I can honestly say this was the most genuinely scary experience I've had in iOS gaming, I'll try to highlight some of my thoughts without ruining or discussing anything too specific because Indigo Lake is best experienced first hand. The atmosphere on display in the app is rich and immersive with rainfall and leaves slow falling everywhere (also giving a good sense of peripheral motion engendering uncertainty and paranoia). The sound design is really great. Some of the ghastly effects are deliciously subtle it's entirely possible to miss (without spoiling it there is an element where it almost feels like something mysterious taps you on the shoulder occasionally). I don't want to ruin anything but there are some crazy “WTF!” moments that unsettled me. The horror is downright scary but sometimes campy striking me in a wonderful black comedy manner while still retaining some horribly eerie characteristics. Sometimes haunts are subtle but other times the game focuses you into some time pressure situations or makes you look at things that highlight the specters effectively. The controls are traditional first person shooter (left thumb to look/steer and right thumb to move with tap on perimeter to fire). It's a beautiful game that might be worth the price just to stomp around and check out the environment, Indigo Lake has a great sandbox feel that allows open world exploration. It is a lot of fun just roaming around and finding surprises, there's still cryptic bits that I don't fully understand (for me, odd pillars). With the slow open world pace and unlimited ammo Indigo Lake is much more like a first person adventure game that rewards exploration and puzzle solving (but at times is frantic requiring quick action). One minor quirk was the lack of a reload option, fire shots until the chamber empties then tap to auto-reload (but no reloading partial clips, ammo is unlimited). The adventure game style puzzles were challenging and Indigo Lake does not under estimate the intelligence of it's audience, something I appreciated. Even when stuck by puzzles it often felt like there were threads to follow. Being able to drive a car is a nice touch but I preferred to walk because the game is so detailed and spooky. The car can go up to 30mph and help you zip around, it seemed fun to me but more as a mini-game than a necessary feature.. your play style may vary. Some of Indigo Lake requires you to trend back and forth over the campground area and can feel fetch quest like but without spoiling I can say the “level” design is unique allowing for easy backtracking if necessary (and streamlined with a vehicle). The developers put in a lot of polished touches. The ability to video record your own games within the app is unprecedented. The menu design is nice requiring you to turn your iDevice to access settings or review objectives (this reduces virtual buttons and allows more atmospheric interface focused on game environment). There is a Google glasses tech element where prompts are displayed from a third party onto the world through your headgear that is intelligent and helps guide you early on while “in character.” Indigo Lake was a lot of fun, it does world exploration and especially chilling fright effectively so is easy to recommend. You won't want to miss Indigo Lake. If you've followed the upcoming games thread, the developers gave ingenious explanations of optimizing graphics and sound while keeping the game size lower. For example, sound design is a real highlight but based on lower size MIDI sets. There is "real" lighting/shadows (versus just pre-rendered shading drawn on textures). I never got the impression they cut corners and the graphics/sound were top notch. master lee Well-Known Member Jun 19, 2009 1,029 0 0 Greece kos island #8 master lee, Oct 16, 2013 INSTA buy tonight! awp69 Well-Known Member Oct 30, 2009 8,249 0 36 Greenville, SC #9 awp69, Oct 16, 2013 Too long to quote but mega thanks to undeadcow for his detailed impressions. First iOS game that actually puts a bit of fear in me for real. The game's atmosphere is pretty intense. Good sound effects accompany it, although at first i though the car ride needs more sound effects like screeching on sand, or something like that. But, once i got out of the car, I forget about this minor flaw coz the rest of the game really sets the mood. The sounds, the visuals, the blurs, the weather effects, the random leaves, everything. The tilt to access menus or objectives is a brilliant choice, IMO, as it removes unnecessary clutter on the game screen, which significantly helps in keeping the game's atmosphere solid. One thing i'd like to comment on is, if possible, remove the tap-to shoot on the left side of the screen. Also, when you have your right thumb touching the screen, the movement has an added inertia, which doesnt seem necessary in my opinion. Everything else in the game is so well done. Im also really impressed that this game is less than 150mb installed, and this much mood and tone incorporated in it. This is easily one of the best $2 purchases EVER. I still have to play my other purchases, but this looks like a strong GotW candidate already.
