From Hotapp's article, the developer has submitted another version without the 2 built-in game and blocks the access to the iDevice's root. Wait and have our fingers crossed, mate.

Yay! I hope the jailbroken version still allows access to root.

Giving up on Wing Commander 1 and 2

    So sad

So i had WC2 working, but I get a complete freeze, compelte crash, halfway through the second mission, once you see the big ship that starts with a C, the main ship, I fergot name.

Its a massive crash two, even emulator crashes, cant change cycles.

My settings were core=normal, and cycles somewhere around 1700.

    Ipod 3g touch.

Wing commander 1 is actually more frustrating.
I get it to start up perfectly. But then, when I have to click on the middle boxes to either continue a campaign or start a new one, the mouse doesnt respond, heads straight to the upper left corner, and I cant stop it. Basically, its like the mouse needs to calibrate or something. I dont get this problem with WC2, so I am totally at a loss. I dont know how to turn off the mouse in this program, and frankly, I want the mouse bc it makes pilotting work well in this emulation. So WC1 is ****ed too.

Can't find privateer, so im just sad.

If any smarter person than me (which is everybody) can figure it out, either problem, I would be soooo indebted.

I tried a few other games:

Sim City 2000 with S3 graphics card is really slow and has graphic errors. For example, the toolbar is missing and the menu ;). But the sound works. Oh boy, memories :D.

Discworld works perfectly. And I must say, they offer the best interface for an adventure which works so perfectly on the iPad, that I no longer consider Broken Swork and BaSS as the best implementations: They just offer a mouse cursor. Nothing else. Move it, tap to go, double tap to perform an action. Perfect!

    Arkanoid: Perfect!

Nascar Racing: Way. Too. Slow. And requires a Joystick.

Wing Commander 2 with voice acting: I just started it and animations, sound and voice are perfect. Did not have the time to play battles yet.

Incredible Machine 2: Crashes. Looks like a dos4gw error. I will try to replace dos4gw with the "clone" which works better and faster in dosbox.

So far, Lemmings and Discworld are the games, which really make me grin and love iDOS. Both run absolutely perfect and smooth on the iPad (Lemmings stutters on the iPhone 4).

Oh, and I also installed Windows 3.1. It was the same like years ago, when I came from PC/GEOS and went to Windows, thought "Whut?" and then bought OS/2 immediately, because I just couldn’t stand Windows :).

Alright, I downloaded the wrong version of GTA. When I run it, it works fun until I try to play the game, which turns it into a blank screen D:

Beware: It contains the installation files for Windows 3.1 and a disk image with Windows 95. NSFW.

Why would you think those would be easy to run?

iDOS itself is an emulator. Running an emulator on top of another emulator is going to require a ton of power and the i devices just don't have that kind of capability.

Great tutorial. I already have win 3.1 installed. Is it possible to just do the "upgrade" to win 95 using your files?

Karateka works phenomenally, good ole CGA graphics
Oregon Trail works perfect, but writing is too small to really read (ipod touch)
Double dragon 1 and 2 good to go as well.

Well, you don't have to install Windows 3.1 at all, I should have constructed two separate tutorials, unfortunately, you cannot simply upgrade 3.1 to Windows 95 with this method, as the file include for Windows 95, is just a bootable image of Windows 95.

But if you want to have only Windows 95, just remove all the Win 3.1 stuff, and then, all you would need to do is first of all, open up notepad, paste the following into notepad:

and then save it as 'win.bat' (make sure 'Save type as' is set to all files), and then copy that (win.bat) across to your iDevice with the 'w95.img'.

And all you have to do to launch windows 95 is type 'win' as explained in the tutorial, but instead of asking for a selection, it will boot straight to it.

Thanks. I took the W95 part of that because I had W3.1 already installed (bought both of them decades ago) plz see below (W3.1). Almost unbelievable. A bootable and working W95 on iPad! Same screenshot as above but original size.

When you try to start W95/Internet Explorer it will end with an error. Maybe I'll try to install an older IE version or Netscape. There is no possibility to install network drivers ("can't find W95 CD").

On iPad/iDOS/Win3.1 I could install Internet Explorer version 3.03 for Win 3.1, sources:

    IE
    http://wiki.oldos.org/Downloads/Windows3x

    W3.1
    http://sites.google.com/site/osabandonware/downloads-1
(Put all disk files together into a directory win, zip it and transfer win.zip to iDOS, unzip there, go inside directory win, run setup.exe. Install needs about 10 minutes.)

    Screenshot: IE 3.03 under Win3.1 on iPad/iDOS:

It starts and loads local HTML files but I didn't figure out yet how to establish an Internet connection. According to…

    http://www.litchie.net/apps/dospad.html

…an alternative version of iDOS (JB-Beta) should be able to connect. "COPY command can copy a hyper-linked file." Sounds good!

What do you think? Will I need an antivirus scanner for my iPad?! ;)

I was in the same situation (having already Win3.1 in a folder called "Windows"). Just copy W95.img and win.bat—I renamed the latter to wv.bat (windows version) because the command win starts already W3.1 here—to iDOS and choose at the DOS prompt your preferred version to boot as described in twisted_pro's tutorial (here with the command wv and not win).

So you don't "upgrade" from W3.x to W95 but you have both versions at your hands: A clean and usable installation of W3.x and an image of W95 to play with.

HINT: Before booting to windows (3.11 with more than 16 colors, W95) type cycles 4500 into DOS prompt. Then the OS will be much quicker (but some system sounds distorted)—so as you were used to it decades ago (maybe even faster).

When you screw up W95 (what is easy; foolish Habakuk tried to install network drivers) just make a "fresh install", needs half a minute. Delete W95.img from iPad and get a "new" copy from your CD… uhm, iTunes. :) W95 is something to play and not very reliable, with DOS & W3.1 you can really accomplish things.

I always switch the mouse speed down to the lowest in windows settings.

Examples and step by step guides how to download and compress, install and play games with iDOS:

Epic Pinball (and how to use mouse, drag & drop, double click)

I solved the 16mb problem I had yesterday when I tried win95 just by adding

    [dosbox]
    memsize=64

I'm not using the same copy as everyone else though I don't think I just took the copy that was already on my psp and it worked I might try 98lite again when I get the chance, now I have access to a little more ram maybe it won't take as long to boot.

Images attached hopefully I've done it right
