Epic Games has made at least $1.6 million in 5 days from their popular Infinity Blade game for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, according to TUAW. Epic. GameIndustry (registration required) and AppModo looked at the Game Center data for Infinity Blade (our review) and found that 274,000 players had registered the game by the evening of December 12. At $5.99 a pop, that means that Infinity Blade earned at least 1.6 million dollars in five days. Not all buyers register with Game Center so these numbers are likely higher. Infinity Blade is the first mobile game powered by Epics cutting-edge Unreal Engine 3 technology. It features gorgeous visuals, adrenaline-fueled battles and advanced character progression in a fully 3D castle realm. You can purchase Infinity Blade from the App Store for $5.99. [via iclarified]
This is good news. (This post would have been a good addition to the "IB is now the fastest grossing app" thread, which already exists)
money Too be honest , thats not really that good. I hope thier sales increase to around 5-7 million by end of the year. The Advertising and promotions alone have been very high. Add to the fact of buying unreal engine and time spent to make this type of game. Plus Iam sure they had a large team just to make graphics alone. I hope they do better in sales , bringing hardcore games to the iphone/ipod marketplace.
It's probably made double that. Most people don't register with Gamecenter yet, I haven't yet. I don't know anyone personally that has either
I don't know about this...yes it may be true some people don't register with gamecenter but then, there are pirates who don't even pay for the game. Doesn't that throw the numbers off? I want Infinity Blade to be #1 again
a thread about this was started this afternoon. an epic higher-up said via twitter that their sales are higher than their gamecenter numbers indicate.
Like Hodapp said, that tweet is worthless without proof. If I was a developer of a big game doing well in the charts currently, I would undoubtedly claim the same.
Still, if we take the numbers sold as 275,000 for $5.99 each, that makes $1,647,250. Oh and don't forget Apple takes 30%. So in reality, they made 1,153,075 give or take a couple thousands, unless my math is wrong somewhere... Ofcourse, they will probably make more come Christmas time.
Probably much higher a lot of people like me want nothing to do with Game Centre and would even remove it if they could it was a bit pointless before and more of a nag than anything but now it uses real names no thanks. Infinity Blade in hindsight I wouldn't have bought it and I won't be buying another unless it's actually large enough to call a game so I wouldn't count on them pulling it off a second time.
who cares about pirates.. they would not have bought the game anyway.. at the end the numbers are pretty good imho.. for a non casual game at an above average pricetag i think they sold great. and the huge flush of new devices are going to roll in after xmas.. now id like to know their production cost which won't be near the number they earned. for a team well known in creating "modern" 3d art such a game can be easly be done by a very small team within a couple month. what i don't understand is why there should be big pr costs? i personaly havent see a single add for infiniti .. pretty much all pr they got was for free since they got covered pretty much everywhere and even appeared in apples ads..
Not too bad, Epic does deserve the money, although of course their game does get kinda repetitive at the moment. But i´m looking forward at things to come, a free online mode for example would justify the price point for me. I´d also love to explore more of the world. No, it does not. It only uses your name if you want to add a friend, but you can easily edit that invitation message.
Why? I don't think he has any reason to lie. If piracy had that much of an effect on sales I'm sure he would've tweeted about that instead of discussing the games success.
Understand that, for Epic, these profits mean nothing. In the grand scheme of things, they could have pulled that much out from underneath their proverbial couch cushions.
How much money has Call of Duty Black Ops made? Not every console developer can make that much money, granted, but every console developer still dreams someday of making that much money. Epic does own the Gears of War franchise, which has the potential if utilized properly to print money like nobody's business. It's encouraging that IB didn't outright flop, but these numbers aren't that big of a deal. Really, they're not. Its a lot of money "in appstore terms," but you have to understand that Epic is not an Appstore developer/publisher, an iDevice developer, or a mobile gaming developer. Epic is a console developer. They don't think of profits in terms of the small picture. They think of profits in terms of the big picture. They are looking to sell 3-5 million copies of a console game retailing at 59.99 a piece. This here is small patatoes to Epic. Real small patatoes.
Question: If you pirate a game, can you register with Gamecenter? You guys also have to remember that Apple takes 30 percent, and they have to pay taxes on it, but nonetheless, its alot of dough in 4 days. Heh, in the time it took me to become a Level 30 on Infinity's Blade, they made around a million dollars.
