Screens could be bullshots (that's one dev practice we don't need from console games). Even though, that's highly impressive.

My dreams for a Mass Effect 2 or MGS type game on the iDevice could come true by late next year. :)

GoW is a third-person shooter, no different to the FPS mechanics the engine is primarily designed around. Anyway, the engine has always shown a lacking when it comes to action titles, specifically those that run at a high framerate / rely on a rock solid one.

For action games that have as many multi-faceted mechanics that completely depend on frames (like Monster Hunter), I'd very much prefer an engine built specifically for its purposes, just like with other action games whether it be the NG titles or DMC titles (which is why DmC being on UE3 is such horrible news).

Seems like the two of you have differing definitions of "action games".

Squarezero is using the old school definition of "anything with tons of action and fighting" is an action game (Contra and Megaman were called action games back in the day, for example). GDSage on the other hand is talking about 3rd person brawlers (Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, God of War and Lords of Shadow).

The Unreal Engine works fine for shooters (Gears, Mass Effect 2) etc. Only FPS game that has fans touting its fps is Call of Duty Modern Warfare. However the great brawlers from the last 10 years have their fighting combo systems based around fighting games, where 60 fps and animation transitions is highly favoured to intensify the flow of the game. The Unreal Engine has (so far) been proven to be deficient with this respect.

Point is you're both right, and are disagreeing due to semantics. :)

Why do you even bother to post on this forum if you think there are no "real" games on the App Store?
You're ignorance has left me speechless.

Well, actually, I refer to everything from Contra to Monster Hunter as action titles because on a fundamental level they share the exact same principles, notably in pattern-based mechanics / designs. The likes of Gears of War are little different to FPS titles, outside of the perspective.

Stop fighting! It is spam! Back on topic please. I believe the price range for this game can be anywhere from 6.99 to 16.99

Yeah, because speculating about the price of the game adds so much to the topic.

I don't know why there are so many armchair accountants saying that x game would sell y amount more if it cost z dollars.

Obviously a studio as big as Epic is going to do market research to determine what would yield maximum profits. The whole "you're going to make more by selling it for less" arguement is moot.

What's more, the ease of changing App Store prices means there isn't a MSRP that is kind of set in stone. I do hope a company like Epic doesn't resort to constant 99 cents price sales to drive demand before reverting to full price because it really devalues the image of the game even if I wouldn't mind picking it up on sale.

Bleh... This point sounds more like "I don't know how games are made or why they can have low framerates" than an actual discussion on what kinds of games can be made with a high-end game engine.

UE3 is a robust and flexible engine that doesn't only have to be used for FPSes. Undertow and Shadow Complex are prime examples of UE3 doing it's work at a high framerate in a game system that is not limited to the quid pro quo of the engine it was developed in. Since Chair was in charge of both of those projects, I can only assume that they would be the authority on getting UE3 to work well enough and at a high enough framerate for a project on iOS. Both of these games fit easily within the definition of an action game that anyone has brought up.

For fighting games, you can take a lot of shortcuts to make the game work properly. I think I read somewhere that Street Fighter 4 intentionally drops frames from their animations so that the special moves flow and end properly visually and don't interrupt the flow of gameplay.

The fact of the matter is that anyone can make any game run at a decent framerate, it just depends what features of your game you are willing to disable or otherwise neuter. In UE3, for example, you could turn off the lighting and get a huge performance increase. However, I think gamers wouldn't be very interested in buying a game that doesn't have any lighting system.

Epic could charge a testicle for this game. If it's good... well, I only really need one.

And people - I may not have been around in this forum for long, but does the entire concept of "STAY ON TOPIC" mean nothing?

    STAY ON TOPIC.

Take your price debates on app store policies and how it affects the big picture somewhere else. Specifically somewhere other than this thread. Sheesh.

    BACK on topic...

I hope that this turns out to be more dynamic in its visuals than what I fear it could turn into (basically Myst, which looked GORGEOUS, but was only pre-rendered visuals with limited to no interactivity)

I know it's not possible to have hugely desctructive environments, but if it's just as though we're walking on a movie set built on a green screen, that's going to kill more of the atmosphere than having a game with slightly lower quality graphics...

Mmm... borderlands style cell shading in a game like this....?

No. Anyway. This game can't come soon enough.

There is a gap between $ 0,99 and $ 20. The good solution isn't to say "0,99 is a stupid price for this kind of game, you must charge for 20", because, it isn't sure to make more by selling it for less BUT it is sure to make LESS by selling it at a very high price ( $20 is a high price for a game to download).
    My 2 cents...

Well, it's highly likely that you'll be seeing this game priced at $10 or above across all the ios devices.

"However, he did seem to hint that it will be more expensive than your average $1.99 minigame. I asked him if he thought there was a market for higher-priced, premium titles on the iPhone, and he quickly answered with examples of games that had done what Epic seems to want to do. "There have been some pretty fantastic successes -- Call of Duty did extremely well; it's a $10 title on the iPad. GTA. There's lots of big brand, high quality titles that have done well. The Brits have a saying, 'Horses for Courses,' and that doesn't mean people won't make Angry Birds -- and there's a new one called Cut the Rope, which is fantastic."

I also remember a previous interview but am having trouble finding it where, they mention wanting to break the AppStore pricing barrier.

    I'll keep looking.

Get real and don't expect a top tier title will be 1-3 bucks. Quit being a cheapskate.

If anyone can demand a higher price point, it's Epic. Their games are competing on an entirely different level. I'm thinking we're going to have to compare games like Infinity Blade to real console games, not 99¢*crapware.

Hopefully App Store gamers get that, but I somehow doubt it.
