    They made a Pokemon clone.

That's right. Get a load of this:

Wow. Even for Gameloft, that's pretty low. The real surprise is, how come this isn't on iOS yet...? Why release it on the DS, where NO ONE would need it...?

Anyway, I don't like the overworld character sprites. Meh. Otherwise I like.

I would actually want this on my iPod seeing how we will never have a true version of Pokemon. I'll ask my rep from Gameloft and see if I can get any news out of them!

Seriously? You try coming up with an entirely unique game idea that would have mass market appeal and then developing a top notch game from it.

What kind of stupid ad hominem fallacy is this? That's like justifying stealing a car because working to afford one is too hard and complicated.

Making ganes is hard and expensive, boohoo, cry me a river. If that's the case, maybe they shouldnt be, you know, in the gaming business. You can't be an expressive company in the business and give me this backyard outfit excuse.

No it's not. It's like a car company saying "the camry isn't even available in the US, so we should make a car with similar features and price point so everyone can get a camry-like car."

Also, in this hypothetical world, nearly every single model of car has either been invented or wouldn't sell.

And making the actual game, which Gameloft does with high quality, takes more time than a storyline or idea. You're acting like concept and story is the only part of the game that matters.

Nope. Im acting like the only way this would be more shameless is if the game was called "Catchermon" or something like that. Seriously, how can you defend what amounts to wholesale intellectual theft...?

Im usually the guy on your side of the argument. But this is just too much. It goes to show that whatever Gameloft hasn't cloned yet, it's probably just a matter of time.

When people raged about NOVA being a Halo clone, I didn't even see that many similarities to warrant a reaction (the space marine "genre" isn't exactly a propriety of Bungie/Microsoft). Same for Gangstar -- companies have been making GTA lookalikes for the better part of a decade now I believe, we can't exactly single Gameloft out.

But THIS though? Pokemon isn't a theme or a genre. It's a unique game concept, and they straight up mirrored the game. Like I said, I can let it slide when they delve into an established game style (FPS, RTS, sandbox, whatever), but Pokemon is too much of its own thing.

Yeah, technically it's an RPG. But it's so distinct from things like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy that it is almost its own genre. You get what im saying.

And I don't think making a car similar to that of the competition is a proper comparison.

Are you really defending gameloft here? This is a blatant ripoff of pokemon. Gameloft has the resources to create an original game, they just choose to copy others. It's just out of sheer laziness they don't create something original.

I can live with Gameloft making FPS type games and RPGs that are similar to other games, but pokemon is just too unique to be copied.

They put a lot of work into their games, but unfortunately too much of the effort is put into copying the work of others.

I think cynical is more appropriate than lazy.

EDIT: note that both terms are negative, I'm not defending Gameloft one bit.

I guess I agree with you. This is too much, especially the combat. But Gameloft occasionally innovates, like how you can create your own Pokemon.

That actually looks really good. Yes it's a pokemon clone, but if it's ported, could it be the first full-fledged console-quality RPG? Yes I think it might be. It will be the first RPG to break away from the repetitive "kill monsters, fetch for those lazy ass NPCs, kill monsters for those stupid NPCs" cycle that every single adventure RPG in the appstore seems to follow and can't get enough of.

Well, how much better can we get than this? Pokemon's never coming to the iDevices.

I don't like it much either, but I say, "WHAT THE HECK, DEAL WITH IT." Raging won't ban it from systems/consoles or make Gameloft change their mind and make it unavailable.

Edit: I'm not defending Gameloft either, I'm just trying to stop your raging.

Maybe, but this is for the DS. If it was for iOS, sure it would be fine. It'd still be an outrageous knockoff, but fine. However, the DS already has a bunch of Pokemon games. I'd buy it for my iPod, but never for the DSi.

    Gameloft replied,

Lots of people have been asking for this game. My request was forwarded to the team in charge of development and they are currently considering a iOS port (hopefully with some improvements)

They have a bajillion dollars. Other developers don't.

Clearly their strategy works and at least someone enjoys it. So 'cry me a river' and stop bashing other people's work.
