so that means for places that hasn't gotten the game in their respective app stores, can pretty much expect that they wont be getting it.

    right...

Thank you very very very much for replying question regarding to this. Although this problem might not resolve any time soon, you and your company has made some of the most amazing games that I have played since the first Wolfenstein 3d when I was still in high school in US, I will still be looking forward to Rage on PC next year.

    Really appreciated.

    Thanks.

Getting the obvious ones out of the way, more levels would be nice of course. With Game Center coming, I really hope a nice amount of achievements are present as well. You can even add more depth to the game by making the in-game currency (bash bucks was it?) spendable to buy new weapons or even perks if possible.

It would be nice if mutants spawned randomly but I'm not sure if it's possible for an on-rails game. Speaking of which, a few huge boss fights would be epic! As for combat, a melee attack may be helpful for closeup attacks. Finally, I would love this game to have some form of multiplayer. Perhaps have 2 players try to kill as many mutants as possible and see who has the higher score?

Overall though, a lot of quality for a 99cents game, one I would definitely recommend to others.

That doesn't make sense to me. Why would that be a concern, especially for Id Software when hundreds of thousands of other devs, large and small, don't have any issues with it.

AFAIK the only reason there have been apps not released in NZ is for licensing reasons (such as EA's board games) and services that aren't available here (such as pandora, Last FM, Spotify, Netflix).

This is strange, there are so many big games available worldwide, why this is a issue you can't fix now?

I can't wait to buy it..

He just explained it, did either of you bother reading the response? The publisher Zenimax doesn't feel like dealing with the extra paperwork of filing local taxes in certain regions so they opted to stick with the regions they could just push the app to without the TPS reports.

this game is great on rails once ive gotten used to it (gyroscope would be the icing on the cake), hope more episodes/seasons are coming but sounds like they have their hands full.

cant wait for future titles with this quality, a more controllable series that looks like this i definately would and sure plenty others would be more than happy to download 2GB plus and spend more on a console quality game that looks this good

First of all and for the sake of this thread, could we stop talking about free movements and so on ?
It's a classical arcade rail shooter, deal with it, some of the best games in video game history are, it's not a disease and it's incredibly fun as long as you follow the game spirit (scoring, one life challenge etc...)

Now there is something confusing me: in the 1st game's thread I read a message from a modo saying Mr Carmack told him that, apart from possible tunings and enhancement, the game was a full feature and that no more levels could possibly be added because of the size and so on.
Mr Carmack spoke in the 1st post here about future levels: what is to be expected then?

I will so divide my post in 2 :

Things that can be added without major sized updates (resume and new thoughts)

    - Moving the pause button

    - Online Leaderboard

    - Control tuning
It seems a general demand though I love it myself.
By the way, did everybody properly understand that in the 1st method (tilting) you can also use your left thumb to aim, making it a very good method (tilting for fast and large movements thumb aiming for precise surgery ^^) ?

    - Reverse level/different path mechanic
If this is the direction pleeeeeeease add some novelty (different paths, enemies behaving completely different, new skins why not etc)

    - Challenges
Like in Doom Res. not too hard to implement I suppose (kill 30 mutants in 50 secs, clear a stage using only the pistol etc)

    - Twisting the score system
Keeping the combo bar full up to 50 mutants double the score, triple at 100 and so on for instance

    - Special events
You could keep only 3 levels but let s say every month add some special conditions and rules, like they did for left4dead 2 for instance.

    - A shop for those dollars gained in blood
If not for new weapons, let's say new skins, artworks, whatever )

Things that can be added with major size updates

    - One or Two more levels

    - A level using moving vehicles (train, buggy etc...)

    - New ennemies

    - Bosses
Obviously a general demand, we want it !!

    - More Weapons
Melee or not melee by the way

I hope this ll help somehow, pleeeeeease don't let this game die it could become so great (it is already incredibly good)

    Bon courage )

Its a simple analysis of cost of doing business versus profitability. That is why some companies don't set up shops or sell products to certain regions that may have wonky tax codes or other paperwork required. It really can take more effort than you may think to properly get everything in line to do business in some areas when you take into consideration lawyer costs and other employee fees. And we're talking about regions that no other Zenimax (or id products) may perhaps even be sold in to begin with - they're especially not going to spend money just to sell a few $.99 apps.

