For someone who has not played either Balder's Gate or Balder's Gate 2, which do you suggest I give a try first, one of the BG or Icewind Dale? My interest has been sparked with the these releases, and I want to give this style of game a try. Thanks in advance.
Baldur's Gate 1, since it is a more varied, dynamic experience than Icewind Dale. Icewind Dale is very combat-focused, whereas the BG series has a wider range of activities and a MUCH greater focus on narrative, investigation and NPC interaction. The BG series is a more traditional RPG (indeed, it is one of THE archetypical RPGs), while ID is a small step closer to the Diablo paradigm (small, mind you, as combat is still modelled after Baldur's Gate, with tactical party combat, pausing and RTS elements, not the frantic clicking of Diablo). However, should you enjoy the combat system and tactics of BG (or just the engine, atmosphere or setting in general), Icewind Dale is an excellent follow-up, a nice break in between BG 1 and 2, and a way to prolong the Forgotten Realms/Infinity Engine experience in general.
From someone who didn't really enjoy baldurs gate II due to the UI (small text, small everything really) and performance issues, should I give this one a chance.. I really tried enjoying BG but never could
I'm using a mini retina so the lagging came as a surprise for sure.. There's also so much reading to do in BG II.. I usually don't mind reading but I'm guessing the small text makes it a bit tedious for me.. I was going to skip this one but that 5 star review really has me thinking.. What to do what to do ###
they added a Font option in the later BG releases so you should be able to make the text as large as you need it to be..
To answer my own question from a few pages back: This game still has the minimizable side bars, however the tab for bringing them back up again is larger than in baldur's gate making it easier to press. Probably at least twice as large. It's now easily doable, though I'm on a 6+. Also in baldur's gate I've found the tabs able to be pressed again just with a bit of dexterity and patience. Basically avoid minimising them in baldur's gate, though with some dexterity it's not game breaking. Turning up the font size in options is an absolute must. I max it out. This is a setting that I reckon plenty of would be Bg or IWD players on iPhones have overlooked and probably don't play the game because. I really wouldn't want to play this on something smaller than the 6+ though tbh. Depends how good your eyes are and how good you want them to be at the end of playing the game on such a small screen lol.
You may have better luck or responses on the official Beamdog forums, just because the devs / PR guys frequent them and other players from other platforms such as PC / Steam, etc. I for one have not started this yet just because I'm still finishing BG1.. and having so much fun with the new X-com expansion.
yay... playing an old time favorite... Just wondering though... All the way in the beginning, I kill the monsters... at least I am trying to. All they end up are "Nearly Dead" I can't kill them completely, so they are coming back to life. Can I kill that group of monsters, so I can finish that quest ?
Anyone think this will have a sale soon like BG did? Cuz I could play it on my iPhone 4. Yep. Sure could. Mmmmhm.... Yepppperooni.....
I agree with your other responder, to an extent. The IWD port seems to be more fleshed out that BG1. People are a lot happier with it as a port, though they are all really great. I plan on IWD and I hardly remember BG1 or for that matter BG2 but they are all immaculate games.
Forgive me if this has already been asked. I tried several ways to search the thread and came up empty. Just bought and started this game. Love it but I'm having trouble with parts of the ui. Specifically, how to unlock/force open the door to aspel's shop so ican kill the wolf. I've also noticed there are some chests around that other sites suggest I should be able to loot. Tapping on the door or chests tells me LOCKED and it never unlocks or opens it. I have the default party configuration, and one character is a fighter/thief. Looking at her description she should be able to deal with these things. I must be missing something. Help?
Select the thief, click the eye mask, then click the box or door. Should then say unlocked then click and loot.
Okay one more because I'm sucking early. Do my players heal slowly over time or when they rest? Or does it take potions and spells to heal them?
Here's a question - does anyone know any secret loot that can be grabbed early on in the game? I'm just about to hit the Vale of Shadows and was wondering if there are any goodies I can get easily (I remember that in BG1/2 there are lots of special items hidden around the world). Oh and this game is fab!
No healing over time (to my knowledge) in your gameplay options select 'rest until healed' then when you do rest, you'll come back with full health and spells. Also linked to resting, quick save before you do rest - in case your ambushed and get wiped out as a result. If suggest saving your potions for use in battle (they're quicker than spells).
