I wonder if if the iPad will have mass market appeal a year or 2 from now?

lack of flash is the biggest deal breaker for me.
I think it's pretty sweet otherwise.

How heavy is it? Would I be able to hold it with one hand easily?

That's assuming the market is there for such things.

I still think the iPad will skew toward an older consumer market that won't buy so many games (out of the "core" gamer age bracket that iPhone and particularly iPod touch both hit). If the consumer base doesn't buy many games, then devs will ease up on support. Doesn't matter how powerful a device is, or how great it would be for games if not many are buying said games.

I think that'll be the case with iPad. It will be used more for e-books, movies/shows, and productivity (iLife) than it will be for stuff like games and entertainment apps which are the best selling app categories on the iPhone/touch platform.

And this is one of the reasons why I think it'll sell to a smaller audience than iPhone/touch. It isn't as portable/mobile, and really doesn't do much more quite frankly. The biggest key difference is, indeed, screen size, at least for the majority of mass market consumers. Will that make things quite different in terms of user experience? Sure. But some differences will be negative as others might be more positive.

People like to point out the idea of tower defense games and such, or RTS on iPad having the possibility of being better than on iPhone/touch due to the screen size, but fail to recognize that stuff like multidirectional shooters using dual wheels/sticks and accelerometer controlled racers might suffer due to that very size. That's why so many folks bring up using it in their living rooms while sitting down on the couch, which confuses the hell out of me as to why they seem so against the idea of a new AppleTV with an App Store if it'd be used similarly but with a greater far wider reaching potential consumer base.

In my mind, I have a proportional relation between size and capability. The bigger it is, the more it better do. So in that respect, I agree with you, but will you please shut-up about the AppleTV. I get the point, you think it's a fantastic and underrated idea. Write a freakin' blog about it, write a book, dedicate your life to getting Jobs to accept this glorious idea of bountiful convenience, just shut up about already... please... *sniffle*

Agreed. Apple TV was--and will continue to be--a failure.
The fact that the poster continues to talk about how great it is, while espousing such negativity about the iPad, speaks volumes...

    1. I'm American. I can well discuss any goddamn thing I wish just about wherever I wish. *slaps you with Bill of Rights and waves Old Glory

    2. There's an ignore button. Use it. 'ol spiffy won't be insulted.

    3. There is no negativity about the iPad as a product in any of my posts. I see that, sadly, reading is such a lost art. Again, clearly: IT WILL BE A SUCCESSFUL PRODUCT...BUT MORE NICHE THAN IPHONE/TOUCH.

    4. aTV isn't great...yet. It could be though. And if Steve Jobs did the stuff I and others suggest, many of you naysayers would be sucking on his knob going on about his "genius".

I think I'll just go to the Apple store and play around with one..seems like a fun toy, nothing that'll be useful to me. I might get bored of it after a while..

For my two cents, it's not at all impossible for the iPad to reach Wii-level sales volumes. People are judging it based on the current pricing, but there's no reason to expect the iPad to follow a different pricing curve from other mobile iProducts. It's quite possible that a year or two from now the prices are going to be $100-200 cheaper, or at least the current model will be sold at a reduced price-point to make room for whatever the next revision is.

At a price-point of, say, $300, the iPad certainly has a more widespread appeal (internet & media device vs. game console), a larger and cheaper game library and fits into more living rooms than the Wii. At that price I daresay that it'll outsell clunky plastic netbooks on its looks alone, side-by-side there is no comparison.

The first year pricing is for early adopters and enthusiasts, and for ramping up production.

iPhone has already proven that its technology and feature set is appealing for mass markets. Expecting the iPad to remain a small niche product is underestimating Apple's ability to take the necessary steps to deliver a device for the masses - and underestimating how appealing the iPad itself is two years from now when all the killer apps for a touch screen of that size are available on the App Store.
