Just clicked the button and started the download I just picked the download option I'm not sure I'll install it for a few days to gauge feedback.
Figured some may be waiting for it though anxiously.

That's a bit weird I'd have thought USA would have it first I'm in the UK and it's downloading but the speeds is a bit erratic I guess a lot of people are grabbing it already.

So it's going to delete all the apps and whatnot off my iPhone, eh?

Anyway to preserve save games and whatnot I have? Been looking forward to this upgrade but it's going to suck having to not only reload and organize everything again, but also losing all my progress in everything.

Or am I wrong? It's all backed up and ready to update, will that preserve anything?

What about the rumor that iOS 5 will slow down a 3GS and has heavy battery usage (drains it faster)?

Backup your iPhone when u connect it to iTunes. Then install iOS 5. After it's done it will ask u if u wanna set it up as a new phone or restore from a backup. Choose restore from backup and it will put everything back in its place.

No slowdown here. Dunno about battery, haven't really paid attention to it.

Wait, does this really make you set your iPhone/iPad all over again, perhaps using a backup, or does it just update in place? I'm at work and all my apps and such are at home. Do I need to wait until I get home to update? I hope this is wrong, because if it really does wipe out your device and make you set it up again, that's going to take soooo long. :(

It wipes everything and makes you restore from backup:

I don't like the sound of that it took me a whole day to get my iPod back up and running after restoring it once. My original download of IOS 5 failed as well I had most of it then apples server seemed to go down or something.

Maybe I'll just forget about it for a few days and download it then.

I have iTunes at work, although it doesn't have any of my apps or music on it. These are all on my home computer. When I plug in my phone it does say it's backing up my iPhone though. Is it safe for me to update through my work computer? I really want to update at work because I get home late and like to play around on my phone if I'm sitting on the couch with nothing much to do.

Hmmm . . . this is helpful but I'm still scratching my head. I sync to this computer everyday but am not sure it applies since my apps aren't on this computer. When I click on the link to review what is stored in my backup, it takes me to an empty page. I guess I may have to do my update tonight to be on the safe side. I don't want to lose all my progress I have saved in my apps/games and also don't want to lose all my music and try to figure out which 1,900 songs out of the 3,500 on my computer made my iPhone cut (which I'm still whittling down).

I know, it's not the most helpful thing ever. Frankly I'm confused myself.

Although to be honest with you, I'd rather be safe than sorry and sync it when you get home.

My download will be finished in 8 minutes and then it'll update my 3GS to iOS5 so I might be able to shine a little more light on the update process.
