I know the "tricked" message can be related to an inability to save the game / write to disk. But I don't know why it would be happening (unless you are out of space.. Unlikely). Does deleting the game/reinstalling help?
I haven't seen that one before. What device/iOS version are you on? Also will the game run if you exit and try again? Looks like there are some instances where it's having trouble writing to disk.
iPhone 6+ iOS 8.1.2 jailbroked and plenty of storage space left. Tried deleting and tried again but no better
Looks nice, I played Nethack a good 15 years ago, but I prefer the slightly modern approach of WazHack. Same rules pretty much: You can do whatever you want except there is no deity you can pi$$ off.
Yeah it seems natural to me too. I just change the first shortcut "." to "s", "20." to "^d" (kick) and "e" to "Z" (Cast) I manage all the other one letter commands from the "abc" button. Smoother than the keyboard.
Never played one of these before, but I've always been curious. I can see myself putting some time into this game. Right now I'm just learning how to play though. I was wondering, how do you change your character's name? It always says my name is Mobile User and I would like to change that. Thanks!
Yes definitely check out the settings area which is located in the main Settings for the iphone/iPad where it lists all your apps. You can change the tileset there (DawnHack is the JRPG-looking one). Also good to set your name (first setting) and adjust or disable Autopickup. I like to just turn off Autopickup altogether as it becomes a pain in shops and ghost's cursed items. Also check out Hearse. Create a username there and the next time you play it will connect to the hearse bones sharing site, meaning you will randomly upload/download save files of levels you and others have died on (aka bones files).
i can't fully understand how the shortcut bar works!!! how can i change commands, add new keys, and use the keyboard?
Hit the "abc" button to bring up keyboard. Tap and hold for a second on a shortcut button to customize it. Hope that helps!
I've just realised the movement directions are mapped to the areas of the entire screen. I can control it a lot more comfortably knowing that now! Howver the double tap thing is really annoying. Would be great to have an option to disable it altogether. The sensitivity slider in the settings doesn't help much (it's at min by default anyway)
I'm a couple-decade nethack player/fan, never once won the game but keep coming back for more abuse. Just downloaded this. I see that there are a few tile sets compiled into it but I can't figure out how to change to the one I want. How do you do that? Edited to add.... Never mind, I'm just dumb. Always forget that the place to change settings on an iPad is in... Settings!
Does a terrific job of replicating the painfully ancient ui of he original. Which is great if your someone who digs that sort of thing. Otherwise, anyone else who doesn't understand this archaic appeal, is in for frustration. On the other hand, it is the quenticential roguelike, and a great reference for anyone who is confused about what a roguelike truly is.
Is it possible to somehow modernize the UI? I'm getting used to it myself, but as mentioned before, it could turn other new players away.
I've always thought Brogue did an amazing job of simplifying the roguelike control scheme. Quaff, read, zap, and apply? All 'A' for apply. Wear, wield, put on, take off, remove? All 'E' for equip. That said, not only is this by far the most accessible version of NetHack that I've played, but I also think the obtuse controls and visual style are part of the interactive experience of the game. The game should make the player feel alienated, unsure, confused, hopeless in the sense that it's the way his/her character feels. Different stimulus, but same type of emotional response. Talk about immersion!

Please consider adding an option for a dark keyboard (Apple's built in one), it would make the experience a bit better, especially for ASCII players
