Regardless of how much noise a remarkably vocal and even more confused/entitled microscopic subsection of Apple's customer pool makes all of these devices are going to sell like crazy this holiday season. :)

I dunno. Next to nobody was talking about it outside of the tech blogs yesterday. Hardly anyone talks about or cares about the Mac reveals, and that's exactly how the iPad reveal was. There was a lot more talk about the Microsoft Surface RT.

Would you like to place a wager on whether or not iOS devices sell like crazy this holiday season? That seems like a horrid bet to take.

I'm not saying it won't sell. Of course it will. I'm buying one, a bunch of TAers are and I'm sure a ton of others too.

My problem is that they refreshed it too soon for my taste. Yes tech moves on but really? 6 months and my $600+ device isn't the newest, shiniest toy in its product line? I understand some of the reasoning behind the lighting connector update and the chipset upgrade but couldn't that have waited until march AND we could've seen a better 4th gen iPad with more than just a different chip, HD FaceTime and new connector?

Oh, I'm not saying iOS devices won't sell. People were talking about the iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5 a lot. I just don't think the iPad mini will do that great, because nobody really seemed to care. I do think that the iPad 4 launching so soon will drive iPad sales, but not for the iPad 4. People will probably go for the older, discounted iPad models. It's just that nobody seemed to care about the new iPads being revealed. Hardly anyone talked about it.

Welcome to technology. There's always going to be a newer, better, faster __________. The good part is, your iPad 3 is as great today as it was yesterday, and will be the following day. :)

So this is getting 3D Maps and SIRI but iPad 2 did'nt get any of those things on iOS 6? What did I miss? The hardware is there right. Another case of Apple pushing people to buying the latest stuff by omitting things for "older" hardware maybe?

I would've liked the Pad mini to have 16:9 aspect ratio like the iPhone 5. It would make it even better for gaming IMO.

    Look out your window.
Meh. That would be a really long, tall device.

But it would have a aspect ratio that didn't die out a decade ago.

I know but a very impractical device. Sure as hell wouldn't work with one hand.

Well, the aspect ratio is still in use today so it didn't die out a decade ago.
Think books, magazines, reading anything full stop.
Think another medium other than tv and film and you might have a concept of why that resolution is still in use today.
Not everybody watches tv or movies on an iPad or iPhone, some have wide screen tv's for that.
Some do read quite a lot on iPads though.
I don't really think books and magazines need to go 16:9 as well in order not to be considered an "outdated" ratio.
So I don't think an iPad needs to either.

  15. If that is the case, I will call the ipad 4 the ipad, and call the ipad 3, the new ipad.

Can't get myself to call it the discontinued ipad... :(

I'm just gonna call 'em iPad 3's and iPad 4's lol

  17. I don't much like 16:9 too tall for me and since I don't watch a lot of movies on it, it makes me like it less.

And regardless of how fervent the truly faithful are, Apple's moves with the new iPad plus releasing a crippled (imo) mini-iPad got me to look seriously at the competition. To my surprise, I did not find it lacking. I'm not the only one in my circle with that experience, so Apple did not do itself any favors by waking up their customers in this manner. It's not good to let folks' eyes wander off the ball. It's certainly not a good marketing move unless your competition is crap, and in the case of the iPad-mini, it's not.

There are several high school and college students in my neighborhood that were set to get iPad-minis, that will now be getting Nexus 7's due to the large price difference and lack of retina display. Nexus 7 wasn't even on their radar prior to Apple's event.

I think Conan nailed it last night...

I wouldn't want it for watching movies (I only watch movies on my TV and at cinemas), but a 16:9 aspect ratio would be good for me as I take a lot of landscape photographs in 16:9. I would also prefer it for gaming, web browsing, reading etc.
