Did anyone asked for àla "House of the Dead" controls? You touch, you shoot. Forced camera wouldn't be an issue, and people could focus on aiming precisely and getting as fast as possible to touch objects while the camera's moving.
I found a bug while playing RAGE HD on my iPad. In Level 2, there's an area where you're coming towards some stairs and there's a mutie facing away on the top of said stairs. I fired my shotgun and seemingly killed the mutant. Then the screen kind of flickered, and then upon reaching the bottom of the stairs for the "stop" while the "dead" mutant turned, he suddenly popped back to life, and then froze, while his buddy beside him popped out of cover and got mowed down. The frozen mutant then just stayed there. I emptied all my weapons in him without much success. Blood, but no success. in desperation I tried to turn around and lost sight of the frozen mutant. When the screen turned back to the place of the mutant, he was gone, and the game was more or less "de-railed (ha ha)". My character just stood there and couldn't do anything but look around and shoot into the air. So yeah.. bug.
Data collected I made another pass over all the messages, thanks for the suggestions. The 1.01 version was submitted last week, and should be hitting the app store any day now. That does not have any new features, it only fixes the english language required bug and the 3.1 crashing on start bug. Don't bother downloading this unless you haven't been able to play the game because of this. We are aiming to submit the real 1.1 version on December 10. The team is still implementing a few things, and it has to go through the full QA process, but it should make a lot of people happy. It is pretty remarkable how well the mirror level mode works, it really feels like three new levels. John Carmack
Rage HD on HDTV is done well My first post on this forum. I tried the video out from my iPad to an HDTV and it worked well. The iPad screen remains black, but the shoot and duck buttons can be hit by guess or by golly. The quality of the game play is very good, no slow downs, but there is some time required to get back to normal iPad function. The iPad to vga connector did not work. I don't have an RGB connector set. Any comments?
I always make a point of taking the time to write up a pretty detailed, fully independent review of the App Store's best and worst games. For the man on the street, from the man on the street. And for the very first time, I'm moved to yell out a pretty crude adjective, Tourettes style: WOWSER! Yes sir, there's jolly good reason why John Carmack is the single most known developer - by name - by the gaming layman. And the über-talented, creative genius is yet again dominating our forums, our conversations, and our gaming time. To be perfectly frank, I really don't care what the pro reviewers at the likes of Pocket Gamer, Slide to Play and Touch Arcade say, I'm telling you straight that Rage HD is thee outstanding graphical and old-skool arcade tour-de-force on the App Store today. And It's a must-have full-time tenant for your iDevice too. But best of all, by the sounds of it JC intends to improve his iOS masterpiece further still by way of up and coming updates, which will hopefully add the features that your average gamer is crying out for. And if you're reading John, here's my shopping list of Rage requests: GAME CENTRE integration. When all is said and done, Rage is a high-score arcade shoot-em-up and GC is a must for ultimate top-score comparison (and bragging) Introduction of GYROSCOPE into tilt control option for 4th gen devices. This would be very welcome and will provide much needed additional precision for those mutant head shots! MORE LEVELS! Re-running the existing three levels in reverse would be a great way to double the playable levels to a fairly respectable six. Three just doesn't quite cut it. Sorry NEW WEAPONS. After a few back-to-back games, the existing three firearms can quickly become a little same-old, same-old. Personally, I'd love to see dual-wealding sub-machine guns and a proper old skool bank robbers sawn-off shotgun I'd love some kind of MELEE weapon(s) too. This would be great for close mutant encounters, particularly when reloading your firearm. I reckon something corse like a hammer or perhaps a butchers clever would do the job very nicely too! How about the opportunity to PAUSE FORWARD MOTION so we can give our intrepid contestant the chance to take a closer look-see at the various nooks & crannies and grab more booty? Now this may come across a tad excessive, but a little MORE GORE wouldn't go a miss either. Something like App Store favourite Call of Duty: Zombies, where headshots can actually decapitate their victims and having the chance to relieve our mutant buddies of a limb or two with a choice shot to the knee caps or shoulder would also be a great addition Finally, I'd ask JC if some kind of MULTIPLAYER mode is a possibility for the future? If so, imagine how great it'd be to go head-to-head or even co-op with a fellow Mutant Bash TV contestant At a count of seven or eight, I'm the first to admit that my mutant bashing wish-list is pretty lengthy, but could you imagine it? This would comfortably be the most sorted shooter on the entire App Store by a country mile. Yep, the already awesome Rage HD, just even more so. And then some. Damn, I'm drooling again. Finally I'd like to address the issue of the oft-mentioned, obsessively criticised on-rails hot potato. This is the method by which our hero roams the putrid, mutant infested 'houses of darkness'. Now as a big fan of critically acclaimed iOS titles such as Modern Combat 2 Black Pegasus and the aforementioned Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies, I too was hoping for a free roaming Rage/Mutant Bash TV. But it isn't. And it ain't gonna be either, so if a stuck in his ways, self confessed on-rails-phobic like me can not only get used to it, but have a bloody ball (pardon the pun) while on rails then anyone can. Period. Carmack has stated in no uncertain terms, that Rage for the iPhone just won't work on the platform, and that's good enough for me. Let's get OFF our high horses and get BEHIND this staggering, graphically astounding, groundbreaking, arcade shoot-em-up masterpiece. Here's looking forward to the update(s). Mr Carmack, you've made one helluva game. Thanks!
