the input in your link site is 1+2 [Using closest Wolfram|Alpha interpretation: (1+2) ], of course the result is 3.

This site is so stupid, much more than us.:D

The hierarchy is parentheses, then multiplication / division, then addition / subtraction. However, the important hierarchy that everyone is missing is that the equation is also read from left to right, and multiplication and division have equal status, as does addition and subtraction.

Therefore the operations would be 1+2, then reading left to right, 6 ÷ 2, then multiply the 3 x 3.

C'mon folks, this is 4th or 5th grade math at best. Although the 2= 1 answer was clever.

Of course. I think probably the Egyptians or Mayans were the first to use mathematics, but the English certainly didn't invent it.

It depends on the base system anyway. With a base-seven system, which seems to be the minimal base system for this operation, it gives 12. (1x7^1 + 2x7^0).

He wasn't trying to be clever. He actually thought it was 1.

Honest mistake. Even the almighty WolframAlpha messed it up.

Some of you guys are really stupid you actually think 6/2(1+2)=9? No offense though. Have you guys ever heard of PEMDAS? (Parenthesis, Exponent, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction) 6/2(1+2)=1. Let you tell you step by step. First you solve out the equation in the parenthesis so it is now 6/2(3). Second now multiply 2 to 3 and it will equal 6 now you have 6/6. 6 divided by 6 equals 1. Trust me I'm Asian. We Asians know our math.

In PEMDAS the MD is a single step, done from left to right. Same with the AS. Multiplication does not take precedence over division, they are done in the same step, from left to right. So you started correctly by doing the parentheses first, but after you get 6/2*3 you do the 6/2 first, because it's the leftmost operation. Then you multiply that result by 3, giving you 9.

    You are awesome.

Are you an idiot? If it was 6/(2(1+2)), then it would be equal to 1. In this case, it is (6/2)*(1+2), which is 9. Type 6/2(1+2) in your calculator and see what you get.

Ye are doing two different questions so of course ye are getting different answers.

    1) 6/(2(1+2))
    2) 6/2 x (1+2)

    1) = 1
    2) = 9

and I believe the correct question being asked is number 1. In one you are dividing by 1+2 and the other you are multiplying.

I don't understand why people are getting confused. This is just basic Year 5 maths.

Totally agreed. I can't understand how a sane person would think it's anything but 9.
