No, that's wrong. You have to multiply first. Because in BOMDAS, multiplication comes BEFORE division. None of this crap about them being "on the same level". It doesn't matter whether you multiply out the bracket or simplify, the next step will always be multiplication. "Crap like PEMDAS" just happens to be one of the FOUNDING PRINCIPLES of MATHEMATICS. You guys have ignored my alternative solving method completely, which still stands; 6÷2(1+2)=x 6÷2=x allattt3 6=x x 2 tat3 6÷6=x 1=x Thus proving the answer is ONE. 2+2 does not equal 5.
Actually this is ALMOST right. You could read it like this: 6/2 x (1+2) =6/2 x 3 =3 x 3 = 9 Parenthesis > Exponents > Multiplication = Division > Addition = Subtraction from Left to Right /thread
@Watabou & @BrettArchibald Ah I see. It is not a big deal...no need to get snarky or roll your eyes, I'm not a child, just ignorant. I truly didn't know that word was used in England.
Thanks for hopefully putting this to rest. I am glad that I grew up in a time when these acronyms were not used. I have had to deal for 20 years of my kids having to deal with "new math", and unfortunately there is nothing "new" about it. Just the same old math, being taught in a new way, which, as Wiki points out can be misleading. @the grim reaper - I'm truly glad you "got it". I guarantee there are going to be others out there that will still insist that the Wiki explanation is wrong, and that the order of the letters in the acronym sets precedence, because that is what was drilled into their heads. Acronyms are memory tools, not principles, and our current system of teaching unfortunately clouds this.. People get taught acronyms as though they ARE the rules. Now maybe we will get the word puzzle where 1 dollar gets mysteriously "lost" amongst the 3 people dividing up $30.
And at the end of the day I am still correct because this question is not defined properly for a single line question. If it was written on paper it would be clarified but here there are two questions as brackets are missing making both answers correct.
6÷2(1+2)=??? That is the original quesiton. There is nothing even remotely questionable as to how it is written. The only problem with solving exists in your mind. I have no idea how much math you understand, so assuming you have some understanding, at this point you are just being a thread troll....
LOL, so one can't do arithmetic without brackets? That's like saying one can't solve 5 - 4 - 3 = ? because it could be either (5 - 4) - 3 or 5 - (4 -3).
I got 9, too. And no one in particular 'invented' maths, as it's already been pointed out. More like it was just discovered, seeing as maths is the root of everything really. Now to do something with my life...
Whoever that guy who claimed he was Asian, knew math, and said the answer was 1 is a sad, sad disgrace. Dear Lord. This is the first time I've read through a thread in the lounge, and wow, no wonder I never come here. 5th year math? I'm pretty sure this is 3rd year math. Just saw the poll on Facebook as well. Wow. Well, to be fair, the author of the problem used the divide symbol to trick people up. If he used a backslash instead, I think less people would miss the problem. Just because the 2 is by the parenthesis, that doesn't mean you multiply first. Learn your elementary school math rule.
10 pages of replies, this is interesting... 6÷2(1+2)=??? Where did we ever find a math quiz presented like this? ...we should say, Sir, the question was wrong..
So you're one of those linear people who are only able to solve a question if it was presented in a manner that you're used to seeing?
