Well, I can play my fav genres on my iPod. And for me: Console > iOS > Portable Modern Combat 3 - FPS FIFA 12 - Soccer Zombieville 2 - Arcade Dead Space - Horror Shadow Gun - TPS Real Racing 2 - Racing Aralon - RPG ...
I can say that the PSP had some good titles like : the GTA's,Resistance,God of War,but nothing more.I had a PSP for ~2 years and barely played on it lately. But that's never been the issue with my iPhone/iPad.There are so much good games, whom graphics are way better than PSP games, also the resolution is much worse on PSP 480x272.When I took screenshots of games they looked terrible on PC.About the PS3 scene I can say that it's more stable.PS3 is like it was made by another company not Sony. It's mandatory to have a PS3 only to play Uncharted.I played both 3,and they're my all-time-favorite games. Also I see a very huge potential in portable gaming for iOS.The NDS,3DS,PSP doesn't even have the slightest chance.
I haven't touched any console game since I got my iPod touch. Before that I found my self not enjoying playing video games as much besides a select few. With the iPod I I feel like I play non stop, I dunno I guess with consoles or gameboys etc.. It feels like ur being labeled as some loser or whatever, but on iPod everthing a normal person uses is connected in with the gaming part. Also console gaming is expensive and usually ull get bored and run out of games to choose from but with iOS u can get about 20-50 games for the price of one console game. I think alot of the games are innovative and more addicting plus u can get a variety of different kinds of games to keep you occupied. A few years ago I would never have imagined iPhone being a good gaming console now I think its on the path to replacing video game consoles all together. I'm glad now that video games are played by everyone now rather than looked at as something for just kids, it's our generation that grew up with it and its something weve takin with us. I plan on playing the new Zelda game soon but after that I just don't see my self playing anything other than iPod games. Apple has definitely made it's impact on video games and will be a huge contender in the future. I think it's the best change since nintendo, Sony and Microsoft took a direct approach against nintendo but Apple kind of just slipped in unnoticed. And since almost every kind of game from playstation and xbox are going to apples devices it only leaves nintendo with the other popular Franchises. And it's not just portable gaming with the apple tv it's in direct competion with consoles. Right now I Would rate iOS gaming as better and more fun than any console. Without it I probly wouldn't even be playing video games.
Depends. I like console games that will never be on the iPad (skyrim, RAGE, Halo reach etc), but I like portable gaming too. I'm more for portable gaming because the iPad doesn't get as boring as the Xbox for some reason. But the iOS does have games for a cheaper price, which is great, but the quality of most games don't compare to Xbox games.
Long time ago, I used to play Warcraft (about 6 years) and WoW (for like 7 years also, since first beta). Actually, these two were my best (only) choice, for I was using then Mac OS (9, X). Later on, when I moved to Intel-Macs and Windows (the only 'proper' gaming system -.-), I couldn't find anything similar or good enough to stay within. Sure, you'll say 'oh cmon, there's a plenty of such' but... Rarely, I'm playing now League of Legends, but it doesn't catch my attention for long. When I bought my first iPad year ago, I wasn't using it much at first. My impressions about iOS gaming changed with games like Battleheart, Deadspace, Dungeon Defenders etc etc... Nowadays, the only things I'm using my iMac is to get some documents to school or download some music/videos. iPad is my only gaming platform and I'm really happy because it is cheap, easy to use and convenient. For sure, graphically it cannot be compared to consoles or high-end PCs. But I think it might change very soon. I don't know what iPad 3 will bring on, but in my opinion iOS gaming is going in a really good direction.
I used to be a major games addict, LOVED my first computer back in the 80's, then the Amiga, Megadrive (Genesis), Playstation etc, loved it. But now my priorities have changed, got a baby and married, cant keep plugging in some console for hours at a time when my wife obviously wants my time, baby does. Plus games on consoles seem to be quite silly prices, again got other priorities now. Would rather spend £30 on a toy for the baby than £30 on a console game i might play for only a week iOS gaming is superb for me, can quickly pick up a game and have a few minutes on it here and there when i've got a break from things. Games are superb cheap as well meaning i can buy a lot, a ton of variety. In a world where if i lived on my own or didnt have a kid etc i would probably be buying tons of console games. But iOS gaming totally suits me, its totally got me back into video gaming big time as i spent a fair few years just playing retro stuff.
