Actually I can test them myself. The ipad air was just delivered, just this minute opened the box and wow how light and thin it is. The box had a dinged in corner so I guess the Royal Mail were as careful as ever All I need to do now is head over to the insurance2go site and set up an insurance policy for it, to cover accidental damage and then I'm good to start testing stuff. One question: before I give my ipad2 to a family member I want to actually see the difference between retina and non retina, what one game would you recommend that has a marked improvement in retina? Edit: my god how small and faint is the flipping serial number!!! Even with my glasses and a magnifying glass I can barely make out the letters.
Not sure anymore, actually; my last non-Retina device was a 2nd-gen iPod Touch. ^_^ Try having a look at Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne and Ascension (if you have the last two), and maybe also check out a book in iBooks. You should notice quite a difference in all of those.
Will do, thanks. Edit: I tried TtR first, yeah the graphics are nicer mainly because the board has more detail, I wouldn't go as far as saying it was 10x better, maybe 30-40% better but still an improvement.
It's funny because Anandtech's review was really glowing. People are really focusing on the elements that were more informational than complaints. If Anand thought 1 GB of ram was a major issue he would have stated it. I've followed Anand since the Pentium 2 days. He's one of the most respected reviewers in the industry and he's not going to pull any punches.
Seeing all the useful info in this thread, thought If contribute too...my iPad air will be delivered in approximately 4 hours.
Just realised a (small) problem, since the air uses a different connector than my ipad2, I won't be able to charge the iPad via my computer and a USB port. Quite a shame as I normally leave the charger plug in my living room and then I can charge the iPad when I'm in either room via plug or PC USB. Bah!
The charger is USB, so it's unclear what the issue is for you. You can either move the cable, or get a 2nd cable.
Nope, it's an ipad2 one. Guess I'll just buy another cable. I know it's early days but so far I've not really seen anything that's impressed me or any large visual difference from my old ipad2. I'm not disappointed yet, but certainly not impressed or blown away by so called 'retina'.
Funny thing after I sold my iPad 4 I used my wife's iPad 2 for a month. I could barely stand to look at the screen. My eyes are so much happier looking at a retina screen. Maybe it takes awhile for your retina's to adapt to the retina screen.
Maybe you're just getting old. ^_- Do take a look at Playdek's card games if you're having trouble seeing a difference between the displays: one thing you should notice immediately is the significant jump in legibility of the text on unmagnified cards. Other random comparisons (non-Retina always the first image):
