But it also means half the population have difficulty spelling, being especially a burden on those with dyslexia and foreign students trying to learn English. I don't personally believe the fringe benefits outweigh the massive disadvantages. But each to his own, I suppose. Nearly 80% of those polled in the UK show they're in favor of spelling reform, so maybe we'll see it someday.
What can I say, there are a lot of idiots in the UK. I didn't go to a particularly good school and I don't often have a problem with it. Dyslexics and foreigners probably have a point though.
You're not an idiot if you don't know how to spell every word under the sun. Some of the smartest scientists and successful business people are terrible spellers. The founders of Google are self-admitted horrendous spellers — when they originally went to register the web address for their search engine, they were intending to name it after the famously large number, a 'googol', but misspelled it as 'google'. But what can you do with idiots like that, eh?
