How many good tablets were out before the first gen iPad?

Well there was the Newton...oh wait...

Fact is there were plenty of Good tablets before the iPad. Apple has a blindly loyal fanbase so no matter what they put out it was bound to sell. The Newton wasn't actually bad, the problem was never a good/bad product but timing and technology. Fujitsu put out a tablet in 1993 that was the first to use an integrated wireless LAN.

Timing is everything, and that's what Apple knows best. Newton excepted of course.

And just as an fyi, Apple wasn't the first company to make a touchscreen tablet, that distinction goes to the GRidPad which came out in 1989.

People who argue Apple products purely on tech specs remind me of musicians screaming at Rock Band fans to learn real instruments, the point seems to have missed them entirely. Yeah, hardware wise all the tablets across the board are pretty similar, but it's about software and accessibility. Five years ago I would have totally been on board with an Andriod tablet but I moved to the Apple ecosystem because I was fed up with the bullshit. I moved beyond the stage where I considered myself a "hobbyist", putting together my own desktops, reinstalling windows every six months and playing around with UI customization. I consider my relationship with my computing products these days more along the same lines of my toaster and I'm much happier for it. Last time I checked I did not have to wait six months for a bug fix for my toaster because I'm at the mercy of the manufacturer's whims to actually release the firmware update or root my toaster and download a custom firmware to deal with an issue. Also my toaster is completely malware free, just has some old crumbs in it.

Hope this is the right place to ask...

Yes, I've drank the purple kool-aid and I must have! But I have the wifey to convince; here's my situation:
    1. I already am the proud owner of a iPod Touch 2G(8GB) and a iPod Touch 4G(32GB).
    2. I've chunked hundreds upon hundreds of dollars in iPod apps already.
    3. I already own a notebook PC(and yes it's not a Mac-remember I'm on a budget).

So should I truly invest in the iPad 2? I have a 5 year old son and I've seen that there's a vast amount of apps on the educational side(which there's a lot I already own via iPod) that are iPad exclusive. I mainly use my idevices for gaming.

So the big question is-would it be be a good investment for this middle-aged guy? Or should I just stick to my iPod? And yes this would look awesome on my HDTV(any speculation on the price of that adapter?).

    Thanks TA forum members!

    Adapter they said costs $39

And by the sounds of things, you may as well upgrade. Or why not give your iPad to your child and get a new one for you?

When I first read about the features I went meh.

When I watched the product video from Apple I went "I WANTZ IT NOW!!"

    They suck me in. Everytime!

The only thing it will hurt is the battery life with the current battery. I don't think i'd like any compromise on current battery life.

I never got the 1st iPad. But will be getting the 2nd now it has HDMI out and kicks out a little more juice :p

I know I'm in the minority but I couldn't justify buying one, for the price of the 64gb model which I consider to little space for my needs I might as well get an alienware m11x netbook which I'd probably use more.

I admit the ipad 2 would be a nice toy and it does have hundreds of uses but you only really get a year out of them (or less if rumours about another this year are true) before the next one makes them obsolete. I'm not saying it's a bad buy but I'd be a lot more tempted by a slightly smaller one or if it had a longer shelf life.

Being hypocritical though I might well buy the ipod 5th gen which I'm sure will have similar specs but does suit my needs a little better.

They are very good at that. They use a lot of psychological buzzwords like magical, special, amazing, game changing and ground breaking every time they launch something. Can't fault them for that as it appears very successful.

I'm someone who mostly puts specifications and durability above most other concerns and I've never really understood the making it thinner at all other costs thing apple does probably as well I don't run apple really.

It bemuses me that people who never lived with an iPad before tend to have such vocal opinions. I mean, sure, it's not for everyone, but going as far as accusing buyers of being blind Apple followers is just a wee bit too much.

I think this update is quite impressive.

Do you know for sure these people have never "lived with an iPad"? Owning an iPad does not automatically make you a fan, perhaps they bought one and had all of their fears confirmed.

Please enlighten me, how is that pathetic?

From a usability standpoint as a portable multimedia + ebook device it pretty much kills most of it's competitors:

    1) Lighter and thus causing less strain to your hands. Meaning longer time to enjoy using it as a gaming and ebook device.

    2) Thinner and lighter makes it more portable than it's competitors.

    3) Access to tens of hundreds of apps/games at day one.

I think its pathetic that you try to justify it to somebody who doesn't really care.

Well I have no idea. Why wouldn't one care about the way he/she handles the gaming device?

So weight doesn't matter at all when it comes down to a portable gaming device? Really?

As an eBook device alone it still fails in comparison to the almighty Kindle though :)

That said, it sold more than Kindle did in 2010, but so many people these days just aren't into reading so it's not a fair comparison.

I don't know for sure, but according to statistics and personal experience, most iPad owners are quite happy/satisfied with them, and that most haters never actually used one for a significant amount of time.
