Please, I know it's tempting, but don't feed the troll! I just noticed a nice review on appspy. They have a video review too
It is amazing how a dev manages to put a rather unique and interesting piece into a game (saving replays) and the same minute someone complains o.o
This +1,000,000! Before I started testing Icarus-X, I had only been able to find *one* vertical shmup for the iPhone that I felt was worth keeping and enjoying, and that was after searching the alphabetical game listings in iTunes one category at a time, one entry at a time, looking for anything and *everything* that might possibly interest me. I obviously wasn't sure what to expect from Icarus-X, but the first time I fired it up, it blew my mind; it was already so smooth and so beautiful that it pretty much took my breath away. Thank you Quadsphere -- for sharing your passion for great shoot 'em ups with us, and for delivering a first-rate, must-have title to iDevice shooter fans around the world. You're a fantastic developer, and we need as many like you as we can get, producing awesome games for those of us who keep turning the App Store(s) upside down looking for them. Kyle
Buster Red, plus now I've added Sketch Nation Shooter, A Crazy Fighter (that one's App Store listing is MIA at the moment), and Espgaluda II, so now with Icarus-X, I'm all the way up to five.
Might have to go pick up Buster Red later, then! I didn't really like Sketch Nation: Shooter, though. All the games ended up being more or less the same, and it just "felt" wrong, you know? Oh, and I really recommend looking into Tyrian.
If you like this one, check out Espgaluda II... It's kickass bullet hell and props to the developer of Icarus-X! I'm seriously impressed and I'm actually finding this one even harder than Espgaluda II, but in a frutratingly good way... Maybe it's the eyecandy graphics or the dodging of walls that has me blowing up my poor little ship. Anyways, love it - love it - love it! Oh, and everytime someone says something nice, a troll dies - lets keep a moment of silence and move on best regards Johannes
Buster Red is a very decent game with lovely hand-drawn graphics. I also like Roswell Fighter and Skysmash 1918. But Espgaluda II and Icarus-X are at the top of the heap, as far as I'm concerned.
I have to say, i have nearly 3 pages of shmups on my iPod. I loved all those you mentioned, I would add Space Invaders Infinity Gene and Noiz2sa to the list. But be aware they both have a very peculiar "minimal" graphics style... that won't be for everyone. They both have lite versions Oh and also Space Deadbeef which is free and awesome, although a bit repetitive, but has very nice ideas.
Infinity Gene is really, really great. I also like Noiz2sa, but I've heard that the free version is actually better than the paid one so I haven't dropped any money on it. Oh, and Noiz2sa, for being a bullet hell, was actually pretty easy. I managed to beat the last stage with pretty much zero trouble on my first try. Also, has anyone made it to hard mode yet? I haven't checked the leaderboards in the last day or so...
Well, no one yet .... I hope the update gets approved quickly. Guise, i've watched your 9Mil run replay, i love how you beat the 3rd boss, i didn't expect that at all
I got till lvl 5 boss, but god, it is hard @.@ It needs a multitasking genius to beat it . Really really fun
Just bought noiz2sa and got the free version as well - and you're right! Surprisingly enough the .99 app runs very choppy and feels very unfinished, whereas the free version feels much more fluid... Though it has some enemy spawn issues. Thry keep spawning right in your sights thus making it less pertinent to move about and dodge bullets. But weird with the paid app being, well, laggy... Nice style though, indeed abstract and reminiscent of the brilliant Infinity Gene
Haha, brilliant! The secret's out now, huh? This game is wild. Bought it shortly after it came out but haven't gotten around to playing it until today. Mighty fun shmup. One of my ways of dealing with the level 3 boss' second phase is to think of the two bullet streams as a slalom. If you observe, the boss always tries to face your ship while doing is side-to-side wiggle, so get below it, between the streams, and almost nose to nose with it and the side to side movement will be a lot smaller, plus you'll be within double-damage range. Kerpow! If my (I'm assuming short-lived) 7 million replay is on the boards you'll be able to see what I'm talking about. Wicked fun game. Love the techno soundtrack. For kicks, I had my iPhone plugged into my PC's speaker set for a few rounds of the game, pretty cool!
Hmmm, this one snuck up on me. I'll have to make my visits to the TA forums a little more frequent. It does look pretty good, but I think that I'll sleep on it tonight, and decide tomorrow.
