Ios games will get deeper, they just aren't yet at the moment. But really, how long have consoles been around? 20years? That means that they have like a headstart of 15 years, they SHOULD have more depth. Just give iOS a few more years and we will get there too.
This pretty much sums it up to me. I love iOS gaming, don't get me wrong, but it really is a totally different world to console gaming right now. When an iOS game with a ton of depth and a lengthy campaign comes along, it just about matches up with a short, shallow console experience. There are loads of reasons why people might prefer iOS and mobile gaming in general, but for me it's really about how deep the experience is and how much of my time it's gonna suck up without being too repetitive, i.e. not just spending a thousand hours playing Doodle Jump. Then there's the issue of many games simply not controlling quite as well on a touchscreen, you've either got to make sacrifices or design a simpler game from the beginning, both of which mean taking a step down from the amount of interactivity you get with a console game.
Just to add to this, I used to play on consoles and handhelds all the time. With a daughter, family life and work - I hardly get any time in! I have a PS3 sitting downstairs that I hardly play on and I stare at a computer all day so sitting in an uncomfortable chair is out! I love the fact that with the iPhone / iPad, I can just sit on the sofa and relax as well as share the experience with my daughter.
Actually posted this in another thread! Just some food for thought! "Plus, like yourself, I've observed the progression of games/gaming. It seems that Apple makes the excuse that they need to sell a $500 device every year (that you need to buy for the latest and greatest) to compensate for cheap games. But the thing is Apple rakes in profits no matter what; developers don't. Apple also doesn't do anything about anti-piracy, which plenty of developers has said is a problem. These are couple of the defining factors that separate console from mobile, IMO." It's somewhat vague, but we started out talking about 64gb vs 128gb devices. It just a couple things in the console vs. iOS debate. I'll elaborate tomorrow if need be.
I used to buy six or more disc based console games every year, now it's rarely more then two. The overwhelming majority of purchases these days are XBLA and iOS titles and I use them about evenly. If things keep going the way they are I might be through with consoles after this generation anyway. A console game in 2005: - Game ($60) A console game in 2006: - Game ($60) - Superfluous same day DLC ($3-5) - Minor additional DLC packs ($5-10) A console game in 2011: - Exclusive pre-order DLC incentive (With different DLC offered at every store! YAY!) - Game ($60) - Online Pass DLC (Put in a code for basic features the first time you play any new game so the publishers can get their $10 for used games.. fun!) - "Season Pass" DLC ($20-30 for new content that won't make up for the fact that the core game is 1/3rd shorter then the last installment) - Same day DLC ($3-5 for even more stuff not included in the season pass!) - Additional DLC ($3-5 per character, vehicle or map because you haven't really bought a game until you've paid at least $80 for it)
You could always use a little self control and purchase "Game (60$)" and nothing else. I hardly buy any DLC, most of it is cosmetic rubbish anyway. If it's a quality extension to the game I might give it a shot, but then the price will be completely justified anyway.
What games have online pass and season pass DLC? I must've been out of the loop for a while! I used to be a hardcore gamer and I never spent more than $250 in one year for games. I usually didn't even reach that because if it wasn't MP we would trade games. You can't do this on iOS, that I know of. You're also able to rent games or buy them used. Lastly consoles get supported for about 8 years. Mobile devices get supported for maybe 2 years nowadays, and if you want the latest/greatest you have to upgrade every year. iDevices aren't cheap either. There's also a few developers that are trying to start the trend of "we make a premium game, you pay a premium price". I like this but things can get fishy if you need to be on the newest model. I really do think Apple's marketing is sketchy, so I say watch out everybody!!!
Ah, but GJ, the thing you're missing is that more people buy the device with each passing generation and not the opposite. Clearly, there are more than enough people who are willing to and are renewing their iDevice annually to make it more than profitable for Apple to continue their trend. The sales for first few months of the iPhone 4S surpass the sales of the iPhone 4 for that same length of time. Sales for the iPad 2 and iPad 1 aren't even comparable. No doubt, many more people have a 4th gen. iPod than the amount of those who have a 3rd gen. as well.
