Yeah, the retina display kind've makes the GPU upgrade pointless (GPU upgrade seems like it's mainly to compensate for the resolution) Graphics will probably look just a bit better or on par with the iPad 2, just higher resolution. If they kept the iPad's original resolution, then there would be a more noticeable increase in graphical performance. It's definitely not going to produce visuals as nice looking as the Vita, because the Vita runs at a lower resolution in addition to being a dedicated gaming system (but the Vita does run more background processes than any past Sony console, so that could effect it) with a quad core CPU. New iPad does have twice as much RAM, but it won't have a very big effect on the visuals (definitely helps though). iPad 4 (or the New New iPad) may surpass the Vita in the visuals department- I think it all depends on what their focus is for the next model.

getting rid of the numbers makes sense..

except of the iphone no other of their product had a numbers tagged to it..

its ipod, imac, macbook pro, etc.

with products that get refreshed on a yearly base numeration can get arkward pretty quickly..

this year we would get the mac book pro 11 .. or the imac 19 (if you count all revisions)

does not sound so good, right? .. and thats the way they are headed with ipad & iphone.. so there is a good chance they drop the numbers on the iphone too with the next itteration.

It makes no sense IMHO. Maybe I'm living on another planet, but Apple is the epitome of planned obsolescence and conspicuous consumption. And as much as I love my iPod and indie game development, I'd be a fool not to recognize this. And, it gets tiring! I shouldn't be as frustrated as I am with my iPod, the latest generation. And now Apple is taking its own sweet time to make a 5th gen.

Apple is all hype. They consistently say the revolutionize but they don't. They are good at glamorizing things.

Take retina display for instance. What is it? Nothing but a high resolution TFT LCD display made by LG Displays. But you call it retina and it sounds amazing. Why aren't all other manufacturers jumping on board the retina train? 1. Apple prolly copyrighted the term. 2. AMOLED has proven to have its own fan base to to high contrast and saturation. 3. In theory, the bigger the screen, the farther you hold it away from your face to read, so the technical PPI can go down. 4. LG has made a new "retina" display that matches the iPhone's but is for bigger screens. Search Optimus LTE.

That's just one thing! How about the Macbook Air or chiclet keys!? The first app store!?

The thing is, I actually appreciate Apple for helping to bridge design gaps. But the sad thing is they create basic designs and then throw out patent infringement lawsuits like there's no tomorrow. From my understanding, you can't own a design philosophy. And the thing is they were heavily inspired by things of the past. people forget that there are a ton of PCs. You never thought that there was something that resembled Apple's products!/

And, no, I'm not a fanboy of anything. I've owned an iPhone, I own an iPod 4, and I'm sorta planning on getting an iPod 5 if they release one. I also own an Android phone currently. I've actually only ever owned one windows device - my laptop. All other windows devices were owned by my household. I do plan on getting a Win8 phone though. Edit: I forgot about console systems. I guess I was thinking in terms of computers and mobile devices. Yes, I've owned/used console systems by pretty much all companies. Again, I'm not a fanboy to any particular system. If I'd had to pick I'd choose the 360 because of Xbox live, but I don't have anything against Nintendo or Sony.

Nah! the only reason we might go in circles is because people just deliberatle say Apple is the sh*t. That's there one and only argument. Now, I'm not saying that about everyone, but it's a common comeback for Apple-only fans.

If Apple had it their way you'd own three of their "superior" devices (upgraded as much as possible), and you'd always be looking to them for pricey/frustrating life support.

It's just like retina for the iPad 3. I wonder if a store nearby has a Slate 7 on display!? I really want to see how much better the screen is than the 1366x768 Superbright Plus Display.

I would say the retina display makes the GPU upgrade essential, not pointless. Even with the higher res, I think the new iPad will outstrip the iPad 2 and look very impressive doing so with that new display. I bought my iPad 2 expecting to see '12 times graphics performance of iPad1' games, but soon realised that'd rarely/never happen. Graphically, the iOS platform is, to an extent, restricted by the need to be backward compatible.

We get amazing variety and bargain with iOS, but after picking up a Vita on Saturday, there's a clear distinction between the two, and on the whole I'd rather not see the iPad compete in the same way. Most of the best iOs game/experiences don't rely on top end graphics, and I see no reason for that to change.

I'm impressed Apple have, allegedly, managed to retain the 10hours battery life with the new iPad. :)

    With best intentions, 2 questions:

    1. Where do you get the energy?
    2. Why not apply it to something productive?

    LOl, no problem!

It's the morning and it took me like 5 minutes to type all of that, so I didn't really exert too much energy. Plus, I've been up for a while. And, I haven't been on TA all weekend.

Trust me! My TA life doesn't really interfere with my real one.

I'd wager you might get 'the shakes' if it were taken away from you ;)

Lol... maybe. It has been a pretty awesome place when it comes to iOS gaming. I didn't really have any place to discuss it before - mobile gaming in general. As I've stated before, my friends either don't game ( at all or anymore) or are console/PC gamers. As hardcore iOS gamers, we seem to be a small sect.

But, yeah, it's something that I very much enjoy during the week and can do leisurely.

I'd just be back where I was before October last year.
