Now we all know the iPod Touch $G (and the iPad for that matter) were given the short end of the stick when it came to RAM memory. With their A4 processors and high resolution displays it was only a matter of time before the 256MB of RAM they had onboard proved insufficient for even the most basic tasks. So here's my question; Should I upgrade my iPod Touch from iOS 5.1.1 to 6? If any iPod Touch 4G owners have iOS 6 running I'd like to know how it compares to the stability and speed of 5.1.1. Even more important is the amount of RAM the iPod has to spare running iOS 6. I use an app called XSysInfo (which doesn't seem to be listed anymore.....) that cleans the devices RAM and tells how much is available, wired, etc. If anyone is running XSystem info or a similar app I would really like to know what the maximum amount of RAM they can manage to free running iOS 6 is. For comparison using the previously mentioned app on my iPod the maximum amount of RAM I've had was a bit over 130MB, with 110-120 being the average. So guys, what should I do? RAM is the main factor here do to the iPod's tendency to run out of it and crash, but I'd like to hear about the other points (stability and speed) too.
After upgrading to iOS 6 on my iPad 3, I have roughly 100 mb less ram free that in 5.1.1 Which really is irrelevant for me, but something like that for an iPod could prove devastating.
I have IOS6 installed on my iPod 4G. I would say not to download it right now, maybe wait for 6.1. It is a bit faster, but it's very buggy and right now you're better off with 5.1.1.
iOS 6 has breathed new life into my iPhone 4. It is *much* better performing than iOS 5 was. In fact I've decided to hold off on upgrading (to iPhone 5) as a result. With iOS 5 I had to frequently manually quit out of applications to get acceptable performance (stuff like the camera would take eons to load and sometimes taking pictures wouldn't work for minutes, etc). With iOS 6 it is running smooth as butter. The only problem I've had is with the app store. A few days ago I couldn't get it to load at all, but that cleared up so that seems to have been a temporary problem. However a problem that has not gone away is that the Purchased tab does not work. It will say "loading" for a long time, and then crash to the springboard. I also get the crashing Purchased tab on my iPad 2. Hopefully 6.0.1 comes out soon and fixes that. But that's the only issue. Otherwise it has been way better for my iPhone 4. Apparently the crashing Purchased tab happens if you have a lot of apps "purchased" in your account.
Yeah my iPhone 4 also seems to have a new life with iOS 6.. Can't really say the same with iPod touch as none of my iPod touches are running recent software.. Mine are running like .. God maybe even iOS 3.. I got them in 2010 I think.. Might be time for me to buy a new iPod touch.. The long white one looks kinda cool but it's kind of pointless when an iPhone does the same thing basically.
Wow, just Wow...... I decided to take the plunge and install iOS6 on my iPod Touch 4g. I couldn't be more surprised with the results................ While I have slightly less RAM than before, the entire OS is faster, more functional and better looking than iOS 5. Apple must have goofed when they designed iOS 5, either that or it was horribly optimized for the iPod Touch. My iPod hasn't been this fast and responsive since I purchased it in the summer of 2011. I would advise anyone considering the upgrade to go ahead and take the plunge, you (hopefully) won't regret it, you'll celebrate! ALSO: When I upgraded my OS, I turned off my iPod for about 20mins to let the internals cool down and deactivate. That helps with the performance of the iPod, as it helps clear out wired RAM and allows a hot device to cool it components. I received some tips about the process from the iFans forums (I can't find the exactly topic atm) so go check them out.
would the performance and life cycle of power supply be better? and will the applications, cydia, and jailbreak things from 5.1 work on 6.0 jailbreak? because theres a new ios 6 jailbreak for it. digital access pass review dap
When I upgraded my iPod Touch, 4th gen, the extra size of the iOS ended up writing in a previously slightly buggy area of memory. I've been having memory issues for a while, but nothing provable to Apple. They claimed it was all due to buggy apps. Well iOS 6 proved them wrong, as it sent my poor little iPod Touch into a tailspin of rebooting from which it never recovered. I even managed to wrestle it back to factory specs, but as soon as iOS 6 was installed, it bricked: repeated reboot to the Apple logo then complete shutdown, no return. This process involved several trips to the Apple store and resulted in my getting a replacement 4th gen iPod Touch, which installed iOS 6 flawlessly, and has been working flawlessly ever since. My experience has been the same as LanceAvion's. Way better performance of apps than under iOS 5+, including the ability to play games that previously just crashed. A few ebooks stopped working, but complaints to the publisher has resulted in fixes for all but one of them (and they're working on it, just haven't figured out how to fix it yet). iOS 6 has breathed new life, and literally in my case, into my iPod Touch 4th gen device!
Almost opposite for me! My iPod was fine upon upgrading to iOS 6, but the memory problems just got worse from there. The AppStore is the worst, it's nearly impossible to do an app search without it crashing so I usually have to search it on google and use a direct link to the app. Most other Apple apps are slower too. Can't wait to upgrade to 5th generation... ._.
iOS 6 on my iPod is pretty much fantastic. Runs expentionally well, and there is a lot less lag. I would upgrade from 5.1.1.
iOS 6 has a severe memory leak...running iOS 5 and checking the free ram while playing games like MC3 I would have 400-500 mb RAM free, now I have less than 100 free and lower framerate. Not pleased, not pleased at all.
Yeah. iOS 6 makes playing mc3 really laggy. Now when I connect to mc3 online, it always says connection lost the first few times. I had no problems with iOS 5
iOS 6 makes older A4 devices slower. My iPod which was jailbroken on iOS 5.1 with all of these unstable packages runs faster than unjailbroken iOS 6.
