my Dad recently got a new iphone, and offered to trade me his 3g for my iPod Touch 1st Gen, but I'm skeptical about the 3g's performance. Do games play slower on it than they do on the ipod touch 1st gen, or do they play better? I would really love it if someone who owns both could give a comparison.

    thanks!

From what I understand 1st gen iTouch's are the worst of the bunch, with iTouch second gen being the best. I have a first gen iPhone and have never had any problems running games on it -

    Yep, above is right.
The devices are listed as follows, performance wise (top is best).
    1. iPod Touch 2nd Gen
    2. Original iPhone and iPhone 3G
    3. iPod Touch 1st Gen.

Don't tell your Dad, he probably doesn't know that you are getting the better side of the deal. :D

ok, sounds like it's a good deal then, because I've never even experienced any slowdown on my 1st gen ipod touch.

lol, the reason he wants my ipod touch is because he is a developer and needs a bunch of different devices to test on.

Then he's actually a smart developer, IMHO.

As the 1st "gen" touch is the slowest of the bunch, it is the lowest common denominator, so if he optimizes for the 1st "gen" touch he's pretty much assured of his apps running optimally across the entire platform's device line.

The only real thing he'd need to test with the 3G is the 3G download speed and a few iPhone specific things, and he can do that just by making your "new" iPhone 3G one of his beta test devices. But, again, if he's developing and he wants to get everything running smoothly across all models of the platform line, having the 1st "gen" touch be his "standard" test device is the best move.
