I wonder if you realize how weird (or ridiculous) you look to make such superficial affirmation without knowing more than a little bit RPG on DS. Here a first list where Square Enix isn't the publisher nor the developer and this is a selection with two axes, quality and originality (a full list would be massive):
    • Might & Magic Clash of Heroes : Ubisoft/Capybara Games
    • Infinite Space : Sega/Nude Maker
    • Mystery Dungeon Shiren the Wanderer : Sega/Chunsoft
    • Magical Starsign : Nintendo/Brownie Brown
    • Suikoden Tierkreis : Konami/Konami
    • Mario & Luigi Partners in Time : Nintendo/Nintendo
    • Lock's Quest : THQ/5th Cell
    • Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor : Atlus/Atlus
    • Mario & Luigi Bowser's Inside Story : Nintendo/Alpha Dream
    • Puzzle Quest : D3 Publisher/Infinite Interactive
    • Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon : Nintendo/Nintendo
    • Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey : Atlus/Atlus
    • The Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass : Nintendo/Nintendo
    • The Legend of Zelda Spirit Tracks : Nintendo/Nintendo
    • Avalon Code : Rising Star Games/Matrix Software
    • Lunar Knights : Konami/Kojima Productions
    • Phantasy Star Zero : Sega/Sega
    • Super Robot Taisen OG Saga Endless Frontier : Atlus/Monolith Soft
    • Puzzle Quest 2 : D3 Publisher/Infinite Interactive
    • Disgaea DS : NIS America/Nippon Ichi Software
    • Contact : Atari/Grasshopper Manufacture Inc
    • Luminous Arc 2 : Atlus/Image Epoch
    • Knights in the Nightmare : Atlus/Sting
    • Etrian Odyssey : Atlus/Atlus
    • Etrian Odyssey 2 : Atlus/Atlus
    • Lost Magic : Ubisoft/Taito

Plus those where the developer isn't Square:
    • Dragon Quest IV : Square Enix/Arte Piazza
    • Dragon Quest V : Square Enix/Arte Piazza
    • Dragon Quest IX : Square Enix/Level-5
    • Chrono Trigger : Square Enix/TOSE
    • The World Ends With You : Square Enix/Jupiter
    • Final Fantasy The 4 Heroes of Light : Square Enix/Matrix Software
    • Valkyrie Profile Covenant of the Plume : Square Enix/Tri-Ace
    • Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days : Square Enix/H.A.N.D

And for mention those published and developed by Square Enix:
    • Final Fantasy IV
    • Final Fantasy III
    • Final Fantasy Tactics A2 : Grimoire of the Rift
    • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles : Ring of Fates
    • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles : Echoes of Time
    • Final Fantasy XII : Revenant Wings

What RPG have you really played on DS?

If you hate JRPG there's some excellent RPG on DS that aren't JRPG but clearly it's not a good idea to choose the DS for someone not curious or interested in JRPG.

The problem of RPG on idevice is a problem of quality level, and I don't mean they are all crap.

I enjoyed playing a large part of some RPG on ipad but there's just no comparison for the quality point of view with top RPG on DS, even by removing all Square Enix publishing on DS. Here where is the huge difference. I don't mean at all that all RPG on idevice aren't fun to play. It's just that in term of quality there's just no comparison, at least for those I played.

In the first list I made above, without any Square RPG, the best RPGs I played on my ipad could compare approximately to the last in the list, the last 9/10 for example. This let 17/18 RPG significantly better, that's a lot.

But yes for players that can't support JRPG then DS RPG is pointless but such attitude is close to blindness. Me too I don't like JRPG because they tend have all some weakness I really don't like, but when the RPG quality surpass a quality level, this great quality level minimize a lot all the classical JRPG problems.

Other than that, I wonder what sandbox RPG is good on idevice? That's not at all my favorite RPG type but I'm curious. Perhaps The Quest? Tried a little bit the demo let me so cold but well I didn't really gave it a chance.

No matter what u list u still can't show a single open world or sandbox rpg game on the ds and the iPad already has xenome and the quest and soon two others and swords and sorcerers which might be more unique than all the ds rpgs combined. And The psp sucks so bad most ppl only use it for emulation and home brew (which is even crispier and more casual than wii or gab games much less iPhone) and even below dreamcast home brew.