What John said above is that he wished that Apple would simply handle all of the required tax laws with these types of sales regions on behalf of Apple and all App developers instead of each individual developer (which there are probably hundreds or even thousands of). It presumably would be to Apple's benefit as they take a 30% cut on any apps sold, so adding up all of the apps sold to some region perhaps would make it profitable and worth Apple's time and money to handle the messed up sales or tax laws with the regions instead of leaving it all up to the individual developers, but perhaps Apple has its own reasons for not doing this (such as then having to take responsibility for every little thing each developer does in their app? Who knows).

    Make more sense now?

Why is not Rage released in Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, India, Hong Kong, and Taiwan?

I've posted already with some suggestions but figured I'd post again. The more I play through RAGE I've realized how essential it is for there to be achievements, leaderboards, and stats. With only three levels, there isn't much motivation to keep playing other than beating my high score which does eventually get old. Adding leaderboards will definitely add to this, especially if done through Game Center so that you can stack yourself up against friends. Achievements will also add to replayability, motivating the player to do things like play through the entire level using only a pistol, or without picking up any health packs, or without taking any damage, etc. Statistics at the end of each level would be nice as well, as the player could see things like accuracy, headshots, % of bullseyes hit, % of items picked up, etc. I know you have said that Game Center will likely be included in the first update but these are some more detailed things to think about. And as I mentioned before, gyroscope support would be great (which it looks like you're going to do) and moving the pause button to another location on the screen would be nice as I've accidentally paused a number of times while using the touch controls. For that matter, the ability to customize where all of the on screen control icons are located would be great, allowing the player to put the buttons exactly where they'd like them. Modern Combat 2 does a good job in that area.

Another thing I would like to see is randomization of pickups. With health packs, ammo packs, and cash always in the same place on levels it becomes very easy to memorize where everything is, making it less challenging once you've played through a few times. If they were in different places each time then it would pose more of a challenge.

And finally, I do think that file size is an issue. With more and more games pushing the limits of what the iPhone is capable of, file sizes are getting much larger, and RAGE HD is certainly no exception. While 700mb is certainly on the hefty side, it is comparable to some of the other top tier games available on the App store, but with one major difference: it only has three levels. I can't imagine how big it would be if you added another level to the game or if you plan on making games in the future with more content than just 3 levels of 10 minute gameplay. I have a 32 gb iPhone 4 and I had to delete a few apps and photos to get RAGE HD on it (granted, I have a lot of games and it was certainly worth it to clear the space for RAGE). With there being no streamlined way to back up game saves and data, having to delete apps can start to become an issue if the user doesn't want to lose his saved game files and other app data. This isn't really an Id problem, but an overarching problem in the app store as a whole that really should be addressed by Apple since the iPhone/iPod Touch have really started to become potent gaming machines. And if Apple won't address it, then it's up to devs to start. Firemint has this capability with Real Racing, as players can sync their game data to an online server. I'd love to see Id do something similar, even if it is to simply help create a spark that leads to other big name devs doing it as well. If all of my game saves were backed up, I would have no problem deleting a lot of the games that I haven't played in a while since I would know that at any time I could put them back on my device and still have my saved games and data. If someone has a device that has hardly any free space, file size could end up being a deciding factor as to if they will purchase the game or not, whereas if they could freely delete and reinstall apps without losing game data, file size wouldn't even matter.

From what I have gathered, this game is "on rails" and has a tendency to take over your view (re-centering it at times, for example) is probably due to a couple of reasons:

    1) To run as fast as it does and to look as good as it does the game engine has to seemingly take more control over your view than a "free roaming" game would - for example, John already mentioned that the engine does a lot of model cleanup (i.e. removing the dead muties) and I'm guessing does other things with the rendering engine that may make a quick change in view (such as a quick 180 degree camera change) difficult for the engine to handle. Not that I'm trying to diminish what id (and John) have done with this game but that may be part of the technical reasoning.

    2) id wanted a fast-paced game with the only control requirements being aiming and not having to worry about movement through the environment in addition.

