ASAP. I'll give my wife my 3GS, she is using a 1st gen iPhone right now...

Shouldn't you give her the 4G?

I was surprised to find that it says I am eligible to upgrade even though my contract ends next july! So, I'm happy. Unless, of course, that it said that was a glitch. I'll check again once pre-orders start.

Does anyone know if you can put an AT&T pre-paid SIM into an iPhone? If I upgrade to the 4, maybe my wife could use the 3GS with her pre-paid SIM? I'm a newb on this SIM stuff still. But it is still AT&T. Would it work? Also, what about data? Would that work and how would it be charged? Even if it doesn't, that would still be a ton better then her current phone.

What confuses me is that my contract should be up next June, and I cannot get the full discount, while others have contracts expiring later and can get the full contract.

I got the iPhone 3G sometime in June 10-20 then when the 3GS came out, I used the $30 upgrade to get the new phone sometime in early July. Did the new contract somehow null my ability to get the new deal?
I am just confused since other 3GS owners are able to get a full discount while I can't.
Also, we got another iPhone on the same day as I got my 3G which is eligible for a full upgrade.

Could someone possible explain to me what is wrong?

The reason why you cannot is because of the $30 upgrade in July. You have to have started a new contract within 18 months to be eligible for the upgrade. The last day to be eligible would be June 30th 2009 as 18 months later would be 12/30/10. I got mine on 6/23/09 and I just called and they say i'm eligible.

Also - I spoke w/ 3 separate AT&T reps and the assured me that you can DEFINITELY keep the ULIMITED DATA PLAN if you upgrade! You would have to specifically ask for the new data plan if you do not want to keep the unlimited data plan. That goes for this upgrade and any in the foreseeable future as well

I don't think so unless maybe if you've fulfilled the full two years contract which in your case obviously you have not. Do this

Get your wife a line for $9.99.
Get your 4 with this new line.
Ask them to switch your 3GS line to the 4 and vice versa.

The last step isn't advertised but AT&T reps did it for me when I bought the 3GS from my 3G.

Wait. They give you $30 upgrade discounts on top of the $199 upgrade price for existing AT&T customers?

No, I returned my 3G in favor of a 3GS, and that cost me a restocking fee of $30 or so. No extra discounts, just be happy with your $200 discount.

No, i believe he purchased an iphone 3g at the end of june and then upgraded to a 3gs in July for $30 upgrade fee + the discounted rate for the 3gs. AT&T's system must not be counting his initial contract start date in June w/ the 3g. Their using his 3gs upgrade in July which makes is next eligible upgrade date in January 2011

Thinking back, I think it was simply a 30-day return policy, so the new contract makes sense. Too bad I missed it by 10 days...

I have a two year contract on my 3gs. I got it on June 19 of last year. I guess I don't get a discount to upgrade to iPhone 4?
