Improving iOS Rage

    Woah - Der-Kleine - your sig. say's your a beta tester for a bunch of games there - didnt read them all but I did notice Aaralon. No-Wayyy. . .

    Any idea on when we can expect that on the old app-store? And can you say if India, NZ, Japan, and Mexico (among other countries) will be able to purchase said app. Cause we cant buy Rage. IDK they think we aint worth the trouble or something.

    If you can't give out info i understand that - confidentiality and all tht. Oh-well this is about Rage. So shouldnt drag it off topic.

    hi.

    i've read the crap, but still. free roam or gtfo. no offence.....
    i've actually been waiting for this game for ages, so happy it was out,
    but disappointed cuz it's on RAILS. .. i can't get over that... the graphics are suburb. I've played around 6 times , and i've played ALOT of games (mostly 3rd person) im igaming pro :p but still i cannot play it with skill enough to enjoy the game. this is becuase 1) it goes way too quick, can't manage to get much bash bux/specials, 2. once monsters start hitting you, and you needa reload, you just stand there like 10 seconds getting hit and not reloading properly. 3. because it's too quickly paced, we as gamers cannot enjoy the goddness hd graphics (one of gamer's favs). As you can see, these three main disappointments root from the game not being frreeee roammmm.

    I assure you, it would be really hard to improve the game without adding free roam ( i understand it was made to be railed so it's too late). limitations of many things since it is railed. one thing though,: bashbux spent for guns and upgrades.

    Rage will never be as famous and will do so much more if it were to be freeroam.

    I thought the story integration in Doom Resurection added a lot to the game and made me want to play it more. I'd like to see a story added to rage, and I'd also like more control over the camera--if the rail looks are going to pan so fast, I'd like to able to look back a bit farther.

    I really don't beleve this if you read page 30-34 in iTunes connect Dev guidelines there is nothing in there about setting up taxes other than us canada japan aus I know in nz you only have to do gst forms if you are set up for gst and at the price of .99usd - 1.99usd there is unlikely to be any import tax

    My .02 cents but I really whant this game and some of the other id games

    Sorry... I stepped into the game for about 5 minutes and I wrapped it up with a failing grade.

    The control scheme is something awful. Seriously, anyone here who liked the game enjoys pain and punishment. First I had to change the sensitivity to the max. Dragging my finger all the way accross the screen and still coming up short on the mob is very bad.

    Then there is the part about while I am trying to aim, my character is jittering like a mofo whos on crack chased with a 2 liter of coffee. How am I supposed to aim when my guy is moving back and forth like that? As an avid PC shooter fan who loves getting his head shot quotas in, I stopped right there. I really don't care how the game looks or sounds... if I can't aim the stupid gun then forget it. Also I ran out of ammo pretty quick because I had no time to shoot ammo dumps. Heck several times I didn't get a chance to kill the mob... atleast I can be thankful the game dosn't let him claw my back.

    Oh yea, whats with the avid use of full motion video? You have an awesome 3d engine.. quite wasting my download times with pre recorded videos!

    Dear John,

    I first want to utter a huge thanks for the wonderful snackaroony you blessed us with two days ago. I love it very much and the following are my suggestions:

    1. I have come to realize that you can't kill a mutant when he is in his appearing stage. To be more precise, when I'm making good on time, I see a mutant crawling on a wall, I blast him while he is still on the wall and never able to kill him. It seems like they only take damage after they get off the wall. It would be great if they could take damage while still on the wall and have a nice dead-body-falling physics to take care of the rest.

    2. Since it's on rails, it can become eventually easy to learn the pattern. I think it would be great to add some re-playability by introducing random mutant appearance where ever possible. Thus if in one play through in a particular room a mutant appeared from the right. Make him jump off the ceiling in another round.

    3. I understand about the limitations and design restrictions that hinders the possible notion of this game getting off the rails. Perhaps you designed it that way and therefore that is what the core programing defines it to be. May I make this argument: Your game looks fantastic, however like many others have loudly voiced, at times all we would like to do is STOP, look around, and take in this gorgeous looking world for a few seconds. Right before we can let these awesome visuals burn through our retinas, we are yanked to the right by the camera and thrown into another room and forced to mutilate more muties.

    Therefore, even if this game can never be off the rails, you mentioned the possibility of releasing two more games based on Rage before the console version release . May I hope and ask that one of those other two games can truly show your programing prowess by having it be free roam? How about something a la COD:Zombies where us and a few AI (or real players via networks) buddies in a room or sewers, whatever, are just trying to stay alive against the hungry hoard of muties? I strongly believe the full appreciation to the visuals, art style and quality can only fully be realized in a free roam environment. Please think about it and make it happen. I have faith in your John Cormack. ;)

    I got suggestion what kind of game you should do. As the iOS rage was made for taste the second game should give town taste or driving taste. Well for users you should show us power of graphics don't make an other game with rails just don't do it. Well for racing rage game you should include multiplayer it and for town game some exploring the city.

