Hopefully Apple will release a new lineup of iPod touches here this next month...I'm assuming they'll stick to tradition.
If they do release something new...and it has some decent improvements from the second generation...I plan on buying it.

    My question is...
I've spent close to $300 on applications.
Will I be able to transfer all those to my new iPod for for free?!

Yes. Sync with itunes and it will create a backup of everything on your touch.

When you buy the new one, sync your backup onto the new device and everything will be exactly the same. Saved data, apps, settings, everything.

You can always re-download apps from the appstore for free as well at anytime you want if your logged into the same account. You won't get charged twice.

actually this is not the case, since his device udid is diff, he will lose his saved games. however the latter remains.

You sure?.....I just got a replacement ipod last week (broken home button) and synced my old backup right to it with no problems. UDID's were different. Don't see why it'd be different for upgrading devices?

Saved games will remain intact when you use a backup across devices (with different UDIDs). I've had 2 devices before. Im on my third UDID now. The only caveat is if the game purposefully checks for UDID and links the UDID to the save game. But I think very very few games do this.

will the two devices be able to hold the same games at the same time?

  8. You will only lose those saved games that use the UDID as an automatic identifier, such as with online multiplayer Mafia-type games. (iGangster characters can be transferred to a new device however; this can be done from your profile page.)

Some games games save stuff as a file in their own folder; those will be backed up.

Actually, that is incorrect. Apps and saved games should come through without a problem. The key is to backup your original device before syncing the new one, and making sure that you have set up iTunes to manage your media automatically, not manually. (And yes, I have done it myself -- from a 1st Gen iPhone to a 3GS.)

Should not be a problem. The original iDevice has a backup library on itunes. When the new iDevice is synced up with itunes, you have the option of transferring the data and apps to the new iDevice.

I think that saved game data will be kept.