Several people in these forums have excellent ideas and I'd like to repeat a few of them and expand upon others:

-I would like a moment sometimes to reload a weapon before being forced into the next area - many times I feel like I'm getting a bit too "pushed" into continuing. Even old-school rail shooters would give you the annoying blinky light to continue for a few seconds before forcing you to continue on. But I can understand if that's not intended as part of the design (keeping the player on their toes)...

-Gyroscope control over aiming. I have gotten used to the aiming in Gameloft's "Modern Combat 2" and it has almost spoiled me versus games that don't have that aiming option. Reminds me of the difficulty I had when I forced myself to switch to "mouse view" for first person shooters when I started playing Quake - there was s definite learning curve but once learned the additional accuracy was quite amazing.

-Some element of randomness as an option. I would think that perhaps could be somewhat easily added. Just change the areas where you're ambushed by 2 mutants to a chance of it being 1 or even 3, but the actual amount of mutants encountered could still be kept mostly the same (but it would be even better for the exact amount to be different). This way you can do normal run throughs or speedruns like usual but you also have the option of getting surprised.

-Using money to buy things. Silencers to weapons, quick reload, larger sized clips, more powerful ammunition, scopes ( :D ), laser sights, armor... the list could go on and on even without adding additional weapons or additional game models.

-Unlocking items (at no cost) once reaching certain money amounts. John - that could be a good way of sneaking additional RAGE content to us in the form of exclusive iOS RAGE screenshots, arts, quick developer interviews, etc. ;)

-Bosses - and adding the option of randomizing where they appear in the level so they aren't always at the end of the level.

-Maybe when you die instead of just going to the last checkpoint you can spend money you've earned so far to continue playing?

Although I too would have liked to see a free roaming game I understand the design decisions and am very glad to see such an interest in iOS gaming from id software - I'm hoping that this latest foray/experiment of theirs into iOS gaming will eventually lead to a deeper game - perhaps even developed specifically as an "iOS exclusive". I know there is no way iDevices can compete with modern PCs or consoles, but I'm happy seeing high quality games released for iOS and all of the attention it has been getting lately.

And John? (If you've actually read this far) I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks id could create the most kick-ass multiplayer FPS game on iOS if they really wanted ... Thanks for the games and the attention you're giving to this market and these forums.

I read somewhere that someone suggested a sword / katana mode. That would be a blast to play if the controls are done right. You'll have to do a gesture to swing the sword?

I also feel that weapon selection should be done with gestures (ex: swipe left for shotgun, right for rifle, etc) at least for Tilt controls. That or let us have buttons for quicker access.

Maybe a company could create a game save backup service consisting of a group of servers that can store user's game saves and it would be paid for by the game developers who want to be able to use the service and/or by individual users who pay to use the service. If the service is inexpensive enough to users and if there are enough incentives to developers to get on board it sounds like a potentially profitable business opportunity... until Apple decides to start adding that capability to Gamecenter...

    @cilo
No worries. I was just trying to put a different perspective on the issue and clarify it for anyone who may not understand it. I still don't really get it myself but I just barely have the faintest grasp of international law myself...

He was explaining what the publisher Zenimax wanted to do with releasing Rage, not what Apple's policies were with regional taxes.

So Lets Not Create Any Jobs. Lets Not Outsource This Either?

I'm sorry but most of the country's supposedly not worth the trouble never went through any recession to begin with - No Soft Loans. None of that jazz.

Which is to say - Purchasing power is intact.

Oh-well I guess I'll be clicking on buy in iTunes for Lord of the Rings (the new tower defense game - perhaps HD); Star Wars Falcon Gunner (? - was not going to get this but I figure - wht the heck); In-Game Platinum purchase for my Pocket Legends account (Pocket Legends Rulz 4ever).

Oh and if it isn't too much of an issue to raise with the senior management over at id. I guess I'll be a week away from the release of Infinity Sword (blade?) - the old unreal engine game. At which point - no hype here. I can hold my breath and spend on that. So yeah I can wait a week. Then I can wait two more.

You guys have fun killing those mutants now and don't forget to shoot a couple for me and all the rest of us to whom the game is as-of-yet unavailable for download. Japan, NZ, Mexico, India, . . . Timbuktu!?!

p.s. - got nothing against a shooter on rails.
p.s.s. - as capable of appreciating the good work as anybody else is.
