Thanks for your tutorial. It was really easy to set up. Five minutes or so. You are right. It's in qmodem/install.exe under "Modem, Communication Parameters, Default baud rate". I'll change that. What do you think, twr? Any chance to get Internet Explorer (Win3.x) to work just for fun? It's easy to install on iPad (description and download links) and it works but only with local HTML files. After IE install the IE setup wants to "Install New Modem" but now we have already qmodem up and running (silly Windows won't find it).
I have the two CDs of The 7th Guest, loaded into iDOS as ISO files, and can mount them and try to install... But it wants me to swap the CDs, and I cant see how to do that. I was hoping if I mounted both CDs as adjacent drive letters that I could get it to install....but no dice. Anyone have instructions on getting 7th guest to run inside iDOS? Thanks! Rixx
I know that @hodapp mentioned that he got it running, I don't own it so can't try, but may pick up the iPhone remake that has just been announced to come out in December
I suppose I could imagine it in places where the Internet still isn't widely available, if at all. It's only been, like, 12 years since I last called an honest-to-goodness landline BBS and switched wholly to the 'net so I imagine there must be some pockets of BBS-land still in existence that still need old protocol support and stuff.
The changes to the DOSPAD.cfg file should allow it to find a modem now. I see no reason why a copy of Trumpet Winsock couldn't be used to connect to the internet at large. The only real catch is that you'll need to find yourself a PPP server that works over an Internet port. If you can find that, you can setup DOSBox to dial and the Internet will be yours! (err... In painfully slow early-90's technology, that is.)
Thanks for the keyword. There was something like that in the oldest directories of my brain. I think I worked with it ages ago. But all that DOS stuff was long before my first "real" computer days. Very interesting and very informative as well. Right now I am downloading a program file via twr's server and qmodem on my iPad! (Protocol: Xmodem.) Slowly but reliable. And you obviously need the PgDn key (on the virtual iDOS keyboard) for an XModem transfer what is only available with iPad/iDOS in horizontal orientation as far as I can see (at the screenshot you can see PgUp, PgDn is below of it). Who needs an App Store or iTunes/filesharing? Sorry for all of those looking for working DOS games (hint: check out twr's server ). But this is highly educational in my honest opinion! Even the youngsters should be happy to see how all of that stuff with internet, bbs, email and usenet begun. In practice, working, and ready in your shirt pocket! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulletin_board_system I guess that's what running on twr's server as a "chat". The ancestor of all forums. The descendant of teletype. How did you set up a PPP server, thewiirocks? Is it as easy as getting a connection with it? Any recommended tutorial available? What do you need for it? Thanks again. All that stuff is highly amazing beyond games. Just to stay on topic. Have a look at the screenshot. And yes, there is a virtual Home key! (And you need it for qmodem menu.)
I'm working on uploads as well, so stay tuned! I have not set up a PPP server yet. I'm mostly talking in theoretical terms right now. PPP was the protocol used to adapt modems to TCP/IP. With the exception of some PPPoE usage in DSL systems, it's mostly not used anymore. You'll have to do a bit of research to figure it out. If someone wanted to be really clever, I suppose they could invest the time in setting a PPP ISP and then charge a couple bucks a month. Anyone interested in an ISP for iDOS? Hopefully I'll have a lot more features available for the BBS soon. Here are some of the features I'm looking at adding: - More software! - Software uploads so users can share with each other - Faster transfers with a custom client - More IRC-like chat that pushes updates without needing to refresh - ANSI Animations and Menus - Ability to put in a URL and download files from the internet at large - Links or Lynx support? If you want a particular feature sooner rather than later, please speak up and I'll prioritize. Also, is anyone interested in the source code? I'd be happy to take patches and allow other people to run their own BBSes.
Later this evening I'll try some of the games you mentioned and let you know how well they run on iPhone 4.
Ran Duke Nuke Em 1 on iPhone 4. Works perfectly with very little adjustments. Also tried Epic Pinball 1 and so far could only get it with smooth sound or 90% speed but not both at once.
Anyone have a dumbed down version on how to do this yet i'm lost Edit: Nevermind got it to work this is cool!
I have a suggestion, no idea if it will work though. What I would do is extract all the files from both CDs and then combine them into one ISO and then mount that. I'd done this with old other old games like Zork Nemesis (not for iDos, but on an old computer without a CD drive). Hope the suggestion helps!
FYI, the BBS now has over 65 unique, freeware programs and growing! All of the programs are the full versions. Not demos, not shareware. (Though I am considering a shareware category.) Here's a small sample: Major Stryker - A classic shoot-em'up from Apogee games Champ Galaxia - A spot-on Galaga clone One Must Fall 2097 - A fighting game involving giant robots beating the starch out of each other Xargon - A little-known but popular platformer from Epic Megagames MechWar - A clone of BattleTech Mr. Boom - An excellent Bomberman clone Skyroads - Need I say more? Skyroads X-Mas Special - Betcha' didn't even know this existed! Rouge - Like adventure? Like dungeon crawling? Well, this is the granddaddy of dungeon adventure! POVRay - A free raytracer for creating photorealistic graphics! Turbo C - A compiler and IDE for making DOS programs TheDraw - A tool for colorful ANSI graphics. I'll be using this to enhance the BBS soon! Everything has been checked and is currently legal freeware. Check it out and let me know if there's anything you would like me to add! Also, I think the BBS needs a proper name. Anyone have a good suggestion?
ghosts'n'goblins can someone help me? i have Ghosts'n'Goblins in idos, and the game starts well (i presume) with a long loading, then stops and the screen says that i must calibrate the joystick and so can go (i guess pressing return button)... but i can't go through, there's no button to bypass this screen... someone checked it? thanks!
True. But BBSes usually had really slick names. e.g. "Racer's Edge", "Portage Palace", "Assassins Grove", "Bears Den", "Cubic Mountain", "Ground Zero", "The Palace Of Exile", etc. Compared to those, iBBS sounds a little lame. We need to be cool! 1992 cool. So cool, we misspell it "kewl"! EDIT: Most people probably don't care, but I just managed to run a MOD file of "No-Limit" by 2Unlimited on my iPad. Yeah, we have MP3s now. But it was an incredible experience back then hearing this rocking music out of a 200 kilobyte file. I imagine you younger folks can't really understand the feeling of elation this gave the older generation, so just trust me. It was a BIG deal.
