People aren't excited coz pretty much everything was leaked before hand. And then there were some inaccurate rumours too (like haptic feedback) which didn't make it in the new iPad. They just fail to realize how much better this is than the previous ipad, let alone anything else available in the market today. A 4x bump in resolution (which makes it the highest res display 99.9% of us have ever seen in life, let alone owned one) is an "incremental" update for them somehow!

Its a system on a chip. So the CPU and GPU are on the same chip.

At least I think thats the case.

No idea how this SoC stuff works (other than the fact that its great for portables compared to separate gpu, cpu) but I'm just quoting apple here.

Meh. I'll pass on it. Love how they have to constantly reassure themselves that it's amazing though. It seems like they try to wedge 'revolutionary', 'amazing/wonderful', and 'innovative' into as many sentences possible. Not that it's anything new though.

What I really want is a new iPod touch. Or iPhone. But I want cool new features too, not just a few upgrades.

They don't need to reassure themselves at this point. Just look at the sales figures of iPhone 4S. Is there seriously any doubt that iPad 3 is not going to break all of iPad 2's records? Name one other electronics company which wouldn't kill to perform half as well as apple did with iPad 2.

Lol! Agreed! It's Apple's way of using subliminal messaging/advertising.

Obviously the retina display is going to be amazing for web browsing - it'll make it actually easy to browse in portrait mode and be able to read the type nice and clear, so websites would be almost like magazines, with a lot on screen at once, very cool.

Obviously games will benefit a lot from the GPU as well.

Otherwise though, same device, I can't see myself selling my Samsung Galaxy Tab for it just yet.

That being said I'll likely have to get one for developing games for the retina display...

I really wonder how movies will look on it. With such a high res display, movies running at 1080p might not look so good. Do they plan on selling movies at a higher res than1080p? They wouldn't be able to go too much higher, because the new iPad is higher res than the theatrical versions of movies.

What I think the case is and I could be completely wrong here:

With the A5 dual core, 1 core was for CPU processing and the other for GPU.

With the A5X 2 cores for the CPU and 2 Cores for the GPU. Or 1 Core for the CPU and 3 for the GPU, or 3 for CPU and 1 for GPU.

I think its 2 and 2 for the A5X that way each processor recieves a bit of a bump in performance. you are dealing with 4 times the amount of pixels of the iPad 2. So the CPU and GPU need to be a lit beefier inorder to stand up to Apples standards, as well as everyone elses.

thats why they incoporate the wide screen black bars on the top and bottoms of the movie. In reality the resolution of the video itself may be smaller than 1080p, but advertised as such.

Im pretty sure Apple has gotten this issue worked out.

and I would think that video playback aspect ratios play a role in this somehow.

again i could be completely wrong.

the movies will look as good.. since there is usualy no aliasing going in movies, they get scaled up a bit wich is not really noticeable.. especially not with thoose few pixel difference in width

and usualy movies do not incorporate any black bars themself.. rip a dvd or bluray and check the source.

I tried to watch the keynote I usually do, but I couldn't take it this time when he got to the stage of them claiming people with e-ink readers prefer ipads for reading. Then he said the same about console gamers etc I just sighed and turned it off.

Jobs had a way of making you listen even when he was talking nonsense the new guy just makes me dislike him.

why is it nonsense? i spend more time gaming on the ipad than on any other platform.

and did he say e-ink ? i recall a more general termn but anyway. if i have an iapd why should i use it not?

tims statements makes sense since they asked ipad customers. so if you make a survey amongst your fanbase this is the expected outcome not?

Truthfully everything I watched was nonsense including the very start where they claimed iPhones and iPods were post pc devices (replaced PC's).

I did read the new iPad specs though and it seems a decent upgrade I did find it interesting it's now thicker and heavier that must be a first for Apple.

Trying to find more info on this A5x chip. People are talking it is just a overclocked A5 with a quad core gpu on board to handle the workload of the new retina display. Does this meen the clock cycles are the same as the Ipad 2? And the additional ram is also added for the new retina displays calculations? So essentially its a suped up ipad 2?

Also wonder why they didnt go with the A6 quad core chip which is already being produced? Just waiting for benchmarks before I sell off the old ipad 2 for a new model :S

AnandTech believes that the A5X is running the same dual-core Cortex A9 CPU as before, but now features a PowerVR SGX543MP4 GPU, instead of the the dual-core PowerVR SGX543MP2. Apple says that the A5x GPU is twice as powerful as the A5 found in the iPad 2 and four times more powerful than NVIDIA's Tegra 3 chipset. And overall, the chipset is believed to be twice as powerful as the Tegra 3. Whoa.

I find it interesting the GPU is basicly the same as the one used in the Vita (SGX543MP4+) the difference being Sony's own gaming enhancements. Although of course the Vita has a quad core cpu as well and less pixels to push.

Based on everything I'm reading I'm thinking the iPad 3 is probably a little slower than the second in real world usage but people likely won't care as the 2nd never got pushed hard anyway and the retina screen will more than make up for it.
