So, I was discussing the prospect of owning the PS Vita, with my partner.

I'm interested in gaming, on my own screen/own little world. Hence, why I've loved the iPad.

The Vita looks like a killer machine and the price is lower than I thought it would be.

    Here's the conundrum:

iPad 3 may be quad core, like the Vita. However, I'm longing for deeper longer gami g experiences th have phenomenal graphics.

The iPad 2 fulfills a fraction of that, as iOS games keep getting better and deeper. However, very few games are FULLY optimized for the new hardware.

Which leaves me to believe, if I get an iPad 3 it could be a couple years before games take advantage of that kind of tech.

    So...

If i can get one or the other give so e pros and cons to each: iPad 3 vs PS Vita.

    My own back and forth:

Pros: iOS lower cost, original games

Against iOS: too many casual, non deep RPG or platform or FPS games. Not really a retro gamer. Want Unreal 3 or better looking games more frequently.

I am in the exact same position as you. I have an iPad 2 and a PSP GO. I really fancy the Vita, but based on my current gaming patterns I do not know if I should stick with the iOS devices, or go with SONY.

I love playing games on the iPad, I love the big screen, the battery life, the speed of launching games, the massive capacity to store hundreds of games at once, and the price of the games.

I still like to play my PSP GO though, its easier to whip out on the train where as the iPad attracts too much attention. I love the controls on the PSP, but get annoyed at the small screen compared to the iPad. The depth of the PSP games are fantastic, but I hate that my space is limited (16GB internal and 16GB Memory Card doesnt give you much space when you consider how many games on the PSP are over 1GB).

I just can't decide. I know I will probably get the next iPad anyway, as I use it for all kinds of other things, not just gaming, but I probably will also get the VITA cos I am a sucker for new toys.

I read an article not so long ago that said although Vita may be technically better, the advances in tech mean Apple will catch up and succeed waaaaay before Sony make another portable console.

Although you speak of depth in Vita games, when looking at Uncharted, it looked no better than an iOS game, with a lot of classic Gameloft mechanics thrown in, too.

I'd go with an iPad. You know what you're getting. Constant stream of games on iOS, unlike previously on PSP where they do take a while to come out.

Also, Vita looks bloody complex! I read that it uses most of the control schemes at once in some games!

I do agre with most of your points.

My big gripe with iOS hardware (highend, anyway) is that developers shell out support to the the largest base. TRUE iPad 2 experiences are few and far between...

If the iPhone 6 isn't quad core, like iPad 3 may be (runs hot), there will be very few 4 core experiences to really justify the hardware :(

Unlike Vita, which might look better over time, think consoles

dunno not a portable system gamer, but love some of iOS.

    fretting.

Skip iPad 3. It doesnt really make all that sense to get a new iDevice every year. Get Vita (assuming the launch lineup is atleast 10x better than the abysmal 3DS lineup) and then get iPad 4 in 2013. Best of both worlds.

We got you covered with GLWG in either case :)

I second the iPad 3 skip. I obviously have a lot of love for Apple but iPad 2 will be a good game platform for a long time yet.

Since you're a developer for Vita...

Any ideas whether it could US release this year? ram halved to 256?

If you aren't able to answer those, it's cool. I appreciate the feedback.

iPad 2 is pretty good and I figure it'll be good for a year or 2 more -

Is the Vita significantly more powerful?

Epic's demo when it was an NGP look well, EPIC.

everything hands on from E3 makes Vita look like a beast, that could look better through it's life time, like a console. the graphics get better as developers get a handle on the system.

my big Vita question, is the touchscreen glass? or is it plastic? I can't find that info anywhere.

If you're going to rely heavily on gaming, I would suggest grabbing the Playstation Vita. You have the ability to start parties, have voice chat integration, etc, so think of it as a mobile Xbox 360/PS3. With the Vita starting at $250 without 3G, that's a pretty good price for something that packs a punch.

Stick with your iPad 2, so you can have the both of ways.

I'd suggest waiting to see how the Vita does before investing. Given the disastrous start for the 3DS at that price tag, I imagine most devs will take a wait and see attitude with the Vita. And I'm guessing that Sony is already taking a loss on the hardware, so they'll have less room for a price cut if sales do tank. In any case you've got time to think about it. The latest word is that the Vita will not be released before the new year anywhere other then Japan.

I really really like the specs and shit for the PS Vita. It looks... just amazing... But this is coming from someone who doesn't have the iPad either.. I really want one of those too.

