    BTW, I've managed to get stock iDOS to connect to the Internet *without* the NE2000 patch! I'm working on doing something useful with it. I'll post more as I have it...

    Path no longer includes the Z drive?
    Type SET to see what the path variable is currently.
    My autoexec.bat looks like this:

    @Echo Off
    set PATH=c:\dos;c:\;z:\;c:\games;
    DN\DN

    hmm using those settings the same thing still happens, could it be that the game is running out of memory? would having only +/- 1 gb free space on my ipad cause that?

    The dos4gw one posted here a few pages back works wonderfully.

    Ugh. I forgot how slow XModem really was. Even over the internets, 128 bytes per packet just doesn't cut it.

  7. That's why they invented Ymodem, and eventually Zmodem.

    Jeez. Just typing that reminds me of how long it's really been since I've even had to utter those terms.

    Yup. But XModem is a hellva lot easier to implement. :D

    Tell me about it. The whole thing feels bizarrely odd. As if I took a trip through the twilight zone back to the 1980's. Yet I find myself writing this ancient, antique software in the modern Java language. So weird.

    You want to hear something REALLY weird? XModem implementations exist in Java. But that's not the weird part. The weird part is that they're commercial software. That's right, selling XModem software in Java is apparently so profitable that it supports more than one company selling the stuff!

    How's that for totally, utterly, completely bizarre?

    And I thought that it was weird that Dos Navigator's changelog has an entry for 2010. The fact that someone is updating DOS programs in 2010 blew my mind.

    That, and being able to play Settlers anywhere.

    ok...

    I just needs some clarification so I'm not beating myself over the head, just to get IDOS to work perfectly....

    I have an Ipod Touch 3rd gen. Dos games are kind of slow no matter what cycle I put it too. And any sound blaster sound stutters like crazy. If I turn that off, it still stutters. Even simple games like Duke Nukem 1,biomenace, Secret Agent etc.., runs slow(playable) but slow

    My question is, am I beating a dead horse trying to get these simple games to run smooth on a 3rd Gen device. Is there a BIG Speed boost with this IDOS program running on say an Ipod Touch(or Iphone4) 4th gen between the 3rd gen? I mean, worth going out and getting the latest Generation? As up till now 3rd gen has been fine for most apps.....so is there a big speed noticable boost(to upgrade my ipod) for most older games(I''m talking dukeI&II, Biomenace,Prince of Persia1, Castles 2, Epic Pinball with sound) those types, not the Need for speed games and stuff that is out of reach.

    Thanks in advance!!

    Wow! Would you seriously consider getting a new device to run a dos emulator??:) that's serious retro commitment:) I applaud you sir! I can only speak for iPhone 4 but several games run really well for me (fate of Atlantis, xcom 1+2, discworld, day of the tentacle), it's kinda become my de facto point and click playing app cos the scummvm games run so well with a little cycle tweaking. So, it seems to work well on my devce.
    Hope that helps

    I, too, applaud the notion that you might upgrade your iDevice to better your DOS emulation. However, before you buy a new device, I would advise tinkering with the config settings. The cycle rates are really just the first of many things that can be adjusted.

    Here I am running an iPhone 4 and certain games run great with only Ctrl-F11 and others require a process of trial and error for me since I am only adequately fluent in DOS.

    Check out Rixx's posts in this thread for some helpful pointers, I. E. Quote:

    Wow

    Okay, I got iDos when it came out a few days ago, stumbled across this thread a day ago, just read all the way through and I'd like to say that there is a lot of help here. I'm an old DOS user (I actually used to write my bat files with copy con, and hardly ever had to edit them afterward lol)

    I have seen some people asking about full throttle, and I can confirm that it runs, and runs pretty well. Some occasional stuttering, but it lasts for only a few seconds. I got it to install by using the CD version. I mounted the CD and installed from there. Installer is actually slower than the game.

    Alright folks, anyone and everyone who wants to use a BBS over the internet, line up!

    This first revision is going to require some technical expertise. So if you can't figure it out, wait for better instructions.

    Step 1: Add the following to your DOSPAD.CFG...

    Code:
    [serial]
    serial1=modem listenport:2323
    Step 2: Download and install a Modem package. QModem is the fastest, with speeds up to 115,200 baud. ProComm is a bit easier to use, though.

    Step 3: Configure your package for the modem. (QINSTALL.EXE for QModem, ALT-P in ProComm) Set it to COM1 with as fast of a baud rate as it will let you select.

    Step 4: Type the following "ATDTjava.dnsalias.com" and hit ENTER.

    Step 5: Enjoy! :)

    This is super-ultra-beta right now, so go easy please! The server might crash, I might restart it, you might have connection problems. So go easy on me for now. ;)

    I have no comparison with older devices right now but I can confirm that Epic Pinball runs on perfect speed with iPhone 4 (iOS 4.1) and iPad (iOS 3.2.2), both never jb, without any tweaks (when you want more than pc speaker sound you'll have to run setup.exe). I described that here (incl. download link):

    I know, seems ridicules I know. But my heart and soul of gaming were the earlier DOS games and Win 95 games(like the games I mentioned and others like mechwarrior 2 and such). And while buying a forth gen might be a little extreme...or a lot, depending how you look at it.

    My deal is that if the speed increase is enough to run full speed AND it has decent sound for the older games, then it would be justified to me. As the DOS games are the games I really enjoyed. While yes, I could just get an old laptop and haul it around. But it would be better to just put DOS in the pocket and play as I go. That is the theory anyways. In fact a lot of these older games are WAY better then most of the stuff on the App store now.

    But again, that is a difference of a opinion, as some live in the past(like me) and some prefer the newer apps...and there is room for a little of both too.

    Thank you for the tweaks suggestion, I have given them a go(even though this thread is way to long), but even with the tweaks its still slow on my 3rd gen. (however Castles 2 runs pretty decent without sound, which is one of my favorites).

    But if the difference in emulation speed is THAT much. Then I might just make the plunge.

    Thanks, twr! Works on my iPad!

    I did not have to change anything. Was all preselected fine. Just run qinstall.exe, answer the difficult question if you have a color or a monochrome monitor (uhm… yes, color) and look for the exit (top right).

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monochrome_monitor

    Type that inside qmodem. You don't need upper case letters.

    Could read the short chat that is inside. So you did set up the server? BTW quit qmodem with ALT + X.

    Awesome. Just awesome. I never did run internet in DOS before. A complete new experience.

    Excellent! I'm especially happy to hear that it was easy to set up! Thanks for the feedback!

    I believe it defaults to 2400 baud. That will work for chat, but it will be painfully slow for downloading files. I highly recommend bumping up to 115200.

    I know I'll be getting a 15 inch MacBook pro before the ipod touch 4G and configuring it's bootcamp partition, so for me it won't be as much of an issue- I'll be able to take that with me to play system shock. Still, I'd love to have a 4G iPod touch just to play it with the mouselook mod and regular music smoothly even if I have to use frameskip=1 (try that with SSP on max and dynamic CPU speeds and cores respectively- and it isn't the same intuitive experience without the mouselook mod).