    Sorry I didnt read through the whole thread (I should though as it seems it can do with a lot of clean up. Whats up with asking the same question like non availability in some stores or whining about its on rails multiple times? these questions have been answered and discuseed already adn there are other threads for rage to discuss this stuff. Please keep this one only for improvements and suggestions. Thanks)

    Now, as I said, I didnt read the whole thread and only glanced through the first few pages but I dont think I read anyone asking for customizable controls in the ipad version. Are they already there and I missed them somehow? In case they arent, I really do want controls to be customizable for the Ipad version. A button on the bottom left corner of the 10inch ipad is not really something I can use comfortably. Games like Gameloft FPS's, reckeless racing on ipad and even the iphone version of SF IV have such option and I do love them coz of that. Please add an option move all the controls (along with opacity level). Thanks :)

    John, I've loved all your games. This is awesome too. I know it's been said, but please do SOMETHING that is free roam that isn't a port on ancient Doom/Wolf tech. Please?

    Much as I destest a lot of what Gameloft does, have you played N.O.V.A.? If not, you should; mainly because the controls work so well.

    It IS possible.

    Are you expecting everything to be loveley, with a blue sky and everything verry colourfull on Doomsday?


    1. You're probably using accelerometer controlls. DON'T.
    2. You aren't supposed to turn arround 180° in each direction.
    3. You don't need to have sensivity on high. really.

    Sorry to reformulate the questions but since no one answered it I was afraid they got lost in the non-regarding-rail-shooters-not-suggestion-trolls....


    Now there is something confusing me: in the 1st game's thread I read a message from a modo saying Mr Carmack told him that, apart from possible tunings and enhancement, the game was a full feature and that no more levels could possibly be added because of the size and so on.
    Mr Carmack spoke in the 1st post here about future levels: what is to be expected then?


    - Control tuning
    It seems a general demand though I love it myself.
    By the way, did everybody properly understand that in the 1st method (tilting) you can also use your left thumb to aim, making it a very good method (tilting for fast and large movements thumb aiming for precise surgery ^^) ?

    There's only one huge problem with gyro's. Taken from Tilt to Live dev blog:
    So for people in a moving vehicle (car, train, plane) gyroscope would have to be turned off. Basically, just make it an option and everyone's happy.

    I'd also like it if there was an option to deactivate the vibration. Since this is a game with a mostly fixed field of view, it's unnecessary. You're likely to know that you are getting attacked anyways.

    I think I v got something very manageable and great for the game :

    RANK MODE

    An infinite mode (you could choose to do 1-2-3-3 reverse -2 reverse - 1 reverse and so on with a 2nd loop harder for instance) where the better you are at the game the harder it gets and the worse you are the easier it gets.

    It s a completely addictive system, seen for the first time in battle garegga decades ago and recently in the very good phoenix shmup on IOS and since a rail shooter has a lot in common with a shmup and it wouldn t be so hard to implement (I guess....) you should definitely think about that.

    The more I think about it the more I like that idea and 3 levels would become more than enough with such a system

    Haven't seen any other responses from John, but he's made it pretty clear in interviews that no more levels would be coming. So does that mean even the "mirrored" versions he seemed to think were possible also aren't going to happen?

    Would love to hear John on whether they would still be considering this to add to the content. Don't think it would add much to the size if they're using mostly the same assets.

    Hi, I'd like to ask why your games are not available in all countries? I'd buy them if I could but it's only available in selected countries. Actually of all the ID Software Library only Wolf 3D Free is available for me. What gives? http://dear-apple.com/this-is-why-we-pirate-0

    And the other thing, you mentioned that HD game is outselling SD one by leaps and bounds, I don't know what kind of hardware people use, maybe on iPhone 4 HD version runs flawlessly because of 512MB, but at least on iPad it often skips a beat when you say smash a mutant and before it displays blood splashes everything stops for a fraction of a second.

    So after trying HD version I did fall back to RAGE SD which runs just perfect, silky smooth all the time. Somehow I doubt I am the only one noticing this, this problem is quite common with latest games. For example Sam&Max (yes it's not latest but anyway) is choppy to the point of unplayablility and Epic Citadel while very pretty still is not 100% smooth, so please don't throw everything on visual quality. Constant framerate and smoothness is more important.

    And thank you very much for all the games you've made.
