Donkey Kong Country is my favorite game on the SNES, Donkey Kong Land is my favorite Game Boy Pocket game, Donkey Kong Country Returns is my favorite exclusive on the Wii (Okami's my favorite game overall), Donkey Kong NES is my favorite virtual console game, Donkey Kong Jr. was my favorite Game & Watch Gallery 4 game, and I really enjoyed what I played of Donkey Kong Country 2 (but I've hit a stopping point in it because I have no idea how to get "better" to pass the level... pretty brutal game right thar). But, for the life of me, I can't figure out why I never played Donkey Kong Country 3 until just a few hours ago. I could have sworn I played it back when it came out, but I think I'm thinking of Donkey Kong Country 2, because none of this seems familiar. Now I haven't played a ton of the game so far, only about 45 minutes in, but so far I am loving it. The first world is full of levels that feels so different from what I'm used to, the music is way better than I thought it would be (DKC had some amazing music, but this one just might best it in that department), and the overall game so far has just been loads of fun. Why did it take me so long to play this one? D: I feel like such a bad Donkey Kong fan lol. This one flew under my radar even more silently than I thought, and not for good reason. There are no good reasons why I didn't play this game before. It baffles me how I went so long being a Donkey Kong fan and never actually played this one. I thought it might have originally been because I did play it before but it didn't interest me and it didn't attain the masterful heights of its predecessors, but after playing it for real I can see that's not even close to the truth. If this pacing in the game holds up, it could very well top Donkey Kong Country as my favorite Super Nintendo game... and that would be one heck of an accomplishment. Anyone else have a similar epiphany with Donkey Kong Country 3?
I played it in it's prime, while people thought it wasn't the best I really enjoyed it. HOWEVER. I never did beat the entire game admittedly. i used to rent my SNES games (too poor to afford them) and would beat them before I had to return them. DKC3 was a really challenging game once you got to the area with the big cauldron and the metal area (If I remember correctly). I liked that it was more open world to travel as well, being able to find secret areas in the right parts of the world. Good game mate, better late than never!
I'd call DKC 2 and 3 great games, but none of them could ever taken DKC's place. It's probably partly for nostalgic reasons, but even setting those aside it's still such a fantastic game it's hard to argue against my reasoning.
I remember having to rent a lot of SNES games, too. Good times.... good times. DKC3 has already been getting pretty challenging. I just passed the boss in World 2 and there were a couple rather tricky stages in that world. Although I have no idea how to progress further now that I beat that boss. I've been boating around but can't find how to get into the next world I'm digging the world map for sure. I didn't know of the secret areas, though I think one thing I'm really really digging is the elephant. I love the elephant Whether it is or isn't for nostalgic reasons will be up in the air for some of us lol, but yes, the ingenuity of the first game and how it was so different from other platformers, pushed the genre forward, pushed the SNES to the limits in terms of beautifully-animated graphics... its mark on games in general is unmistakable. And honestly, it's just a damn great game. I don't know. I might have been talking a little crazy when I said that DKC3 has the potential to kick the first game down from its throne finally. Might have been talking in the heat of the moment a tad bit