Sadly my lips are sealed on detail, but I don't actually know when they're planning to launch it. As soon as possible gets my vote! :)

It's not coming out until 2012 for the US and Europe, 2011 for Japan. Edit: Damn you Spamcan ;)

I don't want an iPad at all, but this pretty much sealed a iPod Touch fifth gen purchase for me this year. No thank you, 3DS.

I wasn't sure if you being serious with this comment. Uncharted on the ps vita looks amazing, just like a full blown ps3 uncharted. And isn't that what game loft ripped off when they made shadow guardian :)

I'm definitely buying a Vita the psp was one of the best gadgets I've ever owned in terms of entertainment it gave me, totally suited the way I like to play games, was good for movies and with a little homebrew made an excellent ebook reader.

If serious console gaming isn't your main focus I'd hold off and see if Sony releases any apps I suspect they might now apple has shown there is a market for it and the device itself seems to suit the idea.

I don't think there is any possible way the Vita can be a failure whe there is a Monster Hunter game in the works for it that alone guarantees it huge sales in Asia. Me personally I'm buying it for Wipeout and Streetfighter x Tekken those two game alone are worth it for me.

    No worries :D

Can you answer, from observation at least with E3 demo units, if the screen is glass or plastic?

The iPad 3 will probably be a beast, but the iPhone 5 and iPod Touch 5 aren't even out yet (rumored A5 dual core) - so those optimizations aren't really appearing yet for iPad 2, sadly.

I figure, as the iPad arrives March/April, and iOS in the fall, it leaves over 1/2 a year with nothing to do with the new iPad. The other devices haven't made the bigger specs mainstream enough for developer interest, the OS is old hat until fall (both iOS 4 & 5) - by the time anything of value starts to happen, it's time to upgrade and go 6-7 months of wasted time.

Street Fighter X Tekken looks smashing! I'm usually not not fighters, but it looked ace in the E3 Vita reveal.

Considering Sony's recent announcement that they're putting $20 million towards
PSN games, I think your suspicions will probably prove to be correct. I'm a little bummed about today's announcement (of a delay until sometime next year), but if the PSV's delay gives games in development that much more time to be out at launch, it should be worth the wait.

get the PS vita. sure, the processing power won't be much to talk about even when it comes out, but the acceptance and demand for high quality games ( and therefore production of them) is a lot higher.

with iOS, you get mostly 99 cent titles, and a flood of complaints on even games like final fantasy tactics, which, for 16 bucks, isn't even that much.

people on idevices will continue to expect the same for a lot less, making it less plausible for triple A titles to ever appear on the system. it looks like apple stabbed itself in the foot in that respect.

however, the main selling point of the PS vita IS its lineup of high quality games. of course, the classic gameloft game doesn't look too different from a bystander's perspective, but once you've played the games gameloft clones... you'll never go back.

ironically, this is what happened to me. before i got into PC gaming, gameloft was awesome. now, whenever i buy one of gameloft's games, most of the time i delete it and think to myself: "what a waste of 5 bucks- and an hour of my life."

    I agree with wertyuio's analysis.
I think IOS is the home of indie spark and it scratches a different itch. (Actually in my case it has drawn me away from the consoles. I love that indie spark!) I don't expect many massive-budget titles to show up on it, especially ones that focus on the top-of-the range hardware. The dev base is far too big, the pricing far too aggressive and the customer expectations seem altogether different. Even if there's a great cross-platform SDK for the devs I wouldn't expect this to change things in a hurry.
Wait a bit to see if the Vita delivers on the games you like then if so, go for it.
I also had a surprising experience with a Gameloft game - hero of Sparta. I got it for PSP. Funny how my expectations change when I hold a PSP in my hands. So I load it up and I think: "Hmm. Fronts as God of War; looks kinda pretty but rather rough around the edges. But wow it's shallow! It has me even more on rails than the real GOW and it's telling me pretty much exactly what to do!". In mitigation it was a fairly enjoyable romp and much, much cheaper than the original GOW.

The Vita will be half the price. The iPad has serious portability issues. The iPad is nothing more than a poor man's laptop. You're better off just getting a laptop. As far as a pure gaming machine, there's gonna be no comparision in terms of the software. The Vita will have way better games. Of course, those games are gonna cost a whole lot more, but you get what you pay for in life. A lot of the argument might boil down to whether you are a dedicated gamer or a casual gamer. The most compelling argument for never buying an iPad remains that a laptop is just better. And it will always be better.'

Sony is doing the right thing. They are delaying the hardware until the software is ready to go. For Nintendo not to have done the same thing with the 3DS was a HUGE mistake.
