It seems like I read here (or maybe somewhere else) that Apple does not allow developers to mention iCade support in their app's description. Is that true? If so, why?
I believe that that used to be the case (it might still be), but I'm pretty sure that they don't care as much as before. I'm not exaclty sure why though. They allow Blutooth Controller, Blutooth Arcade (Cabinet), Blutooth Joystick, Joystick Support, ION Arcade Compatible, ect. So I think that they just don't want the specific iCade name for some reason
The seem to allow mention of iCade--it's mentioned frequently these days and even shown in some screenshots. (Other apps just mention Bluetooth joystick/controller, but that's not necessarily Apple's doing: they may just be copying what others have done, or else trying to include all the non-iCade controllers out there.) Mentioning iCade used to not be allowed, so I've heard, but I think that was over a year ago. I'm not certain, but I think it was about not promoting ANY specific controller. Maybe because at one point Apple wanted to foster native gaming, make developers do the work to get touch and tilt control right, and avoid the pitfall that peoples' habits would make a controller necessary too much of the time--which would fragment the app market. That might have genuinely been a risk in the early days when people thought games = gamepad and you can't game on a touchscreen. But these days, native (touch/tilt) gaming is well established, so I don't think they need to care about that now. (See also: Gameloft's Duo Gamer, mentioned clearly in app descriptions.) The "i" thing is an interesting theory though--I hadn't thought of that! And to think it all started as an April Fool joke. (But if Apple really thought the name violated Apple branding, they'd probably demand iCade change the name, not just remove one place where the name might be seen. Besides, there have always been iAccessories with iNames from third parties. Like Griffin's iTrip line. Even games/apps... remember iDracula? Ha.)
Can anyone confirm whether iCade still works in the current PAC-MAN for iPad version, 3.5.0? (The iOS 6 update.) One reviewer says it doesn't.
I'm not sure if Super Crate Box is working I just got my iCade and have only tried about 8 games. So I may have done something wrong. --------////////--------- The iCade core is really nice for the money. I think the stock joystick is on par with a stock Mad Catz joystick. However, the buttons are a little stiff and clunky. I'm planning on swapping a few buttons out with Sanwa buttons, and adding a cheap power switch. Overall first impressions are good. 30mm buttons would greatly improve the iCade Core. The way Mad Catz is "plug and play" helps people modify/customize their set up easily (without dremels, soldering irons etc.) It's very fun to play on the iCade. I also ordered a HDMI adapter, and I can't wait to try the iCade on TV. Here is a (bad) pic of the core next to my USB arcade stick.
Yeah, I agree, the icade core is remarkable for it's quality parts and design. The buttons are a little stiff, but I am wondering in time if they will loosen up naturally, so I don't mind too much. But yeah, games without autofire can get your fingers worked up, though, it is easy to use different fingers with all the buttons cause the buttons are so big. I played super crate box the other day with no problem so it should work. Some programs you have to exit out of and come back into for icade to work, some have funny options settings you have to set. But scb should work fine, if you are still having problems with it, let me know, I will try it out closer later tonight. Hdmi is awesome! I was a hdmi convert before becoming an icade convert, but nowdays, I love both. Metal slug x, tabletop racing or blazing star are so fun playing on hdmi and icade core. Love it! The other brothers is coming out with icade support this week and I got the dev to hide the onscreen buttons for us! I'm currently working with other devs to see if we can get icade support, seems like we are getting pretty close with Plasma Sky. Be sure to check out the sister thread hdmi thread if you got the urge, there is alot of stuff about icade and wireless joysticks in there too. http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=173262

I found a guy selling 6 Sanwa buttons for 14 dollars on ebay and couldn't resist. I really don't see a reason the replace the stock joystick. So the buttons and on/off switch set me back less than 15 dollars. The iCade Core was around 30 dollars. With as much time as I'm going to spend playing this, I think it's a bargain. (Especially considering a standard PS3 controller is 60 bucks). Ok thanks I'll give it another try. (I've made an extra back up of that plus the old Fix-It Felix, which lost iCade support some time ago.) By the way, I see the file name says 3.3 1 (not point-one, space-one). I've recently got the new Nyko PlayPad Pro (Amazon link) which I got for $30. Nyko markets it as an Android controller, but it has an iCade mode which they don't advertise at all. I bought this at a risk fearing that the mapping would be terrible (ahem, iCade 8-bitty), but to my surprise, this works BETTER than any iCade controller out there! And this is coming from a person who owns the original iCade Cabinet, and tried out the 8-bitty from a friend. No one reviewed this controller for iOS devices, so here's my take on it. The controller: The Nyko PlayPad Pro feels like any generic Xbox 360 controller. It has the usual A B Y X and trigger layout, and the upper analog stick that Xbox controllers are known for. It's made out of matte plastic, which looks and feels alright, but gets smudges from fingerprints a lot, but luckily they're easy to clean out. Overall hardware, this is pretty normal. The PlayPad switcher: One of the main features of the PlayPad Pro is the switcher at the back that lets the controller be used in a number of situations. There is the normal controller mode (HID Mode), which lets you use it on your PC or Mac as a game controller. Next is the iCade Mode, which is designed for all iCade games for iOS. Then there is Mouse Mode, which lets the PlayPad act as a mouse if you're trying to run a game that requires a mouse. And finally, there is the App Mode, for Nyko's Playground app on Android for mapping the controls (similar to Blutrol on Cydia if you jailbreak). iCade Mode: This is the reason I got it. I don't own any Android devices, and I don't jailbreak my iDevices (I'm clean that way ), so I got it for all the games I play that support iCade. I do own the original cabinet iCade, but it's too big and too heavy to transport it around, so I needed something more mobile. iCade Core is too similar to the cabinate, the 8-bitty has horrible mapping, and the iCade Mobile is for iPhone only. So I decided to take the risk and get the PlayPad without knowing how they mapped the buttons for it to work with iCade. Thankfully, Nyko did their job, and the layout is excellent! In terms of movement, you can use BOTH the 4-way D-Pad and the upper analog stick. Games work like magic with the analog stick. The iCade Cabinet and the iCade Core can't match the fluidity with this controller in terms of movement. And as for the rest of the controllers, almost all games use the A B Y X buttons like any Xbox game, but I did encounter one or two games that use the triggers. But overall, this is a much better experience in my opinion than any iCade controller. And the best thing is that you can connect your iPad or iPhone to the TV, and lay back with your controller and play like any console experience, and it really pulls it off well. I paid $100 for the iCade Cabinet when it was brand new, and really had some good time with it. But now, I feel like I'm either going to sell it or keep it as a nostalgic item, because I'm almost certainly never going back to that controller after playing with the PlayPad Pro. And maybe someday if I get an Android device or jailbreak my iPad to use Blutrol, the experience will be even better. At $30, this is a steal. Great layout, lots of modes to switch in, and fantastic controls for iCade-supported games. And battery life seems pretty good for now. I wrote this review because no one reviewed this for iOS devices, so I feel like I need to tell you that this is a fantastic controller, and in my opinion better than any iCade controller. Highly recommended! If anyone has any further questions, please let me know. Edit: Here's how the key mapping is on the PlayPad Pro when it's on iCade Mode. It might look a bit messy, but I promise you it works great and most games just use the A B Y X buttons.
