Then, what is the 3d counterpart ? Think about it, if the universe is like a flat sheet of paper, and it goes on in all directions on the X co-ordinate for instance, what is above and below it? Whats beyond that? Its like if a 2d cartoon character could suddenly see the 3d world outside. Just something to think about.
Yeah it was one of the halloween specials, where homer got sucked into a 3d plane and ended up in our universe, pure genius ! but yes, this is exactly what I'm talking about. We talk about the universe being infinite and that's completely fine, but I think people usually boil that down to the universe being infinite in all directions, which could also be true. What I'm hinting at here, is that all of that could be true and at the same time there are dimensions surrounding our universe in a way that we could never understand since the "dimensions" are governed by different and more complicated rules outside of ours. sorry if this is all a little strange, it just came up last night during a philosophy session
reminds me of a book I read called Flatland. some world inhabited by shapes (squares, pentagons, etc) which has only two dimensions half of it was an introduction in the second half a Sphere comes and tries to show the main character (I think it was a square) a 3D world there was some note at the end addressing the fact that if the shapes living in the 2D world could 'see' each other then there must be a 3rd dimension... strange book
I get what you're saying, and I agree. While the universe is constantly expanding, what is beyond it? I'm thinking of something along the lines of dark energy and matter... idk though, no one really knows .......
As I understand it, the universe is already 3d. There is as much space above and below as there is in front and behind us.
i'm not saying it's not 3d, what I'm saying is imagine that it is 2d instead, and that there is a 3d outside of it. What I'm asking is what do you guys think that "3d" is.
Flatland is one of my favorite books. A square a citizen of a 2d land takes an adventure to 3d. He then tries to convince the sphere of a 4d and 5d but the sphere only laughs and dismisses his queries. A square even meets the king of line land whose kingdom is confined to a line contained on two points. The funniest is the king of the no dimension, ruling only a single point. Great book full of juicy allegories. It's short and cost's less than $5, you should all do yourselves a favor and check it out.
Better yet, it's on Project Gutenberg for FREE: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/97 and http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/201 (illustrated version) You can read it on your iPhone / iPod Touch with Stanza (also FREE!) Stanza links to Project Gutenberg, so if you go that route, you can download the book (and many, many others) from within the app...
It's an easy read so anyone interested in "eye openers" should have a look. See post above it's FREE.
No offense, but that's a dumb question. If the universe was two dimentional, there wouldn't be a third dimention. The question answers itself. Like asking "if there were only three possible colors in the universe, what would the fourth look like?"
I swear, you provoke me daily in this playful way. Seriously, if you want to go out, just ask! I promise not to tell my wife.
No, I get it. Philsophical questions often have very simple answers. Some people just refuse to see it. Btw, I'm writing this from my art studio where I spend ten hours a day. I'm the last person who needs to open my mind start thinking outside of anything.
way to limit yourself. Most of the artists I work with have the "you can always keep improving and nothing is ever finished" way of thinking. oh and btw, in your sig, it should be "wasted" not "waisted" unless you're measuring people for pants.
cool topic. There's a Star Trek TNG episode with organisms that live in a 2D plane... Bring time into the equation as another dimension (Special relativity) and things become really nutty...