I think it all comes down to what you expect your gaming to do for you. If you are after a deep, immersive experience whilst gaming, there isn't any doubt that consoles have more to offer. However, if you seek quick, challenging gameplay, such as shooting for high scores or puzzle solving, then iOS offers a cheap, portable and satisfying solution. Personally, i'm for the latter. Whilst I love the occassional session of bioshock, due to the fact I have two young children most of my gaming comes in small time blocks. I gain a lot of satisfaction beating my highscore on infinity field, or working out a couple of levels in helsings fire. I am from the old school though, where gaming was always about being on top of the high score table
Do agree with that on the whole BUT i must admit when i 'discovered' Aralon i was completely hooked, second my wife fell asleep at night i would be playing Aralon on my ipod ! Huge epic game and incredible its something you can get on iOS. But yeah its great to have a quick blast of some shooting game, or platform game and do a few levels and turn it off. Just great for getting some quality gaming in time and time again. Must admit my daughter (14 months) loves the ipod, got some 'baby apps' for her and its incredible seeing her swipe the screen to go from page to page.
You are right. These devices are more than capable of handling big and deep gameplay experiences. The issue is with price and development costs.
iOS games = low quality, no games with good story, soundtrack and cutscenes iOS gaming is best to school, and bus, but is not for longplay or for story-loving gamers... ( sorry for my bad english )
Actually, I do not agree with you. Tell me that Aralon, Sacred Oddysey, Fantastic Knight, Exitium, Deadspace or any other games like these, made for iOS don't have good story or long play. For sure, most of iOS games experience is based on a specific and short story/action, which is suitable for those who are in constant movement. Even though, I found many like these funny and addictive, and they made me to spend a lot of time. (at least you're using English ^^)
^Agree with Xenosage Theres many great games out there with a lot of depth with a good story/cutscenes etc as pointed out by yourself. I must admit i'm not too bothered by a story/cutscenes myself, just want a great playable game but Aralon/Dead Space etc have it all in my view. Before i got an ipod touch i must admit i thought all games would be quite basic, 'puzzle' type games, good for a quick run on the bus/train and nothing special How wrong i was, theres a huge great depth to gaming on iOS, there are quick games to be played, theres also huge in depth ones, great platform games with plenty of levels and a lot of 'just one more try....' attempts. A great variety of games so i disagree completely with Whiteplayer3d's view. Try playing Aralon and tell me you completed it in two bus journeys to school!
I find portable gaming more fun then console gaming, but only games that are slanted more to a hardcore/dedicated gamer experience. Console-quality games on a portable device. Very few iOS games meet this sort of a standard. Premium gaming is hard to find on this particular platform. The best option is a high-powered gaming laptop, to be honest. You can also hook up a wireless 360 controller and plug a laptop into your TV with an HD cable, so it's a hard option to beat. But I also own 10 3DS games, dozens of PSP games that I bought at discounted prices, and around 450 iOS games. The real kicker here is the thought of ps3 remote play on the new PS-Vita. It's possible that you will be able to stream and play every game in the ps3 library onto your Vita. You'll have a portable Ps3, basically, and be able to play it anywhere you go. The possibilities are limited with the iOS, but I still purchase pretty much every game that I consider to be a serious gaming effort. Shadowgun, Dark Meadow, Monster Hunter, Devil May Cry, Dead Rising, Need for Speed; all that stuff. Plus every non-freemium Gameloft game. Too bad EA seems to have significantly downsized their iOS support recently.
