The huge mistake for the 3DS, IMHO, was trying to sell a dedicated gaming handheld for $250. I guess we'll find out if the Vita will fair any better at that price point. Certainly it will sell to the anxious early adopters, just like the 3DS did. What happens beyond that is the big question.

The PSP launched at $250 and Sony had no problem pushing units with a $150 competitor on it's back. Sony is willing to invest more in higher spec hardware and keep it updated without passing the buck onto consumers. My original import PSP can do everything the later models can except for TV-out. I think it's also important to remember that before the current generation of consoles none of the ones that were successful cost more then $300 at launch and then the XBOX 360 and PS3 came along and shattered that paradigm.

    @Pacificsun0481:
Just go by the games. You will still have your iPad 2, and I honestly don't think there will be any games that won't work on that in the immediate future. I can't even think of a games that my 3rd gen touch can't play, and it is getting on 2 years old! (apart from iPad-only games, and the few games that need a camera, and there just aren't enough great ones of those to convince me to upgrade just yet).
So if there are any games on the vita that you really want to play, consider getting one. :)
I personally would only get one if something that I would truly love to have on a portable device was coming to it, like a full-scale Bethesda RPG....

A full scale Bethesda Vita RPG would leave me frothing at the mouth for sure :D

There's a couple games coming along that provoke my interest:

Uncharted (never played the console brethren, I own a 360)

    Gravity (looks odd and beautiful)

    Street Fighter X Tekken

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ey_l9ECglPc

And whatever Epic is preparing (must see)

    http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CDoQtwIwAQ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D4jxgb0zlNYY&rct=j&q=ngp%20epic%20games&tbm=vid&ei=4YE8TsOTKqaNsQLo0vEp&usg=AFQjCNEs3PDQYf4qBpP5joyQ7iyQ1UUGVQ

I really want to know if the capacitive screen or touch panel are glass (screen especially, as plastic scuffs and scratches and looks horrid over time) lol

I'm becoming more sold on Vita and everyone is offering amazing insight.

    I appreciate that :)

When do you guys think it will hit stateside?

Speculations, as iPad 3 will hit March-April 2012...

I'm resisting iPad 3, however, Apple's keynote might sell it to me, lol Steve Jobs has that PT Barnum magic, eh?

So hopefully Vita drops around tax return time, or can combat Apples announcements - as people may not opt for both and they could share a similar market to tech enthusiasts or gamers.

Now I'm just getting ahead of myself and causing indecision.

Given the far distant launch date something tells me I'll have plenty of time between each iOS release and the Vita to get my iphone5, ipad3 and vita lastly in the spring. If they both launched at the exact same time though and I was forced to choose between the ipad3 and the vita I'd snag the ipad3.

Full backwards app store compatibility, much larger screen real estate and does my bills/websurfing/gaming/music/movies.

Is it really necessary for you to upgrade your ipad 2 at the first place? I say go for PSV.

+1 Idk how he can possibly say that. Also, Vita is going to have a fairly strong lineup of games. Uncharted: Golden Abyss, LittleBigPlanet, ModNation Racers, Super Stardust Delta (I loved SS HD), Little Deviants, and even the untitled Resistance and Bioshock games, plus more! Sounds to me that the lineup will be much greater than the 3DS's. Hell, you could buy a PS3 along with the Vita and it would only be $50 more than an iPad.

Mom's going to buy a ipad2 so not much need for ipad3. I'mmore torn between ds and vita. Vita has better graphics and probably better games. But there's something about nintendo that makes me wanna buy the games. I guess it's nintendo's IP. IDC about sony's IPs but pokemon, mario, etc are amazing.

You should try playing uncharted before you judge it. It's nowhere as crappy as compared to gameloft games LMFAOOOO

    I'm feeling the same thing...

My stepson has a 3DS, which I'd never taken interest in.

So this evening, I asked to see it. I had him insert Lego Star Wars 3DS, and fire the puppy up.

I played it for a few minutes, and I must say I was impressed.

Sure the games look fine without the 3D, however, after cranking that feature up a little bit, I must say I was certainly impressed.

Sure, I am one of the biggest graphics whores in existence - hence my lust for Vita and a quad core iPad -

But seeing the 3D with fine visuals, has me on the fence.

I've never been too keen on Sony or their franchises and the third party titles sell me on the Vita.

If I'm forced to pick between a 2 horse race of the iPad 3 or the Vita, a dark horse has entered the race: Nintendo 3DS.

    Especially, at the new price.

Now I really can't decide. Vita brings the super tech, but the 3DS will have a feature none of the others have and that's the ability to add depth to your games. Literally.

Not only that, Reaident Evil happens to be my ALL TIME favorite series, and I've just learned a hybrid of the old titles + the new titles is on the horizon, with good graphics, which Capcom insists doesn't fully push the system.

