I agree. Definitely go with pixels. :) Icon 1 or 2 in pixel art would be phenomenal.

    Video looks interesting as well.

    Hi,

I just wanted to add my 2 cents, since one of my jobs was as an icon designer ;)

I think option 1 pops-up the most, because of the contrast with black.

I do like option 2, but all the elements are bright, so I can't quite make out the face of the character right away. If the background was darker, it would pop-up better.

I don't like option 3 at all. I know some folks here like this option, but that pixel art in particular looks like it was the wrong resolution image uploaded by mistake. It lowers the quality of the game and the average consumer may think it is a mistake. For example, the faded shadow on top of the characters' hair, looks like a compression artifact. You could make the art pixelated, but you don't need to add the blurriness.

Also, I don't think it is a good idea to make the icon frame pixelated, because it looks like an error.

I think it might be a good idea to have option 1 or 2 as pixel art, but it has to be crisp and well done.

I think you should try smooth edges for the frame, with crisp pixel art inside.
I think option 2 with a darker background (better contrast) would work nicely.

Sorry for the long post :p