A lot of great points. Dead space, infinity blade, shadow gun, real racing 2, dark meadow, and the other games you all mentioned impressed me a lot. I never been to much into knowing a lot about story, I just play for fun and iOS provides that. I just hope iOS doesn't go freemium because that would ruin it
First of all, I would like to say that I fully respect everyone's opinion on this subject, I would only like to give my own opinion: I think iOS vs. console gaming is actually not a fair comparison. It's like trying to compare an apple with a pear. They're both fruits, yes, but that is the only thing they have alike. I just mean that it is unfair to try to compare and iphone/ipod/ipad game with the average PS3 game. Of course the graphics are better, of course there is more content and of course the gameplay and storyline of most PS3 games are better than most iOS games. But on the other hand, for 1 PS3 game, which costs like 30-60 euros, you can buy around 20 iOS titles (or more). Count the playing time of those games together, and you can certainly have more playing time than wth your 1 PS3 game. And you've got 20 different games, all with different gameplay, genre and story (if you buy good games at least). Does that bore quickly? I'm not sure. For example: the average, well-made RPG in the appstore (between 0,99 or 2,99 euros) can keep you busy for over 5-6 hours. Of course, I also have to admit that most PS3 and Xbox360 titles are simply much higher quality than the average iOS title. But, and we have a PS3 and Xbox360 ( and a Wii and 2 PSP's and 2 DS's) at home too, you can find an enormous amount of original and fun games in the app store. And this for a low price too. I mean, if you download an app in the app store of 0,99 euros or even free (i have never seen PS3 titles free before, while there are a lot of apps free every day) and you notice after some time that you don't really like it, then what have you lost? Almost nothing. On the other hand, if you buy a console title and you notice after some time that there are things in the gameplay that bother you or if the game/story is just boring, you wll have lost like 30 euros or more. To make it short: iOS and consoles shouldn't be compared (yet). At the moment they are still completely different markets. I have to say though, that I think (with the hardware of the iDevices steadily increasing) that in 1 or 2 iDevice generations, we will have AAA titles on the app store. Then this comparison will be fair. @Whiteplayer3d : No need to apologise for not being a native English speaker. I'm not a native English speaker either and even though I speak English quite fluently, I also make some mistakes. Practice makes perfect
most newcomers go through this 1. This is really a psychological realization that your mind never gave much thought to. 2. Almost everyone that dares to dive "deep" into the endless sea of iOS gaming becomes overwhelmed with price/quality/ease of access, at some point. This release of dopamine in the brain gives the impression that it is more exciting when really it's just more "new" to you. Once hand cramps kick in, you'll start looking at the PS3 controller with more friendly glares. 3. It isn't that it's better, just more is probably going on. I felt that way when there weren't any good console titles. After BF3 and Skyrim, I'm back to the console. I did take a break last night for Infinity Blade II and Black Ops Zombies, but was surprised by the quality of Zen pinball.
even forget the price, just compare the gameplay between ios and console, sometimes IOS is still much better to me. as a old gamer,i was playing counter strike 10 years ago, but i still dislike almost any kind of console FPS game, because I'm a sucker at that,I barely killed others in multiplayer mode. It's not I dislike FPS game, I'm just born to be suck at button control or mouse & keyboard. but in ios FPS game, such as nova 2 or modern combat 3, I feel much better. joystick or direction control at keyboard is better than touch control at ios to me, but overall, IOS is much better. for another example, i enjoy the gangstar 3 more than the GTA. I exactly know GTA is great and superior in all aspects, but it only makes me angry when I tried 10 times and still failed a quest in san andreas. street fighter is another example to me,I just hate how to use super combo and special move so much in the tradtional way. console SF can never compare to IOS in my eyes, even not close. I can never enjoy SF before there is a IOS version. many people say touch control sucks, but to me in some cases, traditional control sucks more. and i can never enjoy any turn based rpg no matter how good the storyline is, and i hate puzzle game in rpg games. I dont say story is not important, but I prefer real time action with many skills/super combo/special move. I'm not a gamevil fanboy, I dislike all their games but zenonia 3 and destinia. when people talking about how great Final fantasy is, but to me, its another story. I like IOS more.
I think the proper comparision is IOS vs. DS becuase both are portable. I feel there are some games that compare but most games lack depth. Take a popular game like pizza boy , its suppose to be iphones version of Mario bros. Yet there are no power-up to change your charactor and make him improve. Your stuck with what you got which is ok but shows lack of depth. Take another game like 1-bit ninja your forced one way only, only have one temporary power-up and I yet to see a boss battle. The game is fun , but is lacking in depth. Thats why iphone games will never be better, because lack of depth in games.