Color me surprised, plastic the upcoming Mario incorporated those wonderful things I loved about my childhood Super Mario 3

    Help!

Be like the majority of us and wait until the vita release, then you can choose easier.

@ Op: You've got a lot of time to decide between the two. A lot of things can change between now and then, so I'd suggest enjoying the news between the two platforms as it unfolds.

Personally, unless Apple releases an official game controller accessory or updates support in a future API, then I'm going to stick to movies/tv shows, touch-centric games, and music. Two generations into the iphone and one generation into the ipad, Ive burned myself out on high-cost gadgets. The Vita is a pittance compared. I've been a gamer since the Atari 2600 and gaming on the iDevice has left me wanting. Galaxy on Fire 2 was the best I've yet to experience (yes I played 20 generations of Infinity Blade) and it still didn't have enough depth for me.

Who was it...epic perhaps(?) that once said: all you need to do is generate 30 seconds of fun and find a way to repeat it. I believe that saying is true, whether it's a three minute game or a 300+ hour game like the Elder Scrolls series.

I also don't believe for a minute that by design these cheap games have to lack the depth of a AAA title. Take Minecraft...tons of depth, so much in fact, that it's difficult to fathom just how many hours one could spend. Of course that's due to creating a fun and rewarding concept inside a voxel engine with procedural generation. Different world every time. It doesn't have cutting edge graphics, nor does it require timeshare with Zeus to run smoothly.

Both worlds can and will bridge the gap, but Apple has to get it right in their head that tactile feedback and real controls are essential for an immersive gaming experience. Sony has to realize that the indie market is essential to developing a successful gaming platform these days. Innovation has been crushed by bigwig publishers, who bank only on trusted genres, which grow smaller every year. The indie market has brought back that innovation and generated a mass of IPs such that no industry giant will ever suppress through liquidation, consolidation, or plain lawsuit again......or so I hope.

So as it stands I'll probably end up with iPad 3 next year.

Maybe the Vita a bit into it's lifetime.

I'll sell my iPad 2, like I did with the original and pay the 100 or so in difference.

I walked into Walmart today and say the 3DS had the new rollback price of 169. So I took the plunge. Not only that, I updated the system and I also get to be a "Nintendo Ambassador" and get the 20 free games, too. Sweet!

I'd been wanting a dedicated handheld, as the iPad had me longing for a real Mario type of game.

So I figured, why not get the real thing?

I don't have another Nintendo system:

XBox 360 gives me the hardcore console titles.

iPad gives me the iOS titles

3DS gives me access to the Nintendo titles + 20 free Nintendo classics (some of which I never played as a kid) - which many iOS games attempt to emulate, but lack in Nintendo magic.

I'm by no means a fanboy, but now I feel like I get the best of each platform.

I'll enjoy Resident Evil Revelations (3DS), Skyrim and Arkham City (360) and Galaxy on Fire 2 Full HD, March of Heroes and Dark Meadow (iOS) for the foreseeable timeframe.

    Thanks for all the feedback.

Well I agree, but I read that Pokemon is still going to support mainly the DS, and not the 3DS. Mario's gameplay doesn't bring anything new to the table between new releases, and Nintendo's IP releases for the 3DS have mainly been ports (except for Kid Icarus [I think] and Mario Kart 7 or SSB, but none have even been released yet). I'm not really sure how great the 3D effect in those games work. If they truly are great, I still think the platform is being held back by 3rd party titles.

Personally, I'm waiting on both devices. I have a 3DS and actually like it, unlike most people online that talk about it. Love Zelda and SF, excited for the releases coming out, loving the online shop, and when all else fails it functions as a DSi with a better store. As a Pokemon player, I needed a second DS anyway lol.

I have a CFW PSP, and I'm fine with that for now. I'll give Vita time to grow into its own. Maybe after a price drop too. It's going to look like the expensive machine in the competition with its $250-300 tag and the 3DS' price drop. As an early adopter, I'm not mad at 3DS because most of the announced ambassador games I would have def bought anyway. Yoshi's Island, Metroid Fusion, Mario Kart, Zelda, Mario vs Donkey Kong? Hell yea. So the value evens out in the end for me.

I have a 1st gen Ipad... so what I'll do (and recommend) is hit Amazon when the Ipad 3 comes out. Find someone selling their 2 towards getting a 3. Pick up that 2 (unless you have one, then this doesn't apply). I think the Ipad 2, even the 1, still have some shelf life. I'm going to try to sell my gen 1 for $2-300 when the time comes, see if I can get a refurbished gen 2 for $400 (that's what I did for my gen 1 when the 2's came out), and then look into the Vita next holiday season.

This holiday I'm going to be pretty focused on the big holiday console releases.
