Actually I was specifically talking about the controls for GTA. I know for sure full touch is suitable for a variety of other games. (often limited and 'minigame' in nature however)
Again, not necessarily. From my experience with War of Eustrath, touchscreens are an excellent way to control an SRPG. Turn based RPGs can also benefit from touch controls. And I'd much rather play an FPS on the iPhone than on a DS or a PSP. As far as I'm concerned, it has nothing to do with the depth of the game. I do agree that GTA plays better with analog controls combined with touchscreen.
So basically all your points are "you're wrong and i'm right because I said so"? There are many people who would say that there's absolutely nothing wrong with continuing to play 32 bit games. The limited medium and simplicity of the 32-bit style created some really amazing games that are extremely rare on newer consoles today. You are right though, in that there is a big difference between the iDevices and Nintendo Handhelds- mostly because the Nintendo Handhelds have been developed over a longer span and have improved with newer technology. The iDevice, however, has been and will continue to be backward and forwards compatible as long as programmers want to reach the largest possible audience. And yes- we are comparing apples and elephants.
I can't believe the number of people posting in this thread who are concerned about how you would look while playing a 3DS. Is that seriously a concern for anyone above the age of 12? Gah, my brain hurts.
Depends on the games actually.. Nintendo has propelled the DS above the iPhone 4 in my opinion. THat does not mean either will fail. The inclusion of a joystick on the 3DS along with a real touchscreen now and 3D and gyroscope and the ability to play movies and music now can not be underestimated. I love the iPhone because its still a PHONE! I carry it everywhere. I will only play the DS at home. Both are leagues better than the PSP..
I still love my GBA games(on my DS CHUNKY) & even my GBC games (on my GBA). Those were some of the best Zeldas made IMO. I think, however, that with iOS 4 not going to the little under-powered first gen, that more and more new games will become 2nd gen, and up. I'm thinking that will be the norm in a couple years. Just like I waited until the App Store came to fruitation & waiting for the 360, I will wait until these games are cheaper. Actually, I should get a 360 this summer. GOW for $10 & GOW 2 for $15. GTA IV for $30. Among others.
You clearly don't know much about games from other companies, right? Now on topic, it's great to see all the positive impressions about 3DS. Seems like the consensus is that this thing is spectacular. Nintendo also said that the battery life will be around DSi standards, so that's good too.
Depends, have you any common sense? If so you'd know that no, iDevices aren't on all the time, and with you all the time. Sure, they can be, but so can a blowtorch. It's entirely subjective and depends on the user, it's not something that automatically puts it above the competition. And yes, adults do play DS in public, that's not "because I said so", it's because they do.
Or maybe YOU don't have any common sense and don't realize just how common MP3 players are for basically everyone now. To put it simply, the issue is cost vs. need. MP3 players have become more of a need than gaming devices. It's a bonus that you can get some fun, addictive, and well-made games for (extremely) cheap to go with your MP3 player. I don't necessarily think that this will happen. Of course, the quality and complexity of games will increase as developers gain experience and bigger companies buy it, but there are still tons of very popular games which don't demand heavy resources. Doodle Jump, 100 Rogues, All-In-One-Gamebox, and even Plants vs. Zombies (which works very well except for occasional slowdown on older devices), for example. The effects on the older, less powerful devices will not really be a big issue like it is for games that are heavily focused on graphics and complicated things like on consoles.
I think its been said before... the iPhone and nintendo 3DS will coexist peacefully. Both occupy a completely different market and serve different purposes.
I don't get that either. I'm 18 and I have no issues whipping out my DS Brick in public. Those people can snicker or whatever they want, wont detract from my fun playing Fire Emblem or Tales of Phantasia.
So first of all you say the impressive developers don't impress you then you say the iPhone publishers impress you. The iPhone publishers you mentioned have all made games for the ds and alf of them are in the launch lineup. All these games are being made by the main group instead of iPhones 5th 6th lame groups. Seriously the only time you get main group to create a game are generally not spin offs but the main games in the series such as final fantasy 12,13 etc. Even ff14 is the 2nd group. So I just want to say that it all depends on what type of person you are. If you want minigames (lots of people play Mario party) then go for idevice. But if you want full fledged indepth games well my friend, you need to buy a gaming device.
Well, it's a matter of fact that most of the games announced aren't impressive - except the ones by Nintendo or Square Enix. It's no secret that most people -lke me- buy Nintendo devices only to play Nintendo games. Of course there are some good third party titles, but don't try to make me believe they are more important than they really are... I totally disagree with you. If you read my post again, you'll see that I was impressed by Nintendo and Square Enix. That's all. Most of the other announcements for the 3DS didn't impress me (moreover: I was NOT impressed by the new Zelda for Wii, too!). I don't need to buy a gaming device for full fledged indepth games, because I already have an iPhone. Of course, Shrek Kart is NOT Mario Kart, Rolando is NOT New Super Mario Bros. and Glyder is NOT Kid Icarus. Nontheless, neither the DS nor the DSi convinced me as a portable gaming device. I love playing Behind a Steel Sky, Monkey Island, Rolando 2, We Rule, etc. I plan to buy Chaos Rings, Sonic 4, Secret of Mana, GTA and Broken Sword soon - for my iPhone. And I'm having fun - without owning a DS. Get over it.
