This is very true, I also agree about the distinction between hardcore and casual, it just seems to me that a lot of the people that say they are hardcore gamers and such are just trying to look cool to other people, in my opinion a game is a game, so when people who enjoy gaming say "Oh I'm such a hardcore gamer" they're just trying to justify their like in games and somehow look cool in front of other people.
I sometimes refer to myself as a hardcore gamer, but not to look cool. I think it makes me sound more of a nerd than anything, in fact I almost look down on other people that say it, so it's not something I'm particularly proud of. I'm not hardcore in that "#1 on the leaderboards" kinda way either, I just buy and play way, way too many consoles and games.
I think I'm probably somewhere in the middle. I do like my hardcore games, but I rarely play on my PS3 now and most of my gaming goes into playing iPhone games. Are "hardcore" iPhone games considered to be casual/softcore in the overall gaming world?
Well let's do the test: do any of the games make you want to rip the skin from your bones and inject your eyes with acid the way Veteran difficulty on CoD3 does?
There are exceptions like yourself, but at least based on the people I have met, the majority of people that call themselves hardcore gamers are trying to act cool or something, and are constantly whining about how some people don't play the game like it's there life. I actually have two friends that are pretty much obsessed with halo, they call themselves hardcore gamers and I really just play for fun (I find it pointless to get really frustrated about games), so they'll always whine to me that I'm not good enough.
Almost. I did get very frustrated when I was playing GT: Racing, trying to beat the final B-class race. After trying and trying again (for at least 100 times) I gave up. I was so annoyed that I couldn't do it that even after a couple of days of not playing it, I was still pissed at myself and at the game.
What makes a hardcore gamer anways? The genre of game played? The time invested in playing a game? Would I be considered hardcore because of all the casual games I play then? Hmmm.....
And then there's the people who don't call themselves hardcore gamers since they have played like 7 games over a span of two years, but still get really mad when their team is scrubbish. Like me. I do get annoyed by people who cite ratings (M, T, E, etc.) when trying to argue which is game is better and more 'hardcore'. "Starcraft 2? What are you 5? That game is rated T for teen! I play CoD, which is rated M !@#$!!"
Yeah, Apple has to make it (if it was done) so ALL devs would catch on. Thats why the iPad sold so well; if a company like Texas Instruments, for example, made the iPad, but called it something different, but the device still retained all the same features, nobody would buy it because the company isn't really established as an "entertainment" device maker. Apple started early with the mac, and their company is large and famous enough now that if they did release a thingy like this it would be all over the place in hours, and devs would practically be forced to support it because so many people would have it. I carry my iPod Touch as my primary gaming device and a cell phone as well. The reason the iPod Touch and iPhone have sold so well is because they have many different functions. I am not necessarily saying that Apple needs to be game-exclusive, (as it would hurt sales becuase it wouldn't be as functional) however they could take their already dominating multi-talented device and expand its gaming functionality without "touching" its other functions (no pun intended) (There are many posts with this same point, but honestly, I think yours is one of the most well-supported and the best overall representation of the rest) There are a few reasons why I believe a case would be a good expansion: 1. 4 generations of devices: With the iPhone and iPod touch 4 already out, 4 x 2 = 8. If Apple's new devices came out with integrated buttons, only 2/10 of the devices people own would be compatible. If the option was expandable, 5 gen devices as well as older models would be able to use this; and devs would take it more seriously, as 10/10 devices could be compatible. 2. Functionality: While a nice feature for the fraction of users that are gamers (lets say 1/2 of all idevice users) that want buttons (lets say 1/4th of that: 1/8th total), adding them for the 7/8ths of the market that doesn't need/want these buttons may turn them off from buying a device sooner. This means that if a thing that was attachable and detachable was created, it would further boost the power and efficiency of pricing of the iPhones and avoiding unnecessary features.
Yeah that's pretty ridiculous. It means they've probably never played Super Mario World, which is just awesome whichever way you look at it. Manic Miner too, that's pretty damn hardcore and it's unrated. I guess there are two types of hardcore gamer. Those who obsessively play one or two titles over and over and refine their skills to something almost Godlike, and those who obsessively collect as many games as their income can handle. I quite like being part of the second group, it gives me a good overview of the subject and I'm quite interested in how all the technology works and even some of the business aspects too, so it suits me down to the ground.
Hardcore this, hardcore that... Lol at the hundred+ instances it's been used in this thread. 'hc game' is practically an oxymoron, you guys gotta stop watching so much porn
I agree thats ridonkolous ratings are there for parents and thats it. As for the second thing I like to consider myself a hybrid. I play a couple of games a lot and get good at them. But I am also open to all other games and types of gameplay and try to play all the games that Ican.
Hahaha, top man. I hate the term hardcore anything. It sounds like trying too hard. I could say I am a hardcore sweet eater, instead, I say I love sweets. Much less stupid.
I have had a PSP for the last year or so - it barely gets played. My iPod touch gets used daily - for gaming, TV, Movies, music, internet, etc. I love it - it is like having a computer in your pocket. Whats better is that with so many ports of retro classics, and retro inspired games - it is like I have a computer from my favourite era of PC gaming in my pocket.
