Yup, it does have write permissions to the whole iOS File System... just take at the screenshot I've made on my non-jailbroken, iOS 4.2b3 iPad: EDIT: tried to copy a file to the root of D:; didn't work. That is, write permissions are partial only.
in case it hasn't been answered here yet, you can change the 'cycles' settings while in the app by clicking the FN key, then using combo of CTRL+F11 and CTRL+F12 to go up/down, although don't expect it to turn the XT machine into a 486DX2/66 i think benefits of that combo vary by game, in some cases a slightly lower value might be better. play around and test things out.
Performance For those wondering how to push the app a bit further and get more juice, CTRL-F11 and CTRL-F12 will lower and increase CPU cycles (the 3000 which appears in the lower part of the screen on iPhone). This should help the CPU run a bit faster (but not necessarily smoother). Also, deactivating sound helps a lot. Finally, you can tinker in the dospad.cfg file (extract it, edit it, put it back in). Lookup some parameters you can edit with DosBox, this should give an idea of the possibilities. But backup the .ipa file first. You might bust the app while tinkering with the .cfg file. Don't hold me responsible for going too far if you don't know what you're doing. Also, please keep your speed/playability expectations at ground or at a relatively realistic level. Remember that the iPhone runs a 1.something GHz processor with 512 RAM (iPhone 4 that is, the older devices have even less RAM). Try running an emulator on a Pentium 3 of old and you'll get the idea. Edit: araczynsk beat me to it
funny how we both shared the same thing in successive posts after 37 pages of people wondering that anyway, the dev said that if you bork your cfg file, just delete it or rename it, the app will recreate a default one.
Mission Accomplished! Also Added Space Quest 4 just to stoke more jealousy Both run great, SQ4 runs with touchscreen mouse support.
Need help with installing Win 3.1 If I try to copy the files through itunes file transfer, it only takes 432 out of the total 479 required files and then itunes shuts down. Is there another way to transfer the files?
per http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/Dosbox.conf (the very last option) autoexec might be supported, so loading that DN utility mentioned earlier (page ~9?) might be a good option. also explains a lot of other things.
Real programmers type: Code: copy con dospad.cfg Then do the entire file by hand with the fake IBM keyboard! (If you actually plan to try this without knowing what you're doing, make sure you run "copy dospad.cfg dospad.org" first. That will backup the original configuration.)
Quick compare with iPad and iPhone note: Commander Keen 4 works with full sound on the iPad but choppy sound on iPhone 4. Unsuprisingly much easier to use on iPad due to screen size for keyboard and emulated display Oh and iPad needs a \ before the zip file to unzip but iPhone 4 didn't
This is super exciting and all but let's be realistic - most games running on iDOS are almost unplayable. It's a cool gimmick but nothing more than that.
File transfer I'm not sure why one would give himself a headache with using the iTunes file transfer panel, which seems awkward (or just plain unusable). I don't know if can post that kind of things here, but I personally use another solution, with a single-word name that has to do with "Phone" and "Disk". Google is your friend. It uses MacFUSE to gain per-application root access, so it basically allows you, for example, to mount iDOS as a disk image or USB key, so you can transfer anything you want, anywhere you want it. Works like a charm.