I definitely agree with you!!! It's just a horrible trend in my personal opinion. But the business/marketing side of me says everything these companies are doing is brilliant. Make us a slave to the market; exactly why Apple has more money than the US treasury. But yeah, this is all a huge economic debate. I've been in it for a while now on other sites. What we usually come to realize is that it's a purely capitalist government ruled by the few, especially in the USA. You should read Warren buffet's book!
The online pass is a growing trend in an attempt to earn the developers money from used game sales, pretty much every major game has it now. I don't disagree with it though, if you haven't bought a game new, you haven't helped support the people who made it, so they have every right to request payment in exchange for letting you use the online services. Of course, I only buy new games anyway and you get a pass in the case, so it hasn't affected me. The only game I've seen so far with season pass DLC is Saints Row the Third. It specifically states that you save 15% by purchasing the pass now instead of buying the DLC seperately, so... it doesn't seem too bad to me. If you don't like it you have the option of buying the DLC individually and potentially spending more money. The real problem lies with Modern Warfare 3 and it's elite subscription... I don't even want to go into that garbage.
Ah, thanks for clearing that up. I haven't been to into console games lately. I see the point of the used game thing, but not everyone can afford a brand new game. Again, this is all purely economics and I know I probably shouldn't be getting into a debate her or move it to the lounge; but I don't really want to have that conversation here because I think it will be heavily misconstrued and overly biased. it needs to be had with people who have a somewhat strong foundation in economics and trends, or something like that. Also, if you look at something like COD sales, they could spare a few used games IMHO. I quote: Edit Not saying devs don't deserve it, just looking at all angles.
Yeah, that's precisely why I'm against COD's subscription so much. They're one of the biggest selling game franchises in history yet they still feel the need to squeeze even more money out of the consumer with this crappy service. They've actually taken the effort to sit down and work out how they can continue to take from people even after they've supported them by buying the game in the first place. Surely profits are high enough they can be thanking the gamers by providing this for free?
Yeah, I heard a little about it, but Activision and COD lost a player a while ago; not that it really matters. Did you hear about Apple's game subscriptions?
I am sorry to say that iOS gaming does not even come close to console gaming. The controls and graphics are not good at all compared to console, and they probably never will be. Sure, iOS is great for casual gaming on the go, but I can't see anyone becoming hardcore on iOS. Console gaming will always be better, thanks to uncomparable graphics and spot on, easy, and comfortable controls. Don't get me wrong, I love iOS gaming and think its great, but it never will be as good as console. Period.
I don't think a lot of people, necessarily, think that iOS gaming will be on par with console at a technical level. I think it's more of a fun factor. I really enjoy plaing on my iPod. I have been a hardcore console gamer since the N64 (also owned the sega systems), but have found myself playing mobile games more because I can do it leisurely and on the go. The only games that will grace my Xbox are Fable, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Battlefield (though I no longer have live). Also, trust me; being in college and getting a jump start on my career has definitely thrown me at portable gaming. Not enough time to continuously play console games. Androids and iDevices are just taking over as the main portable gaming systems. I bet the PSP Vita won't save anything. The only reason the DS survives is because parents are more likely to get their kid a DS instead of an iDevice, IMHO. I'm being a bit vague and brash because I want to move on to a new topic... Haha yeah! Personally, I think we should be comparing the iDevices to the new android devices when it comes to gaming. Have you seen the new Galaxy Nexus? I could get used to doing my portable gaming on something like that. I watched pretty much every Pocketnow video on it; beast! Been thinking about starting a new thread talking about mobile gaming specifically. TBH, you either play console and mobile simultaneously or you pick a side. With next gens coming out soon, no iOS will probably not catch up. Let's talk about something more closely related. ^
I think for casual gaming IOS can't be beat. nintendo 3ds in close second for a more immersive experiance, co op,social gaming ,I go console for a more technical option/higher end graphics gaming, mod gaming and mmo you just can't beat pc gaming.(until next gen consoles can actually push higher end graphics)
Pretty much how I feel from a technical standpoint. Here's the thing though: iOS will never catch up to console and console will never catch up to PC. I don't even think most people here know what a overclocked gaming desktop can really do. Well for starters, it can run your car.