Lol! DS has a lot of hardcore games and I have no problem with being seen with my DS. Hell me and my friend Matt got sent to the office at school for playing Pokemon Heart Gold (me) and Soul Silver (him) during English 11 my previous year. I don't care what people think of me and even if I did I would still play my DS in public because quite simply the DS is BAD-ASS!
So let's exclude Nintendo, and look at third parties... Square Enix - Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts CAPCOM - Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, Resident Evil: Revelations Atlus - Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor, Persona Konami - Metal Gear Solid, Pro Evo, Contra Namco Bandai - Dragon Ball, Super Robot Taisen SEGA - Sonic Tecmo Koei - Dead or Alive 3D, Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, Ninja Gaiden Ubisoft - Assassin's Creed: Legacy, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Ghost Recon Warner Bros. - Batman, LEGO EA - FIFA, Madden, The Sims There are a few more, but these are the 'big name' developers. Note how they're all releasing games from their best franchises. If that's not impressive, you gotta have some pretty high standards, because this is what pretty much sells the system for me.
You do if you want more than about 5. You're right, Shrek Kart isn't Mario Kart, Rolando isn't Super Mario Bros, and Glyder isn't Kid Icarus, and they all share one thing in common. They're not as good as their DS counterparts. They're likely not quite as in-depth and full-fledged either. They're big for iPhone games but still miss out on the extra dev time and commitment that gets put into titles on gaming consoles, largely because AppStore success is still such a gamble.
Well... maybe you're right and I really have pretty high standards. But I rather think that on Nintendo devices the top sellers are Nintendo games in general. That doesn't mean that there aren't good third party games. And I'm happy for you if you like 'em, so please don't get me wrong: I would be happy if the 3DS would be a success, and I don't think everyone here has to share my opinion on this. But I think that Apple isn't sleeping. The iPhone 4 has a gyroscope, a great display and Game Center will be available soon. On the iPhone you can play franchises like Rock Band, Guitar Hero, GTA, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Rolando, Zenonia, The Sims, Street Fighter, Sonic, The Settlers, Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell, Final Fantasy, Modern Combat, Command & Conquer, Civilization, Need for Speed or Doom. You can be sure that not only the indie devs, but also the major devs won't let Apple down. We'll see how things turn out. What I love about my iPhone is that I can manage everything with iTunes, download games on the fly and have access to thousands of thousands of cheap games. If you look at DSiWare: http://gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=119619 ... To put it in a nutshell: I love my Wii console, but when it comes to mobile gaming devices I'll probably stick with Apple. But that's only my opinion, and maybe I change it. I hope that the 3DS will be a success, for gamers like us it can only be great if Apple, Nintendo, Sony, etc. compete with each other in a creative way.
Those series on the iPhone you note are just stripped down largely crappy mobile spinoffs. - Metal Gear Solid? That was just a prerenderd simple shooter. What is coming to the 3DS is a fully-fledged MGS game directed by the acutal creator of the series. - Resident Evil, those are just spinoffs from mobiles / ngage. For the 3DS it is a brand new mainline RE game with visuals that look to be beyond even RE4 on the GCN - Street Fighter is the same, on the 3DS it will be the updated Super Street Fighter IV with fully polygonal characters (not sprites like on iPhone) and the full gameplay intact because it has enough buttons for it (not stripped down like it is on iPhone). - Final Fantasy? Just as with the DS the 3DS is likely to be getting full remakes this time of FFV and FFVI, probably VII too and even a brand new numbered FF (Kitase isn't going want to miss out on the monies this around like he did with the DS). Just imagine, a remake of FFVI with visuals beyond PSP and in 3D - Oh and of course it doesn't need to be said that Dragon Quest XI will go to 3DS, heck I wouldn't be surprised if SE jump from Wii to 3DS with DQX - I can go on the same with much of what you note That is our point. All the major IPs are going to the 3DS and are the proper mainline / sequels by the main studios, not a stripped down spinoff by their D team. The DS was THE focus of mostly every breathing Japanese developer and it will remain true of the 3DS. Now with its spec increase even the Western devs cannot ignore any longer. It simply does not compare and surely you realise this. It's fine if you prefer to play with iPhone but you can't pretend the support for iPhone by major publishers is the same as it will be for the 3DS. This wasn't even the case with the original DS.
Well, I think most Western game developers are rather interested in iPhone development than in DS development (a study of Game Developer Research confimed that some months ago). I think it's probably because development for the iPhone is much easier and not that expensive than developing for the DS. Of course, the major labels bring all their IPs to the 3DS, because they work together with Nintendo for years. Apple is rather new in this business, so it's only natural that the major developers don't invest too much money and try to start with spinoffs, just to see how things are going. But as the new iPhone and the iPad are really powerful (and the next iPod Touch will be powerful, too), more and more big developers will produce main titles (or exclusive titles) for the iDevices, like Square Enix did with Chaos Rings. And while producing for the iPhone is less expensive as for DS (boxing, delivery, etc.), a lot of gamers just can't imagine paying 30 bucks for a game that you can get for 5 bucks in the App Store. So Nintendo needs some special features in their hardware as the new 3D stuff. Hope this helps 'em... But if you think the big developers will all jump on the 3DS and let the iDevices slide you'll probably be very surprised in the next months.