Improvements are good. But above anything, make Rage available in Japan. And old titles such as Wolfenstein and Doom Resurrection which used to be sold here, are now pulled out without reason so we can't receive support any more. That is also a big problem. I've heard John Carmack hates Japanese game industry since he asked Nintendo's permission for making Super Mario 3 PC version but rejected. If that is the reason for not releasing in Japan, I have to say he is too childish.
Just make Rage a dual-stick free-move game and I'm sold. On rails... not so much. I dont think that'll happen though.
why not like DOOM RESURRECTION? howdy everybody, this is in hopes that John Carmack or his associates are still about taking suggestions. my biggest one: - WHY NOT MAKE THE CONTROLS LIKE DOOM RESURRECTION? i got extremely frustrated with rage's controls, whether swiping or tilt, but i had the curious feeling that DOOM RESURRECTION was in no way this bad. i remember DR playing really well. so i actually re-installed DR to see and i was totally right. basically, that game did everything right where this game got everything wrong.... and it's so glaring that i really have to wonder why they didn't just take that control scheme? cuz it COULDN'T have been that they thought this one was better in a head to head. what i mean: 1. in DR, pause button is at the top. lol... in rage, accidentally hitting that freakin' pause button has bitten me in the a$$ so many times i can't even count. evidently, many others have encountered this too. 2. an on rails game is basically a LIGHT GUN GAME. and DR recognized this and allowed you to have a FREE FLOATING RETICLE that is not cemented at the center of the screen. the wisdom of this is that in an on rails game, the camera is controlled by the GAME... NOT YOU. and there are indeed MANY times in rage where you are ACTIVELY FIGHTING THE CAMERA, trying to train your reticle on either a loot pick up or an enemy coming in from the side. it literally feels like a tug of war and this should not be. the game is responsible for aiming the camera fairly and entertainingly. but then give me a free floating reticle so i can shoot freely without feeling like i'm in a tug of war with the game. 3. DR lets you just touch the loot pickups with your finger and especially when the camera is moving so quickly, combined with the reticle/camera marriage, it really is unfairly difficult in getting the pickups. 4. why isn't it just called the dodge button? i thought it was some weird thing that made you progress down the rails faster. it took an accidental hit for me to realize this is a dodge button ala DR. the button icon and the description in the tutorial is confusing. JUST CALL IT 'DODGE'. the graphics and performance of rage is really impressive but in terms of UI, it is a huuuuuuuuuge backwards leap from DR and i really am wondering how this happened. if nothing else, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give us a free floating reticle ala DR and just make sure the camera scripting is FAIR. right now, there are a few instances where you literally have to fight the camera scripting to aim at a guy coming up on your left and that's something that makes you angry as a gamer. also, any revelations on why the departure from DR in controls would sate my curiousity. jin
Don't make me wrestle with the camera The game is fun. You have got your groove on, you are hitting the bulls-eyes and efficiently taking care of the baddies. Your multiplier is going up and you are reaping in huge dollars. This all feels good. Which is why it is amazingly frustrating when you miss a guy and need to spend a bit of extra time mopping him up, but the camera wants to move on like some pushy, impatient real estate agent trying to rush you through the premises. I don't want to have to fight the camera to play the game. It completely kills your flow, and makes you feel like the UI and controls are against you as well as the monsters. I realise it is an on rails shooter, and you have to do things at certain times - for instance you might miss a bull-seye opportunity if you aren't quick enough, and thats fine. But don't rip control away from me when I am trying to take care of business, because you want me to look at some monster or scripted event. And once I have looked at the damn crate or point of interest, don't keep pulling me back to look at it when I am continually having to wrestle the camera back to THAT DAMN MUTANT WHO IS CHEWING MY FACE OFF. Oh, and if you are going to do voice samples with reverb on them (the announcer's voice), wait until the reverb has died away before you cut the end of the sample. Other than that, I had a blast.
My only suggestion is to make a version that's playable on a 1st gen device. I purchased the standard def version, but soon realized that it didn't work on my old hardware. The note on the app store page about 3.2 looked like it was referring to the HD version.
